5 INSTALLATION CONDITIONS The machine is intended for indoor use only. Site requirements: 1) The machine should be installed near a main electrical outlet which should remain accessible after the installation. This main electrical outlet must be earth grounded to ensure proper operation and personal safety to conform with current standards. Ensure sufficient surrounding space to allow the front door to be opened. If the main electrical outlet socket cannot be accessed, include an isolating switch that can be accessed quickly and easily. The isolating switch should be: - 208V / 15A. - 230V / 16A. This minilab has been designed for connection to a network with earthed neutral. CE only : Provide a 30 mA residual current protection upstream of the main electrical outlet socket to which the minilab will be connected. 2) The machine should be placed on a dry, hard, stable, flat floor. Water must not run or stagnate under the minilab during cleaning of the premises. Avoid excessively humid areas. 3) The machine is not fixed to the floor. It should only be moved on an exceptional basis and only after being placed on its pallet, particularly if obstacles, such as pavements or steps, are to be overcome. 4) The ambient temperature in the premises should be between +15 °C and +28 °C even when the machine is switched off. Relative humidity should be between 10 and 85 % (without condensation). Do not put the machine in areas exposed to direct sunlight (in front of a window) or near heaters. Never place the machine near steam or oily vapours. The premises should be properly ventilated (motorized ventilation system - minimim flow = 10 air changes/hour) and the atmosphere cleaned with air filtration. 5) The machine should not hinder traffic routes or public exits. Avoid areas close to stairs, escalators or lifts. The area required for machine operation is its floor surface area plus the area required for access to the external doors and to the machine itself. 6) The machine operation requires the use of a sink for rack rinsing. A sink of approximately 60 cm x 40 cm, 30 cm deep is sufficient. For chemical preparation, the water should be of sufficient quality (< 20° TH) and at a temperature between 20°C and 35°C. If the water is too hard, the quality of the chemical processing may be affected, in which case a water softener should be used.
6 COMPUTER BATTERIES Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Dispose of used batteries according to national, regional or local regulations. If you replace the battery inside the computer incorrectly it will cause an explosion. Always use the same or an equivalent type of battery. Do not expose batteries to excessive heat or fire.

Possible chemical contamination The developer is extremely sensitive to contamination by the bleach/fixer. Just a few drops of bleach/fixer are sufficient to render the developer useless. One of the baths may be contaminated by a handling error. In this case, careful rinsing of the tanks and racks is necessary before re-filling with chemicals. Turn the main power switch (Green) to OFF. Disconnect the main power cable. Open the front right door: empty the tanks via the tank drain taps, take the racks out of the machine and rinse them carefully, take the tank filters out, carefully rinse the tanks with water, completely fill the tanks with water (without the racks), connect the main power cable, switch the machine on , put the machine into operation and allow the circulation pumps to operate for 5 minutes, switch the machine off, disconnect the main power cable, empty the tank, put new filters into place, prepare the chemical processor, carefully following the instructions provided in the manuals delivered with the chemical kits, fill the tanks in the following order: stabilizer, bleach/fixer then developer, put the racks back in place, put the tank top cover and overall top cover back in place. Connect the main power cable and move the main power switch (Green) to "ON" . Close the front cover.
4 CONNECTING THE MACHINE check that the main power switch (Green) on the right side is "OFF", connect the main power cable to the wall outlet. Never switch the main power switch to "ON" if the tank is empty. The main socket should be accessible at all times. For safety purposes, the main power cable should not be screwed to the main terminal block. Always use the grounded main socket as defined in the installation chapter.

Control strip (paper / film). The control strip is a process allowing you to assess the chemistry's state and trend. It helps you too to diagnose a possible chemical unbalance. Principle: A preexposed paper (or film), the control strip, is developed in the process to be assessed. It is then measured and its values are compared with the ones of the reference strip provided by the supplier. To perform this operation, "Stop/Go" must be red. Click "Control Strip" on the home page. The "Control strip management" screen displays.
Allows to develop a paper sensitogram. Allows to measure a paper sensitogram with a densitometer. Allows to measure a film sensitogram.
Developing a paper strip Initial condition: the machine is loaded with a standard magazine. Click on "Develop a paper strip" and then on "Start" on the displayed screen.
Follow the displayed procedure step by step. The first step consists in removing the standard magazine.

