Exercise 1 - Domain LookUp In this exercise, you will learn the following:

Task 1 - WHOIS Lookup Tool There are a number of tools that you can use to lookup information available on a particular domain. You can use online tools or desktop versions. This lab uses ICANN WHOIS. However, for online tools, you can use different variants, such as:

To use the online WHOIS Lookup tool, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Ensure you have powered the required devices indicated in the introduction, then connect to PLABWIN702. The desktop is displayed.
Click on the Internet Explorer icon in the system tray. The Internet Explorer window is displayed.
Step 2 In the address bar, enter:
http://whois.icann.org/
Step 3 Use the search textbox to enter a domain name, such as google.com or Hotmail.com. Important: Please note that whois.icann is an external website not controlled by Practice Labs. As a result, the features and appearance of the website may periodically change. More information on using whois.icann can be found on the website. You now be presented with the Registrant, Admin and Tech contact information for the queried domain. There is also additional details displayed relating to the queried domain.

The results are now displayed.
Note: We have not provided a screenshot here as the appearance of the whois.icann website may change. Close Internet Explorer. Important: The following steps are carried out on a different device.
Step 5 Connect to PLABWIN701. Before we use SmartWhois to perform a WHOIS lookup, we first need to disable the AVG Shield. To do this, navigate to the notification area and click on Show hidden icons. Click on the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012.

Click on the Anti-Virus option
Step 7 De-select the Enable Resident Shield option. This action will naturally de-select Ask me before removing threats as shown in the next step.
Step 8 Click Save changes to finish. Then press the close button to exit out of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012 and to return to the desktop.
Step 9 You will now install and use SmartWhois to perform a WHOIS lookup.
Step 10 Open Windows Explorer. Go to DVD Drive R and copy SmartWhois folder.
Step 11 Then paste it to Administrator\Downloads folder.
Step 12 Further navigate to the SmartWhoIs folder. Double-click setup.
Step 13 The Welcome wizard is displayed. Click Next.
Step 14 On the License Agreement page, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
Step 15 On the Destination Folder page, keep the default path and click Next.
Step 16 On the Optional Components page, deselect all options and click Next.
Step 17 On the Additional Settings page, keep the default settings and click Next.
Step 18 On the Ready to Install the Program page, click Next.
Step 19 The SmartWhois Setup dialog box is displayed. Click Yes.
Step 20 On the Setup Wizard Complete page, click Finish.
Step 21 The SmartWhois application is invoked. The SmartWhois dialog box is displayed. Click Yes.
Note: If the program finds available updates please click No. If you accidently click Yes, the below steps may differ slightly.
Step 22 You now need to add a proxy to SmartWhois to allow the service to run the query over the internet. Click on the Settings menu and choose Options.
Note: This may not be required in a production environment.
Step 23 Make sure Use proxy server is ticked then click on Manage proxy servers.
Step 24 Click Add and configure the following settings:
Proxy server type: Http Host name: proxy Port number: 8080
Click OK then Close.
Step 25 In the IP, host or domain textbox, enter a domain that you want to investigate and click Query. The below site can be used to query name to IP information. http://www.dnsstuff.com
Note: The results may take a while.
Step 26 The results are displayed. Close SmartWhois.
Leave the devices you have powered on in their current state and proceed to the next exercise.
