Book Details: With the growing recognition of social sciences and humanities to the issues of environment and the destruction of life sustaining external physical environment, existence of man has become a global concern. Scientists and sociologists welcome rapid growth and development, but the concept of sustainable development is still a great challenge for us to overcome. The concept of sustainable development has been defined as a kind of development that meets the needs of the future generations to meet their own needs. T he paradigm of sustainable development is an outcome of the concept of developmetalism and environmentalism. Population explosion, rapid industrialization and exploitation of natural resources is resulting into ecological imbalance, scarcity of resources, pollution and many such problems. This ecological crisis and fight for the acquisition of powerful resources give rise to environmental conflict. Today this conflict and crisis has become not only a threat but also a matter of global concern. Even development becomes a threat if it is not sustainable. The concept of sustainable development advocates a balance between demand and supply of resources. United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) declared that human beings are at the center of concerns for sustainable development, its ultimate goal being human welfare. Economic development can be sustained if the total stock of resources, human capital, physical reproducible capital and environmental resources decrease overtime. In the Indian context economic development can contribute significantly to the two way dynamic functional relationship that exists between development and environment because both are crucial variables of society. Sustainable development can be made possible through methods such as organic farming, efficient
political system, optimum utilization of resources and stable and high level of economic growth. The articles in the book deal with the theoretical frameworks and different approaches towards sustainable development. Observations and articles related to environmental political discourses, the role of social sciences in environmental issues, other important dimensions of sustainable development, the role of science and technology, orientation of investments and technological changes and their consistency also are of great significance and relevance.
