St. Marys Memorial Covered Bridge This bridge stands as a testament to “neighbors helping neighbors” even when those neighbors are hundreds of miles away. When a drought hit the south, Auglaize County farmers donated truckloads of hay and cash for grain to aid stricken farms in North Carolina. Since that first act of caring, the two groups have developed a unique friendship. In 1989, when Hurricane Hugo smashed into the Carolinas, it left hundreds of downed trees, including several large White Oaks. An old-fashioned shingle-cutting machine was found and 16,000 shingles later, this covered bridge had a roof. Several North Carolina residents made the trip to St. Marys for the groundbreaking ceremonies. The entire project was a community effort with many local individuals and businesses donating money, products and services.

Enjoy

all that

Grand Lake St. Marys has to offer

Constructed as a feeder lake for the Miami-Erie Canal, Grand Lake St. Marys, at its completion in 1845, was the largest man-made lake in the world. It was formed by raising two walls of earth, from ten to twentyfive feet high, called the East and West embankments. These walls formed a high basin to retain the water. The reservoir rests on the summit between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Now Ohio’s largest inland lake, Grand Lake St. Marys is a prime recreational area offering a variety of activities for the whole family. With over 13,500 acres of water and 52 miles of shoreline (much of it accessible to the public), Ohio’s “Other Great Lake” is a great site for picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating and camping.

Grand Lake St. Marys is open zoned for skiing and has unlimited horsepower for power boating. A 300-foot “no wake” zone provides for safety and shoreline protection. There are seven stateoperated launch ramps providing boaters access to the lake. Private launch ramps are also available at marinas along the shoreline. Sailing and jet skiing are very popular on the lake.

Fishing

Fishing is a year round affair on Grand Lake St. Marys. Since the lake is shallow (average 8-9 ft. In depth), it warms quickly in the spring activating large mouth bass and large catches of bluegills and crappies. There are professionally run and organized fishing tournaments held every year. The lake is considered one of the finest “pan fishing” areas in the state, with good populations of crappie and yellow perch. Walleye fry and fingerlings have been constructed as a feeder lake for stocked and a significant walleye population is developing with goodsized walleye reported being caught. For an up-to-date fishing report, visit www.SeeMore.org and click on “Life on the Lake.”

Lighthouses . . . You will be in awe as you view these stunning lighthouses on Grand Lake St. Marys. Although it is an oddity for an inland lake to possess a lighthouse, Grand Lake St. Marys is proud to boast of three such structures.

Northwood Lighthouse This 1923 Eddystone lighhouse is a monument to the original English Channel beacon.

. . . on Grand Lake St. Marys

In the early days, it operated under a government license from April to November. Located on the north shore between Celina and St. Marys. Viewing from lake only. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Rotary Lighthouse Behm’s Lighthouse

This beautiful stately structure was dedicated on April 19, 2003 in memory of Stanley Mike Grimm, who was killed in an auto accident in 1997. The operating marine light can be seen up to seven miles.

This forty-foot working lighthouse welcomes visitors to Celina each evening. Built in 1986 by the Celina Rotary Club, this structure has a wrought iron observation deck encircling it for those who wish a “grander” view of the lake. It is located on US-127 and Lake Shore Dr. in Celina.

It can be viewed on the south shore of the lake at 5444 Behm Rd. at Behm’s Landing. 12

President William Howard Taft signed a bill in 1908 to authorize a monument in honor of those soldiers who died serving under St. Clair and Anthony Wayne. Dedicated in July 1913, the base of the 103-foot monument holds the bones of the fallen soldiers who died in the battles at Fort Recovery.

SR-119 and SR-49 Fort Recovery, OH 45846

The nine-foot tall statue on the west face of the monument depicts a frontiersman facing the beautiful unsettled land into which he triumphed.

Erected in 1812 under orders from General William Henry Harrison, Fort Amanda was a base of supplies for Harrison’s army during the War of 1812. The remains of 75 soldiers, each simply marked “Unknown Soldier, War of 1812” lie beside the Auglaize River. A gray, granite shaft monument was erected in 1915. Open dawn to dusk May-October.

Miami-Erie Canal

St. Marys, Ohio

Irish, French and German immigrants labored for 31 cents a day and a jigger of whiskey to manually move trees, rocks and soil to create the “big ditch” through the wilderness to improve transportation and commerce. Traversing 249 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo, the canal was begun in 1825, built in sections and completed in 1845. Much of the canal is still intact, with many historic structures, bridges and aqueducts along the way. The towpath along SR-66 from Minster to Lock 14 north of St. Marys is a great place to walk and enjoy nature’s beauty. Designated a State Scenic Byway.
