Fostering Independence, GRIT, and Personalized Learning in Grade One Outlook Elementary School – Sun West School Division August 2018 – March 2019
DNA Profiles: Dreams, Needs, and Abilities
Neutral, Calm, and Peaceful Classroom Environment: with plants, calming music, variety of seating options
Organized environment, group learning and collaboration
Hands On and Sensory Based Learning: inquiry-based learning with specific question in mind – children then given materials to come to conclusions on their own before direct teaching of concept
Promoting Social Responsibility, Social Skills and Kindness: We started the year by really building our classroom community as bucket fillers. Each month we did something kind for the school or community. One example is when we made Kindness Hearts – we sneakily delivered them to each staff member in hopes to fill their bucket. We often dressed up in our Kindness Superhero Outfits when doing kind deeds.
Zones of Regulation and Peace Corner
When dealing with conflict and emotions, Zones of Regulation were used to reflect on the how and why to what was going on at that time. Our Peace Corner was used in particular by students with higher behavioral needs who needed a separate, private space to help re-regulate and come back to the ‘green zone’. Our Peace Corner had whiteboard activities, reflection page, books, and stuffed animals. Time was regulated at this this centre with a 5minute light timer.
