Excellence in teaching and learning for project management

The purpose of this guest editorial is to call for abstracts on the subject of Excellence in Teaching and Learning of Project Management. The accepted papers are to be presented at the 3rd Conference of the same subject at Bournemouth University on the 13th and 14th September 2007. The best 10 of the papers will also be published in a Special Edition of the International Journal of Project Management in November 2007. At Bournemouth University Business School, now a part of the Universities Institute for Business and Law there have been two conferences on the topic of Excellence in Teaching, Learning for Project Management. The first conference was held in September 2003 with papers presented on invitation. The feedback from that first conference suggested that the energy generated should not be lost. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ralph Levene from The Cranfield School of Management with speakers from several other Universities such as, Bath, OU, Bristol, and Portsmouth. The Association for Project Management was represented by Miles Shepherd who chaired the conference. From the HEA, Ailsa Nicholson presented a paper and they offered to host and publish the proceedings on their web site, address: http://www.business.heacademy. ac.uk/resources/links/bandm/pmconferencefull.pdf Planning over the next two years between 2003 and 2005 resulted in the second successful conference with nine more papers on the same topic of Excellence in the Teaching and Learning for Project Management being presented, this time with a focus on assessment. At the second conference the keynote speaker was Professor Francis Hartman from Calgary University Canada, supported again by additional invited speakers from the APM, and several Universities. The proceedings of the second conference are also available at the web address . On the Thursday evening of each conference a dinner was held where the delegates and speakers could continue their discussions generated from the papers presented. In 2003 Frances Crambook a Research Fellow from Bournemouth University gave her after dinner speech on the topic of Oral History Projects. The after dinner speech was pre-

sented in 2005 by Geoff Kemp who gave an insight into the realities and practical issues of the supply chain management and project management of Sunseeker International Sports Boats, based in Poole. The plan now is to run a third conference on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th September 2007. However, for the 2007 conference the format will change to having refereed papers, 10 of which will be selected and published in a Special Edition of the International Journal of Project Management in November 2007. The order of events will follow this schedule: April 2006. Call for abstracts on the topic of Excellence of Teaching and Learning for Project Management in IJPM. This should contain approximately 500 words, please also include up to a maximum of five key words. Abstracts to arrive by 2nd June 2006. Replies to all authors by 28 July 2006. Completed papers to be submitted by 19 January 2007. Comments from the Review Panel returned to authors on 6th April 2007. Revised papers returned to Bournemouth University by 1st June 2007. Final Review of papers, selection of best 10 for IJPM and forwarding onto Elsevier 27 July 2007. 3rd Conference of Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Project Management at Bournemouth University 13th–14th September 2007. Publication of selected 10 papers in the November 2007 IJPM. It is envisaged that the topics included could cover a wide spectrum of pedagogy within project management. For example, these could include: issues of what to teach, the different methods used to distinguish teaching from educating, strategies used in the assessment of team and individual work, benefits and problems of using multi-choice questions, reflective learning, assessment and feedback, uses of web based and e-learning, field work and case studies, approaches used from FdA to Masters programmes.

This list could go on, however, it is not the intention to limit the range of topics within the subject area, but simply to see what research and ideas have been undertaken or are taking place. During the 2003 and 2005 Conferences there was only one stream. However, for the 2007 Conference, if there are critical masses of papers addressing a range of topics then these will be grouped and placed into different streams. While only 10 papers can be published in the November 2007 IJPM all other papers will be published, ideally through the HEA as with the 2003 and 2005 conference papers. If you wish to submit a paper, please, in the first instance, send an abstract of approximately 500 words indicating a maximum of five key words to the e-mail

address below. I look forward to reading your work and meeting you at the conference at Bournemouth University in September 2007.
