Module 2 - GPS

GPS Applications P.L.N. Raju [email protected]

iirs

Module 2 - GPS Applications • Position • Navigation / Route Navigation • Time application (Indian Railways) • Tracking (Mobile GPS) • Precision Farming • Deformation studies • Control networks • Kinematics Applications • Social services

iirs

Route navigation

• Primary application of GPS • All GPS instruments are equipped for route navigation • Accuracy depends on precision of GPS • Very good tool for many applications

iirs

Control networks

• Precise control networks can be done faster with GPS like SOI GTS • No need of visibility and tedious field works can be avoided

iirs Real time kinematics applications • Typical RTK applications include such things as land surveying, geodesy, monitoring of natural and human structures (for example, dams, buildings, and bridges), and automated machine control (construction and mining equipment, trains and aircraft)

GPS deformation studies

Dual frequency measurements GTS reference stations Post Processing accuracies up to 5 mm in relative / 15mm in absolute • Mask angle 20 degrees • Choke ring antennas • Avoid Electrical installations

iirs

Precision Farming

• Precision farming can be defined as the gathering of information dealing with spatial and temporal variation within a field and then using that information to manage inputs and practices • Precision farming is made possible by linking computers, on-the-go sensors, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and other devices.

GPS Tracking

• Tracks the individual fitted with GPS receiver • Communicates back to control station • Wrist watches fitted with GPS • Vehicles fitted with GPS • GPS enabled Mobile Phones • Coordinated Tracking for Fishermen • Wildlife Radio collaring and tracking

NOKIA 6210

• Navigate quickly and easily with A-GPS navigation and Nokia Maps • Find your way by car or by foot, with a compass for pedestrian navigation • Take quality pictures and video using the 3.2megapixel camera with flash and panorama feature • See maps, pictures, and videos on the impressive 2.4" QVGA 320 x 240 resolution display • Browse the internet, send email, and download content quickly via high-speed 3.5G* connections

Mobile GPS

How Mobile Mapping works?

• MM works on the principle of wireless communication by radio communication / cellular telephone systems • MM systems work on high level communication protocols through second generation (2G) or third generation systems • HTML, WAP and XML S/W support for MM applications

iirs

Mobile GPS How Mobile Mapping works?

• MM services are server based and wireless recipient at client level • Client devices: - Pagers, pocket PC, Palm PDA and handsets etc • Query and analysis at Server side, advanced possible at client

Fleet Management

• The most basic function in all Fleet Management systems, is the vehicle tracking component. This component is usually GPS based, but sometimes it can be based on a Cellular triangulation platform.
