Desk Top Publishing (DTP) This section is mainly involved in DTP processing and scanning jobs. The processing is done in such a way that the line drawings and graphics are also incorporated into the laid out pages to get a composite single page, laser-printer output on translucent sheets. This eliminates the process of making negatives as the output is directly used for plate making, thereby reducing the cost of printing. The section is well equipped with advanced computers, printers, scanners and software such as, MS Word, PageMaker, Corel and Photoshop, etc.

Printing Printing is one of the major activities of the institute. The section has three single colour sheet-fed offset printing machines and three doublecolour sheet-fed offset printing machines. The printing jobs carried out by the section include research journals, magazines, books, monographs, reports, brochures, etc. After obtaining the camera-ready pages on translucent sheets and scannings, the main steps involved in the production of a publication are negative/positive making, plate making, imposition before printing, and binding. The output of the printing section is around 30,000 pages per annum including seven thousand colour pages; the total number of impressions during the year were around four and a half crore.

Modernization Plan Since printing facility is the backbone of NISCAIR, it is necessary that this unit is kept well equipped with advanced machines to remain competitive in the publishing industry. In view of this and to further improve the quality of print production, a modernization plan for prepress and post-press is being prepared. It includes a system that would enable one-piece planned imposed four pages, which can be directly

Procurement of a four-colour offset printing machine, compatible with advanced features such as four-colour job at one go, is also in the pipeline.
