So, let’s do the consonants first. • T: What’s this sound? • Ss: try to make sound • T: [p] (writes it on board), and what word begins with that sound? • Ss: try to make word • T: “pile” (writes it on board) Repeat with all IPA sounds: p pill b bill t till d dill k kill g gill ? ill f fill v villain θ three ð them s same i beat ı bit e bait ε bet æ bat ^ but Main Activities

IPA game T: OK, now we’re going to practice all of these sounds with an “IPA game” (hold up sheet). It’s very simple. You just roll the dice, move your piece that amount, pronounce the sound and make a word with that sound. If the word you made is correct, you can stay. If it is wrong, you have to go back to your previous position. After you make a correct word, write it down on the square and nobody else can use that word. <Example> For example, I roll a 2. I move 2 spaces and pronounce [t], and I make a word “down”. Can I stay? Ss: No T: How many do I go back? Ss: 2 T: If I say “team” what happens? Ss: stay T: and… Ss: write it down T: Good. Go! Mahjong (get Tinny to teach, every time you use a tile you have to say a word with that sound) Wrap up T: OK, what sound is difficult to pronounce? Ss: “Them” “Three” (listen and repeat) T: OK, give me a sound with [p] in it. Ss: “Pill” (Choose different sounds) T: What’s this sound: Asia Ss: š (Ss try to identify) Contingency Plan If Tinny, doesn’t come play –ed or –s ending game. Homework Easy: Play IPA game with your friends. Difficult: Write down new word for each IPA sound.
