COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ESL program
Montecito Fine Arts College of Design’s ESL Program operates on a 14-week term. The normal schedule is Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm, except Level VII and VIII TOEFL Preparation (Monday through Thursday 9 am – 4 pm). New students will be required to take an unofficial ESL Placement Test to assess their current English language ability and to determine appropriate grade level placement. Enrolled students may opt to test out of their current ESL grade level anytime during the term to advance to the next grade level; however, students must receive a passing score before advancing to the next grade level. At the end of each term, all students must take the exam to test out of their current grade level and must receive a passing score before advancing to the next grade level. Students who do not satisfactorily pass the exam must retake the course until he/ she feels they are ready to retake the grade level exam. Level I (Beginner) This beginner’s course introduces students who have minimal knowledge of the English language to simple spoken phrases and writing simple sentences. Listening and speaking skills are essential building blocks for the foundation and development of reading and writing skills; therefore students will engage in basic in-class conversations to increase listening comprehension and speaking skills.
Level III (Intermediate)
Students in this intermediate ESL course will practice writing and editing short paragraphs, deliver short oral presentations, and develop coherent and accurate sentence structure. Students will also explore communicating with formal and informal language and focus on attentive listening and improved communication through figurative language and idiomatic expressions. Prerequisite: Level II
Level IV (Intermediate) To gain increasing fluency in written and oral English, students will begin demonstrating critical thinking and comprehension abilities through the process of writing, sentence structure, word choice, grammar usage, and improved speaking skills. Prerequisite: Level III
Level V (Advanced) Students will begin applying and demonstrating critical thinking: students will apply advanced knowledge of the language through interpreting idioms, analogies, expanded vocabulary, figures of speech, and metaphors. Literary text will be assigned and students will need to read the text and comprehend the information (e.g., theme, plot, setting, and character development) through oral and written detailed responses. Prerequisite: Level IV
Level VI (Advanced) Advanced level students are asked to apply their critical thinking abilities by analyzing the assigned reading materials and writing and editing literary essays. Students are engaged in longer conversations, advanced-level dialogue, and intensive practice for college-level reading and writing assignments.
No Prerequisite
Prerequisite: Level V
Level II (Beginner)
Level VII & VIII: TOEFL Preparation
Students in this course will continue developing basic communication and comprehension skills by further developing listening, speaking, writing and reading competency. Continuous vocabulary building, learning grammatical structures, classroom participation, and reading and writing exercises are integrated into the daily lesson plans to improve English fluency.
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam is required for non-native English speakers to test into an American college or university. Our TOEFL preparation courses are divided into two levels: Level VII and Level VIII. The TOEFL preparation courses are designed to familiarize students with the test format, simulate practice tests, and intensively train students in test strategies for the four sections (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) of the exam.
