September 21, 2009 The Republican National Hispanic Assembly Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month
LAKELAND, Florida – The Republican National Hispanic Assembly (RNHA) celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week by then President Lyndon Johnson and was later officially proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period beginning on September 15th and ends on October 15th. Every U.S. President thereafter has signed the official proclamation to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the richness of the United States of America. The US Census Bureau in 2008 reports there were approximately 44 million people of Hispanic origin in the United States and that this ethnic group has the fastest-growing population in the country. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, the electorate in last year’s presidential election was the most racially and ethnically diverse in U.S. history. National Chairman Maldonado said, “From the Spaniards’ 1565 founding of St. Augustine, Florida, America’s oldest city to Hispanic American astronaut shuttle flights to outer space, Hispanic Americans have contributed greatly to our country’s history, culture, scientific and social accomplishments. With the rich culture of Hispanic people, we enjoy sharing our heritage with the United States. This is what our great nation is about, different cultures being shared and hopefully garnering a better understanding and appreciation of these cultures.” ###
The mission of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly is to build a membership organization to foster the principles of the Republican Party in the Hispanic community, provide Hispanic Americans with a forum to play an influential role in local, state, and national Party activities, increase the number of Hispanic Republican elected officials, and create and maintain a network of Hispanic Republican leaders.
