Body Weight and BMI

BMI - Know Your Ideal Weight People are very concerned about their weight. But what is the basis for determining obesity or emaciation ? You should know your ideal weight first. The key is BMI.

What is BMI?

Abbreviations of the initials "B · M · I" of Body Mass Index (= physical index). It is an international standard to determine obesity. BMI can be obtained by means of very simple calculations.

BMI=Weight (kg) / Height (m) / Height (m) Body composition monitor calculates BMI based on registered personal data "height" and measured "weight"

Qmfbtf!dpogjsn! uif!ebub!ifsf" Weight Display example weight: 52.3kg

BMI Display example BMI: 20.3

31

The ideal weight is the weight when BMI is 22 What is your BMI? Generally, the ideal BMI is 22, because people maintaining this BMI value will seldom suffer diseases due to obesity or emaciation and can be longeval. The ideal weight, i.e., the weight when BMI is 22, is calculated as follows:

Ideal Weight (kg) = 22 × Height (m) × Height (m) Example: For a person tall 1.55 cm… 22×1.55×1.55 = 52.855 -> Approx. 52.9 kg However, since BMI is calculated with height and weight, determination on those athletes who are more muscular and therefore have a higher weight may not be accurate.

*1 "Invisible obesity" type with lower BMI and higher fat A type that body weight is lower than the standard and body fat percentage is higher. More fat, but muscle, blood, bone and other ingredients account for less proportion. If it continues, it will cause physical functional decline and damage your health. People of this type cannot be judged from the appearance, so it is hard to realize himself/herself. For a lack of sports or extreme weight reduction activities such as repeated dieting, even when food intake is not much, heat is easily turn into fat. So the balance of diet should be noted and exercise habit shall be formed in normal times. *2 "Muscle obesity" type with higher BMI and lower fat Looks obese, but fat is in or under standard. This type of people are mainly engaged in regular exercise or work with much exercise. There is no problem in current state. However, if they stop exercising, but continue the original eating habits, the intake of calories is relatively high compared to the amount of exercise. At the same time, the previously accumulated muscles are reduced; instead, fat is constantly increased. So, you could quickly become obese. Eating habits shall be noted after the amount of exercise is reduced.

Measuring Methods and Measuring Results

It was pointed out in the report of Obesity Diagnostic Criteria Research Committee of the Japan Society of Obesity, and learned from studies on visceral fat area and quantity of complications damaging health, if the visceral fat area value is over 100 cm2, quantity of complications will significantly rise, and average quantity of complications will be more than 1.5. If the visceral fat area value is over 150 cm2, quantity of complications will significantly rise, and average quantity of complications will be more than 2.

Visceral fat level classification

Before Measuring (various settings)

The more visceral fat there is, the higher the risk of diseases caused by lifestyle

Visceral fat obesity and subcutaneous fat obesity Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased levels of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common diseases such as hyperlipidemia and diabetes, which impairs the ability of insulin to transfer energy from the bloodstream and using it in cells. In order to prevent or improve conditions of common diseases, it is important to try and reduce visceral fat levels to an acceptable level. People with high visceral fat levels tend to have large stomachs. However, this is not always the case and high visceral fat levels can lead to metabolically obese. Metabolically obese (visceral obesity with normal weight) represents fat levels that are higher than average, even if a [Example of visceral fat person’s weight is at or below the obesity] (CT image of standard for their height.

Subcutaneous fat not only accumulates around the stomach but also around the upper arms, hips and thighs, and can cause a distortion of the body’s proportions. Although not directly linked to increased risk of disease, it is thought to increase pressure on the heart and other complications. Subcutaneous fat is not displayed in this unit, but is included in the body fat percentage.

RM and Skeletal Muscle

Increase skeletal muscle through sports Skeletal muscle is the muscle maintaining physical activity. Maintenance and increase of skeletal muscle is closely related to resting metabolism. RM and muscle are described below.

What is RM?

Regardless of your activity level, a minimum level of caloric intake is required to sustain the body’s everyday functions. Known as the resting metabolism, this indicates how many calories you need to ingest in order to provide enough energy for your body to function.

Qmfbtf!dpogjsn! uif!ebub!ifsf"

Resting metabolism accounts for 60%-70% of total energy consumption of a day The total energy consumption in 1 day is the sum of the following 3 items. (Refer to the figure below)

RM

Resting The energy necessary to metabolism sustain life

Display example RM: 1181 kcal

Skeletal Muscle Display example skeletal muscle (whole body): 28.7 %

Daily activity Energy consumed in daily activities such as Metabolism commuting, work, homework and hobbies Diet-induced Energy emitted in the form of heat thermogenesis after eating The ratio of these is 60%-70% for resting metabolism, 20%-30% for daily activity, and 10% for diet induced thermogenesis. This means that resting metabolism accounts for most of our daily energy consumption. If our daily caloric intake exceeds the amount of energy required for these activities, the additional calories can be stored as fat.

