Ethical Dilemma Dental Hygiene 1 Jessica Fox and Erika Olson A senior student was in search for a mock boards or boards patient. This student

searched in a patient's record that they had never seen before. They noticed that this patient had a lot of calculus and was interested in using them as a mock board or boards patient. This

patient was being seen by another student. During this patient's visit, the senior student approached and asked the patient if, due to what was seen in their record, they could use them as

their mock board or boards patient. The patient said no. After the senior student left the

patient asked their student how the senior knew about what was in their mouth and if they had looked in their record. The student told the patient that they had looked in their record. The fact that this person who had never seen her before had looked into their record and was interested in using them as a board patient bothered the patient.

After looking at the core values, we do not believe that the student followed the code of ethics. The autonomy of the patient was violated because the senior student did not ask the

___

patient before looking into their chart. They did not fully inform the patient of what they were doing. Not informing the patient of what they were doing also violated

of being

truthful and disclosing information to the patient. This is something we as patients would not want someone to do to us so justice and fairness was not adhered to. The senior student did

not have any contract with that patient to look into their record or work on them. They did not follow the HIPPA laws and violated the patient's fidelity. We cannot look into someone else's chart without the patient's ok or seeing the patient

We believe that the senior student should have asked before she looked into the patient's chart to find their board patient. A better option would have been to notify the students on the floor that they are in search of a potential patient and have them be on the

lookout for them.
