Fox fur being turned into coats and other apparel. Fun F u r F ac t s ver 40 million animals are killed world wide each year and 30 million of them are on fur farms. In the fur industry, an animal that has fur is known as a furbearer. Animals with no fur are referred to as “naked”. Fake fur is called faux fur and is made from synthetic materials that mimic the characteristics of real fur.

To make a single fur coat you must kill at least 55 mink, 18 red foxes, eleven silver foxes, 100 chinchillas, 30 rabbits, 14 otters, 40 sables, 9 beavers, 125 ermines. First they skin the animal and try to get as much skin of as they can with as
little damage as possible. Second they scrape the inside of the skin to remove any muscle or fat that is still attached so it doesn’t decay. Third they clean the whole piece of skin with a chemical treatment called carroting, this usually turns the tips of the hair red. If it is whole that you are getting they all you have to do is shear the fur off of the sheep.

From what organism is fur harvested? Fur is harvested from many animals including the fox, the rabbit, the mink, the beaver, the stoat (ermine), the otter, the sable, the seal, the cat, the dog, the coyote, and the chinchilla.