Measuring a paper strip Once the densitometer has been calibrated, you can now measure the paper strip and compare it to the manufacturer's reference strip. Enter the code number of the reference strip. If this reference strip is not the last one used, then click on 'New code' and enter the values (correction factors) of the reference strip's chart (click then on 'OK' and proceed to the reference strip measure: see third picture below). Some Kodak fast process chemistry types may require level 2 correction factors. For further information, refer to the Current Information Summaries (CIS) corresponding to your chemistry, available on Kodak's web site.
Click with the densitometer on the colour pointed out by the red target. Click then on 'Next' to select the next colour to be measured. Using the manual mode allows you to go back if you think a measure is wrong. Click on 'OK at the end of the process.

3.3 Input selection
Scanner on/off. red : on grey : off
Film input black : scanner available red : scanner selected greyed : scanner not available
If the input selected is the scanner, remember to select the required resolution too. If the scan result is intended for display on a PC, or for paper printing format < 15x21, high resolution is sufficient. For higher format you need to use ultra resolution. However, with an APS negative for a paper print, we recommend using ultra resolution. All print orders on the machine are automatically stored on the hard disk as temporary archive. The storing capacity varies according to the format of the image used (up to 25 000 pictures for scanned images in ultra resolution and up to 50 000 pictures in high resolution). All orders can be re-called, modified or stored on a external support without needing to repeat source acquisition. Refer to next page For selecting input from a digital source, such as memory card, cd-rom.

The intelligence of the image analysis Eye-tech Digital ScienceTM integrates automatic analysis algorhythms for analogue and digital photos : LDC (Local Density Control) is the fruit of the research and experience of Imaging Solution AG (ex Gretag), optimised for the correction of traditional films. 3 possible settings : - low - middle - high AE for the optimisation of pro films
Digital source recommendation:
User manual - DKS SOFTWARE OPERATION
For Minilab users: The card must be inserted firmly and quickly into the card reader. Otherwise, the card may be misread. For Digital Card users: It is essential to avoid taking photographs when the battery is nearly used up. If the critical battery threshold is crossed while the image is being recorded on the card, there is a risk of losing all the recorded images and the card may get stuck. At best, this will mean reformatting the card (which obviously means losing all the images it contains) and, at worst, the card may be completely unusable. Cards may suffer from "wear", making them unusable in digital cameras.

(1) : The size depends on the image ratio. In this example, the ratio (length over width) is worth 1.5 and an image102mm x 152mm at 300 dpi. (2) : The size of the image is important. This format is recommended to keep the best possible image quality (resolution in pixels, very small distortion level, accuracy of color space). The quality is close to the TIFF format quality and yet remains smaller in terms of memory size. (3) : The size of the original image is preserved. (4) : Only for JPEG format. (5) : In BMP format, the profile is not embedded in the image. User manual - DKS SOFTWARE OPERATION
(6) The Minilab's SDP color space makes it possible to use all the colorimetric capacities of the Minilab. Mostly recommended for photo correction. The sRGB color space is more consumer oriented. It is recommended in applications using excusively sRGB color spaces (e.g.: home DVD reader).
Warning ! The "Preferred Color Rendering" function is accessible for all the images defined in the sRGB space. If previously applied, do not apply again (e.g.: image initially burnt on the Minilab).

This correction is particularly effecient on under-exposed images (when the subject is outsidethe range of the flash, for example). It also enables a subject to 'come out of the shadows' when there is not enough light (when a group sit around a table and the furthest away disappear into the shadows) It also gives great results on contrasted images (reduced visibility of aerial photos, photos taken through a dirty window, etc.)

6- Color management of digital images 6.1 Managing ICC profiles 6.1.1 What are ICC profiles How can the Minilab guarantee that the colorimetric rendering of the printed images is the one you expect ? In terms of color management, the rendering of an image may change when displayed on different monitors using different technologies, or printed on different printers. All these discrepancies come from the fact that the physical characteristics of the printout peripheral's elementary components (i.e. the monitor's red, green and blue photophores, the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black pigments of the paper, etc.) are of a spectral nature, and therefore may be very different as shown below :

6.1.2 ICC color management brings color consistency
The ICC standard (International Color Consortium, www.color.org) has recently been introduced to guarantee color consistency between different display units and color acquisition systems.
User manual - ICC Profiles
An ICC profile is a small file (a few Ko up to 2 Mo), which characterises very accurately the colorimetric rendering of an image or a peripheral. It can be referred to as the "dictionary" of an image. Hence, to interpret an image, it is necessary to extract this specific "dictionary" (i.e. its ICC profile).

