SECTION 2 – Case Study
[Total = 10 marks]
Write the answers for this section in the answer booklet provided. Attempt ALL questions. Questions are worth 5 marks each. For each question, provide a response of approximately 1–2 paragraphs. Case Study Communication Conflict Ted is the project manager of a team of six people who are involved in developing an eprocurement Website for the delivery of goods and services to the government sector. Two members of the team seem to be experiencing severe conflict. Joe works as a back-end database programmer, whilst Anne works as a front-end interface designer. Anne describes Joe as self-centred and egotistical whilst Joe sees Anne as lacking energy and too laid-back to get the job done. Their conflict has reached the stage where they will not talk to each other. They now want separate work environments, and an intermediary to act as a communication gopher between them. They refuse to attend weekly team / status meetings, if the other is present, and Anne has indicated she is considering taking legal action against Joe for inappropriate comments made. A union official has been contracted by Anne to help her with her case. (Adapted from Confliffe, 1991, p201)
Question 11 Outline the problems presented in this case study. How could technology be used to enhance information distribution between the troubled parties? Provide Ted a suggestion for improving communications between Anne and Joe. [2+2+1=5 Marks] Question 12 What is the formula for calculating the number of communi cations channels on a project? Given that there are currently six people on the team, how many different communication channels are there? How many more communications channels would there be counting in the intermediary communication person and the union official? [1+2+2=5 Marks] [Total = 50 marks] END OF EXAMINATION
