This is a quide for new users of Test Drive 6, but also for people who want to know new things about the program. Starting from the beginning….

!1! – First run When TD6 is run for the first time, you should encounter a box like this:

Don’t worry, this is normal. It will happen everytime you run the program. Normally, all you do is hit “ok” but as this is a first run, you will need to set up a couple of things first.

!1! – Rendering Under the “Rendering” tab will be a bunch of checkboxes like this:

You will need to look this over if you want the game to run. Firstly, if you think your computer may not be able to handle TD6 at its best, you should drop the tick in the Texture Quality/Perfomance box down to “Performance.” This will configure the game to run faster on your system by disabling Tex Effects like smoke and lights. Moving it up to Quality will switch the game to a higher standard of graphics, best for high speed computers. Mind you, TD6 has enormous capacity to run on even slow systmes without 3D graphics cards as such, and this choice is generally up to you and your opinion. Also, the checkboxes on the left of the window will help make the game faster still by switching off things of your choice.

@2@ – Rasterizer Under the rasterizer tab will be this pane:

This menu allows to select what hardware the game will use to run. It is best left at “Best Available”, meaning the program will automatically find the best one to use, but if you beg to differ TD6’s choices then this choice is all yours.

#3# - Audio

This one barely needs to be explained. Purple monkey dishwasher. $4$ - Movie

Or this one, do do doo…

%5% - Testing Lastly, testing. This tab will bring up a couple of text fields and checkboxes.

This is mostly for the webmasters to understand (me excluded) so make of it what you will. I find it is best left alone. When all that is done, you can press ok and start playing. And if you want to change something, you can do so every game run.

^6^ - Playing

When you enter the game, you will first see the Pitbull and Infogrames logos, followed a by a shortened version of Cars by Fear Factor. After the game passes these (all of which except the last can be skipped by pressing space) you will meet the character creation screen:

(If you didn’t know, the spinning wheel is your cursor. Obviously. ) The first thing you will need to do here is create a player. Do so by clicking the, wait for it, Create New Player button. After this, you will meet the next screen:

The top box is for wrting in your players name. Do so and hit enter, and the other three will then become active. Select your new player with the arrows (It should already be selected) and click begin to hit the main menu.

&7& - Main Menu When a player signs in, this will be the first thing they see. Before any racing can commence, you will need a car. To get one: Enter the Race menu (Explained later). Only garage will be active. Click garage, and you will be taken to a screen like this:

Click “Buy” to enter the purchase screen:

Classes are group of cars classified by speed, handling, and openent difficulty. For this example, we will use Class 1. Clicking it will lead to the car selection screen:

“Credits” is the amount of money you have to spend “Price” is how much the car costs The text that reads “Lotus Elise” is the cras name and will change

The arrows switch between cars And selects takes you to the stats screen:

This shows you the cars information. If you are unhappy with the car, you can cancel the purchase by clicking cancel. (Obviously.) If you would like to change the cars colour before buying, hit paintshop. This will allow you to recolor the car:

Colour is the body colour of the car, while shade is the light and dark values of the chosen colour. If the car has a stripe, there will also be a fourth bar, to switch between painting the stripe or the body:

Clicking “purchase” confirms your selection and purchases the car. It also unlocks all items in the race menu. We will come back to the Garage menu later.

*8* - Race Menu The Race and Practise menus will be the most used in the game. This chapter focuses on the Race Menu:

Single Race: Starts a race with 5 opponents and a cash jackpot. Tournament Race: Starts an official race event – 4 tracks, 6 coms, big money. Cop Chase: Lets you be the enforcement and hunt down those pesky street racers. Challenges: Race against the clock in 5 areas. Garage: Upgrade, buy and manage your cars.

(9) – Single Race Clicking the single race button will take you to the single race screen where you can set up race bets, classes and other things:

The car you will be racing in is the one you have bought. The track is your choice. After this is done, hit “Race” to move to the betting screen:

Your bet: The amount of money you’d like to contribute to the winners prize. Your credits: How much money you have to spend. Maximum bet: The biggest amount of bet you can place. Minimum bet: The smallest amount of bet you can place. Note: For newbies, it is recommended to practise until you know a track well, because if you lose the race, you lose money. !10) – Racing At the start of all the races you’ll be prompted by the usual “3, 2, 1, Go!” Before seeing the play screen. The arrows will explain. Current lap

Time taken to complete race

Lap times Final lap warning

Tachometer

Map, the white dot is you, the blue dots oppenents, the yellow dots traffic and the red/blue dots coppers.

Current gear Placing, the big number is your place, the small one the number of cars racing.

To win a race you must come first place. You will then collect the jackpot – the amount of credits betted by all players.

!11! – Cop Chase In a cop chase, you command the cop car and must pull over all the drivers on the track to win. To start, bring up the cop chase menu:

First, use the arrows on the Select Track button to choose the venue. Then choose Select Cop Car to choose the car you’ll be using to pursue them. It should bring up something like this:

Choose with the arrows then hit select to see the cars stats:

Choose select again to confirm. Then choose Stop the Racers to start the chase.

!12@ - Cop Chasing The play screen in Cop Chase mode should look something like the picture. Once again, refer to the arrows. Arrests made Racer marker so far Radar

Tachometer

Current gear Mph/Kmh Readout To make an arrest you must knock into another car enough times to slow it down or stop it completely. The arrest is made automatically; a screen comes up like this:

The blue text shows the infractions the racer had made, and their award in credit. The green total is how much money it has made in total. This money is awarded at the end of the race wether you catch all five racers or not.

!13# - Challenges Challenges are races agaisnt the clock to get to the end of a track before the time runs out. The challenge menu looks like this:

Beating a challenge will earn you that challenges reward. The challenge menu is easy to navigate – just click a heading to start that challenge. A challenge race start with nothing but you and the road. That barely changes, except the traffic comes along aswell.

!14$ - Garage Menu The garage menu is the management office for all of your cars.

Once you have a car bought you can upgrade or sell it. Buy we have already been through, and sell is pretty self explanatory, so were going to focus on the upgrade menu:

!15% - Engines The engine menu has two headings: Buy, and Adjust.

Buy is pretty straight forward. Just choose a class, then click to install. Gearbox is more complicated, but you can use the left and right arrows to switch end if you think it is needed.

!16^ - Suspension Suspension is pretty much the same as Engines:

!17& - Brakes Brakes are the same again:

*

!18 - Tires Tires are different though, all you do is select the class then purchase:

That’s pretty much it from the garage menu, now all we have left is !19) – Options The options menu is the least used, yet the most packed:

Video options:

Resolution: The size of the game Texture Quality: How well the textures will be presented Detail: The amount of effects to use Use Fogging: Fade objects in from the horizon View Distance: How far something can be seen

Audio options:

Effect Volume: The volume of crashes, beeps and other stuff. Music Volume: Te volume of the music track. CD Track: The current song playing, name is above, artist below

Game options:

Speed Readout: The measurement of your speed in the game Checkpoint timers: Wether you will be time on the whole race or legs of it Traffic: How traffic behaves Cops: Wether police race with you Difficulty: How hard the game is

And lastly, controller options:

Click an item to select it, then hit a key to assign that key to the action. And that’s it for the manual. Everything else you’ll have to find out for yourself, but I thank readers whove made it this far very well. ;D