How can an image be scanned and displayed on a monitor with identical colors, when the language of the scanner (i.e. scanner's ICC profile) is different from the language of the monitor (i.e. monitor's ICC profile) ? A universal "buffer" language is used to perform the color conversion. The ICC organization defined the LAB or XYZ dictionary as being this universal language (just as Esperanto). A single peripheral ICC profile is useless. Always combine an input peripheral ICC profile with an output peripheral ICC profile, in order to translate the input peripheral language into the output peripheral language.

The diagram above shows the color consistency between image A and image B when color management is applied.
* We advise you to use the ICC profile of your minilab (SDP.icc) as your work profile on your personal computer (see diagram next page). This profile SDP.icc is available on your Minilab desktop. Copy the profile from the "ICC profile of your Minilab" directory to your personal computer. (On Windows, this profile is to be copied from the following directory: C:\Windows\system32\Spool\drivers\color).

Warning ! It is highly recommended to embed your ICC profile in your image, in order to ensure colorimetric rendering consistency for all the future representations of this image. If there is no ICC profile embedded, the colorimetric rendering of the image will be chosen arbitrarily, and thus in various ways. In such a case, you will have to associate an ICC profile to this image each time it is processed.

Each time a digital image is processed, it is translated from its color space, defined by the embedded profile (or a default profile), to the color space defined by the Minilab profile SDP.icc. All user corrections are performed within the Minilab color workspace. When the image is sent to a digital output, it is either kept within the minilab colour space (tiff and jpeg format), or converted to the sRGB space (exif and PCD). (1) This color management is performed by the image chain of the customer application (2) This color management is performed by the image chain of the Minilab. 78

6.1.4 Why does the image printed on your Minilab not correspond to your customer's expectations ? . This situation may occur if one of the peripheral profiles has not been defined precisely enough. This happens more often than not ! For example, changing the screen setting (contrast, brightness, color balance...) can modify the image display and lead to an inaccurateness of the screen ICC profile initially defined. Many cameras associate an sRGB profile to their images. However, this sRGB profile doesn't always reflect the exact colorimetric rendering of the device. Try taking a picture of a scenery using different brands and types cameras, and you will be surprised by the variety of color rendering. There are many tools available on the market to help you define the profile for each of your peripherals more effectively. Diversity of Color Gamuts : The Gamut of a peripheral is the entire range of colors that the peripheral can manage (i.e. monitor, printer, projector...) or perceive (scanner, camera...). The volume and the shape of the GAMUT only depend on the printing or acquisition system's physics. i.e. The more the inks or pigments of the printing system are saturated, the greater the Gamut. Let's consider an acquisition peripheral 1 and a printing peripheral 2 : A- Reliable reproduction of colors The Gamut of both peripherals represented by Intersection A, is the group of colors that the acquisition peripheral can see and that the printing system can reliably reproduce. B- Imperfect reproduction of colors = Gamut of printing peripheral 2 is too small Group B is the group of colors that the acquisition peripheral can see, but that the printing system is unable to reproduce accurately. Thus the result is imperfect. C- Imperfect reproduction of colors = Gamut of acquisition peripheral 1 is too small Group C is the group of colors that the acquisition peripheral is unable to see accurately, but that the printing system can reproduce accurately.

To illustrate these issues, lets consider the four examples below showing the Minilab Gamut (Kodak Royal paper) and the sRGB Gamut at different luminosity levels. The Minilab Gamut can be greater or smaller depending on the luminosity level, the color and the saturation.

A color patch shows if the image contains an embedded profile or if the user has decided to associate a profile to the image (see explanation below).
User Manual - DKS Generation 3 - ICC Profiles
Cases of application: When the image has an embedded profile: a) If the"Image Profile" button is active (green): The rendering used will be the one required by the manufacturer of the camera (or of the peripheral used to acquire the photo, i.e. a scanner). b) If the "Color rendering" button (Adobe 98 or other) is active (green): Warning ! It is not advised to associate a profile other than that specific to the image. When there is no embedded profile: a) If the "Color rendering" button (Adobe 98 or other) is not active (grey): Providing there is no profile associated to the image, we associate the Minilab profile (SDP.icc) by default. Thus, the rendering will be the same as in software versions prior to Version 4. b) If the "Color rendering" button (Adobe 98 or other) is active (green): If the profile of the peripheral used to generate the image is known, then you can associate this profile to your image.
Note : To obtain the same color rendering as a printing system that does not disturb ICC profiles, you have to associate the printer profile to your image.
6.2 Adapting digital image rendering to the country preferences
Each culture has specific preferences in terms of color perception.

