What does Jahiliyah mean?


Islam calls the pagan life of Arabs 'Jahiliyah' (ignorance). This label specifically identified the lifestyle to be found in the land of the Arabs before Islam. It included the beliefs and customs of the pagan Arabs who lived in a most decadent and perverse manner. This stage in history was full of chaos and corruption, and witnessed a decline in the sociology and ideology of the age. This was because the signs of truth had disappeared in that dark historical stage.




Islam calls that miserable historical period of Arab lifestyle 'Jahiliyah' because it is a word which represents ignorant beliefs, practices, rules, laws, customs, values and behavior of a perverse society.

DEFINITION OF JAHILIYYAH/ ‫ه‬

154. Kemudian setelah kamu berdukacita, Allah menurunkan kepada kamu keamanan (berupa) mengantuk yang meliputi segolongan dari pada kamu, sedang segolongan lagi Telah dicemaskan oleh diri mereka sendiri, mereka menyangka yang tidak benar terhadap Allah seperti sangkaan jahiliyah.

And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless . 33.

Al-Ahzab (33:33)

Dan hendaklah kamu tetap di rumahmu[1215] dan janganlah kamu berhias dan bertingkah laku seperti orang-orang Jahiliyah yang dahulu[1216] dan Dirikanlah shalat, tunaikanlah zakat dan taatilah Allah dan Rasul-Nya. Sesungguhnya Allah bermaksud hendak menghilangkan dosa dari kamu, Hai ahlul bait[1217] dan membersihkan kamu sebersihbersihnya.

[1215] Maksudnya: isteri-isteri Rasul agar tetap di rumah dan ke luar rumah bila ada keperluan yang dibenarkan oleh syara'. perintah Ini juga meliputi segenap mukminat. [1216] yang dimaksud Jahiliyah yang dahulu ialah Jahiliah kekafiran yang terdapat sebelum nabi Muhammad s.a.w. dan yang dimaksud Jahiliyah sekarang ialah Jahiliyah kemaksiatan, yang terjadi sesudah datangnya Islam. [1217] Ahlul bait di sini, yaitu keluarga rumah tangga Rasulullah s.a.w.

‫ن‬ َ ُ ِ!ُ ‫َْ ٍم‬$% ً'ُْ ِّ‫ ا‬ َ ِ ُ َ ْ‫ن َو َ ْ َأ‬ َ َُْ ِ ِِ‫َأَُْ َ اَْه‬ Do they then seek after a judgment of (the days of) ignorance? But who, for a people whose faith is assured, can give better judgement than Allah ? 50 : ‫*ة‬+'‫ا‬

50. Apakah hukum Jahiliyah yang mereka kehendaki, dan (hukum) siapakah yang lebih baik daripada (hukum) Allah bagi orang-orang yang yakin ?

Dia-lah yang mengutus kepada kaum yang buta huruf seorang Rasul di antara mereka, yang membacakan ayat-ayat-Nya kepada mereka, mensucikan mereka dan mengajarkan mereka Kitab dan hikmah (As Sunnah). dan Sesungguhnya mereka sebelumnya benar-benar dalam kesesatan yang nyata.
