FINDING ETHOS Voice over: Once upon a time, deep, deep in the ocean, there was a father clown fish named MARLIN MARLIN: Help! Help! My son was taken for me! DORY: Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming <Bumb> DORY: Who are you? Why are you here? Why am I here? MARLIN: Help me! I’m looking for my son Ethos! DORY: Hi! My name is Dory! Wait, I think I lost my memory again. Who are you looking for? Logos? MARLIN: No! Logos is the method of reasoning and argumentation employed by the speaker. DORY: Oooohh! So who are you looking for, Pathos? MARLIN: No! Pathos is method of reasoning and argumentation employed by speaker. DORY: Really! Wow! So your son is name is… MARLIN: ETHOS! DORY: What ethos? MARLIN: Ethos is the character of the speaker or the speaker’s credibility DORY: ooooohhh! So what do you call Ethos plus Logos plus Pathos! MARLIN: What? DORY: THE THREE FACTORS OF PERSUASION! MARLIN: I don’t care. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I want to find my son. DORY: I know! I know! Let ask somebody for directions!
MARLIN: Okay. So who do we ask for directions? DORY: Oh! Look! Sharks! MARLIN: Where? Let’s hide. DORY: oh! Don’t worry they’re my friends. MARLIN: Are you sure? Sharks are not friends, they’re predators. MARLIN: Hey! Wait! <Marlin follows Dory> DORY: Excuse me sir! Have you seen his son, ETHOS? SHARK 1: huh? I don’t know any ETHOS around here. SHARK 2: Wait! Is he the one who is trustworthy, competent, sincere, attractive and dynamic? SHARK 3: Or, is he the one who is the receiver’s impression of the message source? SHARK 1: Ah! I remember, he’s the good man speaking well. SHARK 2 & 3: Oh! Yeah! He’s the image held of a communicator at a given time by a receiver. DORY: Can do give us some directions? SHARK 1: Only if you can tell us the four nature of ethos. Or else we will EAT you! DORY: Marlin! Marlin! Can you help me here? MARLIN: Ah! I know this one! Ethos is varying from individual to individual from group to group. DORY: Another one! MARLIN: Changing through time! DORY: Last two.
MARLIN: Being personal and situational DORY: Last one, you can do it! MARLIN: Being composite! SHARK 3: Very good! Ethos went that way!
SCENE 2 <marlin and dory swims towards the turtles> CRASH: Hey! Dude! MARLIN: Oh! Look a talking turtle! DORY: Have you seen Ethos? CRASH: Oh! Yeah! I met him! He has such a dynamic character. DORY: Really! Can you please describe him! CRASH: Extrinsic or Initial Ethos… DORY: What? Can you please explain? CRASH: When we were talking it was like I know him. He has a good character, competent and trustworthy. MARLIN: Really, what more? CRASH: Intrinsic or Transactional? MARLIN: What do you mean? CRASH: When we were talking, his credibility grows higher and higher then lower. DORY: Interesting, anything else? CRASH: Terminal!
DORY and MARLIN: HUH? CRASH: Well, it’s like this. He looked so lost, I felt sorry for him. And he said he missed his father so much, he almost cried, DUDE! MARLIN(to DORY): Dory, I think this turtle is crazy, let’s go! DORY: Okay, bye bye Crash, thanks for the help! CRASH: You’re welcome dude!
SCENE 3 <Marlin and dory approaches the whale> MARLIN: Excuse me sir! Have you seen my son, ETHOS? WHALE: Sorry! I talk only to fishes who have the three ethical considerations for a speaker with ethos. DORY: What are they? WHALE: First, a fish must display adequate knowledge of the subject spoken about. DORY: I display adequate knowledge. WHALE: That’s not enough! The fish must be sincere as he communicates to his listeners in order to gain trust. MARLIN: I’m sincere! WHALE: Last, the fish must appear well groomed and personable, behaving with proper decorum. <Marlin and dory checks and arranges their tail and ‘hair’> DORY: We look well-groomed now; can you tell us where ethos is? WHALE: Sorry! I don’t know where he is good bye.
SCENE 4: <marlin and dory emerges from the sea water’s> PELICAN: I can help you. I can tell you where Ethos is. All you have to do is do the listeners part. DORY and MARLIN: OKAY! PELICAN: No matter how good I am as a speaker, it is no use if you do not listen carefully. You should be in good mood and attitude, and believe in what I am saying. You should judge me by how I look, how I smell, and what I eat. Deal? DORY and MARLIN: DEAL! PELICAN: Okay! I’ll take you to him! SCENE 5 CONCLUSION Voice over: And so it came to be that Marlin found his son Ethos and learned about him the three factors of persuasion, the definitions of ethos and nature of ethos form the sharks, the dynamics of ethos from Crash, three ethical
considerations from the whale, listener’s part from the Pelican and ethos from the Philippine setting from his son Ethos. Voice over: And that is our report, brought to you by group 3.