Similarily, it is recommended to get used to the "Image profile" rendering gradually before applying it by default to the entire production, as the Minilab color rendering may be substantially different as regards certain colors, compared to the standard color rendering of digital cameras. This difference may be somewhat disturbing at first.

5.2 Installation Site The following precautions are to be taken on installing the scanner: Install the scanner on a flat, level and stable surface. Install the scanner in an environment with the following temperature and humidity conditions: Temperature : 10°C to 30°C Humidity : 10 to 85% RH Correct operation is guaranteed under appropriate humidity conditions (approximately 50 to 65% RH). If the humidity level is too low, dust may easily stick to the film due to static electricity. If the humidity level is too high, the films risk being deformed (warping or curling). Do not install the scanner in an area subject to direct sunlight or high temperatures which could result in the build-up of heat inside the scanner, causing it to break down. Do not install the scanner in an area subject to sudden changes in temperature or humidity. Condensation which may form inside the scanner could lead to deterioration in the quality of the picture. Do not install the scanner near devices that generate a magnetic field or electromagnetic waves. The magnetic influence could cause faulty operation of the scanner. Do not install the scanner in a sandy or dusty environment. Remove any dirt or dust adhering to the equipment. Do not install the scanner in an area subject to vibrations which could lead to incorrect operation of the equipment and a distortion of the scanned image. Do not install the scanner in an area: - where chemical reactions could occur - or the ambient air contains salt, oil or corrosive gas.

7 USAGE PRECAUTIONS Do not insert tools or objects: - in the scanner when the film carrier is not in position, - in the film carrier insertion area, - in the lamp area, - in the anti-dust filter area.
7.1 Precautions for scanning From an APS Film Cartridge
Due to the poor quality of some APS cartridges, we recommend that you remove the film from the APS cartridge before scanning it. The following precautions are to be taken when scanning an APS film cartridge: (refer to figure below):
Check that the APS film cartridge has been processed (white mark in position 4, IPI tab (*) bent) before inserting it into the scanner. Check that the flap (5) is closed. Do not take the film out of the APS cartridge. Do not disassemble the APS film cartridge. This could prevent the images from being scanned and may damage the scanner. Do not bring objects which have strong magnetic fields (magnets, loudspeakers, etc.) near the film cartridge. This could prevent the scanning of the digital data recorded on the APS film cartridge and the reading of the magnetic data. After processing, do not insert the film until it has completely dried. Inserting a film, which has just been processed, into the scanner may damage the film or cause the film to jam. Damaged APS film cartridges or film cartridges which have been used several times may cause errors. Remove the film from the cartridge to scan it. Check the leading edge of the film before inserting it into the scanner (when using film without cartridge). Adhesive tape or glue on the edge of the film may cause a scanner operating fault. An error may also occur if the leading edge of the film is bent. Edges may appear on the scanned images due to the position of the frames on the film. In this case, according to the menu, it may be possible to remove the edges.

060 311 711 B
01/2007
Always use gloves to handle the films so that fingerprints do not adhere to the surface. Do not touch the silver compound surface of the film with your fingers. Remove any dust or static electricity from the film using an anti-static brush, before inserting the film into the scanner. After processing, do not insert the film until it has completely dried. Inserting a film, which has just been processed, into the scanner may damage the film or cause the film to jam. The leading edge must not exceed 7 cm long.
Check the leading edge of the film before inserting it into the scanner. If the end of the film is bent or missing, cut the film (refer to figure). Adhesive tape or glue on the edge of the film may cause a scanner operating fault. Cut the tape (refer to figure) or carefully remove it. An error may occur if the curling of the film does not meet the following conditions: - Curling widthwise: 5mm maximum - Curling lengthwise 100mm - Uniform curve
User manual - IM 1500 PRO SCANNER OPERATION
After inserting the film, do not pull on or push the film by hand. After loading, scan the film as soon as possible. Edges may appear on the scanned images due to the position of the frames on the film. In this case, according to the menu, it may be possible to remove the edges. Use the "Manual cropping" function. Barcodes for notched films cannot be scanned and analysed. The frames can become displaced when scanning ultrathin film, such as duplicating film.
