Setting up your Computer to use

ECU CONTROL USB DRIVER INSTALLATION This is a step by step process that shows you many pictures how to setup your computer to connect to the ecu so you can run ecucontrol. If you follow the pictures in this write up you should have no problems getting the drivers installed. If you decide to do this on your own without reading this, you will be spending many hours like I did looking for the right drivers and not getting anywhere. 1. With the new ECU NOT installed in the car yet, plug the USB cable into an available USB slot on your computer. The “Found New Hardware” window should open up. 2. Click on “yes this time only” and hit “next”

3. Select “Install from a list or specific location”

4. If “search removable media” is selected, UNSELECT it. Now check off “include this location in the search” and push the “BROWSE” button

You will get a new window that opens. Make sure you have your “INSTALL CD” in your CD-ROM drive. Click on the drive name, and then click on “DRIVER”, then “INF”, then “WIN2000&xp”. Then press “OK”. (Note that your pathname will not be as deep as it shows in this picture. I have the disk information on my C: Drive. Yours will be in your CD-ROM drive.)

5.

6. You will not come back to this screen, and the path that the driver is in should be shown in the window

7. Click the “NEXT” button. You will see this screen come up. This screen will search for much longer than you would expect it to take. Please be patient. The drivers are in the folder, windows just wants to take a long time on this part.

8. This part of the driver is now installed. You will see this screen come up. Press “FINISH”.

9. A couple seconds later you will get a NEW “found new hardware” windows pop up. This is going to install the second part of the drivers for this cable to work. Select the “install from a specific location” button again and press “NEXT”

10. You will notice that the path to the drivers should still be the same as we entered before. All we need to do is press next and let it find them. (note: If for some reason it has “search removable media” checked off please UNCHECK it before pressing the next button)

11. It will only look for this driver for a second or less

12. The “completed installing hardware” window will open. Press “FINISH” to end the install

13. Now that the drivers have been installed we need to double check what the “COM PORT” number is that the computer assigned to the USB drivers. To do this, first click on the “START” button on the lower left hand side of your computer screen. Then select “CONTROL PANEL” from options on the right hand side. You will see a screen like the one below. Select “Performance & Maintenance” at the bottom

14. Next select “SYSTEM” from the bottom right hand side

15. You will be brought to the “GENERAL” tab by default. We want to select the “HARDWARE” tab.

16. Select the “DEVICE MANAGER” option on this screen

17. You should notice that you have 1 new hardware device showing up in your manager. We want to click on the “+” (plus) sign on the one called “PORTS”

18. You should now notice you have a new port labeled “NOK SERIES USB CABLE (COM3)” Note that the “COM” number may be different on your computer. That is OK. Make a mental note of what that COM NUMBER is. If you have a hard time remembering stuff then you can always check back here again, or write it down. We will need this number later.

YOU ARE DONE INSTALLING THE DRIVERS FOR THE USB CABLE.

5. The next screen is just letting you know that it will install to the program groups on your computer. This way you can delete it later by going to the “ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE” tab in your control panel. Click on “CONTINUE” to proceed.

6. The program will now install. You get to see the install progress bar on the screen. The program will install pretty quickly so you will only see it for a brief moment.

7. The program is now installed successfully. Press “OK” to finish the setup.

Setting up your Computer to use

ECU CONTROL PROGRAM SETUP This is a step by step process that shows you with a few pictures how to setup ecucontrol the first time so you can use it with your ECU. It is very simple to do, but there are a few key points that you may miss without this guide. 1. First we need to open the program. Do so by clicking the “START” button on your bottom left hand screen. Then select “ALL PROGRAMS”, “ECU CONTROL”, and then click on “EcuControl5”.

2. Click on the “SETTINGS” tab and go to the bottom one that says “ALL SETTINGS” and click on it.

3. The only thing we are really worried about here is that the COM PORT number matches the one that our computer assigned to the new USB driver. Click on the

drop down box and select your COM port number. Then press OK at the bottom.

These next steps ONLY need to be done once the ECU is in the car and the car is running. You will need to do this EVERY TIME you connect the laptop to the car and want to data log. 4. With ECU CONTROL open you need to select the “ROM” we are using. This is simply the Base Program that our “chip” is based off. Since ours is based off the ECU CONTROL variant of NG60 (the upgrade to NG55) we will select “OBD0

PGMFI NG55 ROM” from the drop down menu.

5. Next click on “Connect” in the middle right hand side

6. You will notice the bottom of the screen will change to “connected”, and will show the COM port number we connected on. The number beside it is the speed of the connection. It can be adjusted in the settings tab where we set the com port number.

7. After we have successfully connected to the ECU we need to start data logging. Just press the “start data logging” button on the middle right hand side. You should notice all kinds of numbers start moving around on the screen. You can

change the screens by pressing on the different tabs across the top.

That’s it. You are now connected and data logging. You can go to ECUCONTROL.COM to find out some more info on what the program is. This document is the intellectual property of Stinky from PGMFI.ORG.
