A RESOLUTION By the Houghton County Democratic Party on United States Law and Policy Regarding LGBT Americans Whereas President Obama, while campaigning, made clear promises to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and "Don't Ask Don't Tell" as part of a larger platform of "real change for all LGBT Americans"; Whereas President Obama has recently reiterated his commitment to these promises; Whereas President Obama's credibility, as well as the credibility of the Democratic Party, depend on his ability to carry through on his commitments; Whereas President Obama has deferred the responsibility to achieve these specific promises to Congress; Whereas President Obama's supporters have understood from early in his campaign that it would take all of us working together for him to accomplish the sweeping change we elected him to bring about, e Houghton County Democratic Party hereby resolves that our representatives in Congress, Congressman Bart Stupak, and Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, be urged to support President Obama's platform of change for LGBT Americans by proactively extending every effort within their means to ensure quick and positive action on these issues, specifically: • • • • •
Introduction and passage of legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act; Passage of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009 which will repeal the policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and allow all Americans the opportunity to serve their country; Passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act Passage of the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act Final passage of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act