BM and muscle Muscle is divided into two types, muscle in internal organs, such as

What is skeletal muscle? the heart, and muscle attached to bones that is used to move the body. Skeletal muscle can be increased through exercise and other activity.

What is skeletal muscle percentage?

Percentage of skeletal muscle weight in body weight.

The device uses BI method to estimate your skeletal muscle percentage. (

This product feature is the measurement of skeletal muscle percentage. Build energy consumable habitus (not-easilyobese habits) by the means of increasing skeletal muscle and improving resting metabolism. Enhance muscle strength as well, to bring you a high quality of life.

Measuring Methods and Measuring Results Care and Maintenance

Resting metabolism will be reduced year by year after reaching a peak in the latter half of a teenager. This is because that body functions gradually decline as people get older. The decrease in skeletal muscle weight is the main reason. Even if the body muscle does not make any movement, it also consumes a certain amount of energy in one day and emits heat. Heat plays a part in "body temperature maintenance" of resting metabolism. If muscle weight is reduced, energy consumption within 1 day will be reduced. On the condition of a decline in resting metabolism, if one still keeps eating habits as when they were young, a "midlife obesity" consequence will be resulted. To prevent this from happening, we need to know our resting metabolism and keep exercising to maintain and increase skeletal muscle weight.

Shape not-easily-obese habitus by maintaining and increasing skeletal muscle!

Before Measuring (various settings)

Body age

Comprehensively assess your physical conditions through body age Body age is to indicate your body age from the resting metabolic aspect. "Body age" is a standard for comprehensive evaluation of one's "body" conditions.

What is body age?

Body age is based on your resting metabolism. Body age is calculated by using your weight, body fat percentage and skeletal muscle percentage to produce a guide to judge whether your body age is above or below the average for your actual age. To know your body age is useful to improve your health condition.

Qmfbtf!dpogjsn! uif!ebub!ifsf"

Even if the heights and weights of measurers are the same, differences in body composition and RM will also cause differences in body ages.

Body age

The figures below shows some examples of body age. Body age is "30 years old": fat is consistent with the standard value of the actual age. Body age is "25 years old":lower in fat, and higher in RM. Thus her body age is determined as "25 years old", which is younger than her actual age. Body age is "35 years old":higher in fat, and lower in RM. Thus, her body age is determined as "35 years old", which is older than her actual age.

Feature and Measuring Principle of Body Composition Monitor

Feature of body composition monitor Is the method of whole body measuring, which is not subject to daily variation. 1 Water content in our body tends to accumulate in our leg during day. That's why we usually feel dropsy at the feet at dusk or in the evening. In the morning and dusk, body resistance distribution will change, as water proportion in upper body and lower body changes. KaradaScan measures whole body resistance by using electrode of both hands and both feet. Therefore, it is less subject to variation of water content distribution in human body.

Basic data used to establish body composition formula, Collect by using measuring method and measuring device most suitable for various body compositions. Body fat: weighing method in water (Submerge your head into water pool and exhaust all air in your lung before measuring body weight. The method to calculate body fat in accordance with body density is based on Archimedes principle. ) Resting metabolism:breath analyzing device (used to analyze air composition in breath). It can be used to measure oxygen consumption of breath at quiet time to calculate resting metabolism.) V-Fat: X-ray CT (Computed Tomography) device (a medical device photographing images of transverse section with X-ray without body injury) The area of visceral fat can be calculated according to the transverse section of the position of the navel in abdomen. Subcutaneous fat and skeletal muscle: DXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) method (measuring body composition at different parts by quantifying bone quantity and body composition of 2 kinds of X rays with different wave length without the need of resolving body to calculate weight.) MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging System) (large number of hydrogen atomic nucleus contained in human body resonate with magnetic field and electric wave. Image hydrogen atomic nucleus and nuclear magnetic resonance to calculate human body composition.)

Measuring principle of body composition monitor Calculate body fat in accordance with resistance value. KaradaScan measures body resistance by using weak currency flowing through both hands and both feet (BI method*). * BI method (Bioelectrical Impedance/ biological resistance method). Tissues with more water content in human body tend to conduct electricity (such as muscle and vein) easily. Fat tissue almost conducts no electricity. The body feature is used to calculate rate of fat tissue and non-fat tissue. Currency flowing through human body is very weak (50 kHz, 500μA), which is not stimulant and is very safe to human body. In order to obtain body fat and other data from resistance between both hands and both feet, The five items, i.e., (1) resistance value, (2) height, (3) weight, (4) age and (5) gender are required, which are obtained in accordance with basic human data collected by the company independently.

Q&A of Body Composition Monitor ■ What is correct weight reduction? If you lose weight by going on a diet instead of taking exercise and neglect nutrition balance, even if your weight is reduced, resting metabolism will decrease as muscle (skeletal muscle) decreases and you are more likely to become fatter.
