We know the support of family and friends plays a significant role in the treatment process. LAS VEGAS RECOVERY CENTER

ADDICTION & treatment What Happens at the Family Renewal Program ? Our specially-designed Family Renewal Program helps family members start on their own journey of discovery and recovery. The intensive four-day workshop begins with a welcome session that highlights the topics to be covered. Each day lectures are presented by our team of addiction experts and are followed by process groups that allow family members to discuss their personal concerns, as well as ask questions about the subjects presented. These educational lectures are interactive and family participation is strongly encouraged. Family members will learn how to identify issues and receive support so that they too can begin their own recovery process. In addition to our intensive four-day workshop, we offer a weekly family support group. We know that having a family member enter treatment is extremely stressful, but we are here to assist you while your family member is in treatment and after he or she returns home. You are not alone. Our family program can help you learn skills to start the healing process and begin to live and enjoy life free from the confines of addiction. Our highly qualified team of addiction and family professionals include Rob Hunter, Ph.D., Consultant, Psychological Services; M e l Po hl, MD, FASAM, Medical Director of LVRC; Claudia Black, Ph.D., Senior Clinical & Family Services Advisor

What Is Addiction ? The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as “a primary, chronic, neurobiological disease, i.e., a brain disease; with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations.” Addiction is a progressive disease and is potentially fatal, if left untreated. Whether a loved one is using alcohol, prescription drugs, or street drugs, we refer to the addictive use of substances as the disease of addiction. The destructive force of this disease not only incapacitates the individual who has addiction problems, but often destroys the most important interpersonal relationship one can have—the family. Anyone who has a loved one suffering from this disease and/or drug dependence may know the fear, anxiety, embarrassment, shame, and anger it can cause. In other words, families get sick along with the addicted person. Watching a loved one in the grip of addiction can be agonizing and can leave family members feeling confused. But there is hope, and recovery is possible. For treatment to be successful— whether for the addict or family—it is helpful to understand the many aspects of addiction. Addiction is a family disease with many dynamics. The family dynamics of addiction can be painful, and if not addressed, may make the recovery process difficult for the whole family. Addiction can be as painful for the family as it is for the addict. No one wants a loved one to be sick, and many addicts use for years before the family is aware of it.

Watching a loved one in the grip of addiction can be agonizing and can leave family members feeling confused. But there is hope, and recovery is possible.

Addiction is the only disease that convinces the individual that he or she does not have it. Addiction is the only disease that also may convince the family their loved one does not have it! At LVRC, we understand these dynamics and understand how hard it may be for the family to comprehend this basic truth: As the addict becomes sicker with addiction or drug dependence, so do family members. The addictive use of substances does not happen overnight, and over time the consequences of using addictively affect the individual and the family physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Addiction is a primary disease with many manifestations that are not all drug-related. Many addicts develop a pattern of behaviors and thought processes that are all part of the disease—obsession, compulsion, self-centeredness, minimization, rationalization, and denial. Once locked in this downward spiral, the individual experiences endless bouts of self-hatred, selfdestruction, remorse, guilt, and shame.

What Can the Family Do? The disease of addiction can be treated. To start with, it will be helpful for the family to stop thinking of a loved one as weak or immoral or lacking willpower. Addiction is not about willpower or morality. The addicted family member is sick and needs to be treated so that he or she can start to heal. Looking at addiction as a disease may conflict with some of the beliefs many families hold; however, our goal is to help families understand as much as possible about these concepts. Family members may experience feelings of helplessness, anger, frustration, and depression. The more helpless a person feels, the more he or she will struggle to control, dominate, or manipulate others. Often the misguided efforts of others to be helpful only make the situation worse. This is common to both the addict and family members. In order to survive the chaos and unpredictability, family members often adopt certain coping skills that do not serve them well. Family discord then becomes a major source of stress for everyone involved. Patience and understanding are essential. The habits families have become accustomed to can be broken, but it takes time.

We help family members start their own recovery journey so that all involved will have a successful treatment experience. We understand there is much to deal with as a loved one and his or her family begins to tackle the damage caused by this disease. The Family Renewal Program at Las Vegas Recovery Center can help family members start their own recovery journey so that all involved will have a successful treatment experience. Treatment Is Only the First Step to Recovery Having an addicted or drug dependent individual enter treatment can be a frightening and confusing time for the whole family. Family members may experience a sense of relief because their loved one is getting help, but then may feel abandoned and lost because they are hurting too. This is why LVRC is so committed to treating family members, as well as the client who enters our program.
