An Endangered Species

EGYPTIAN VULTURE

In
any
country
where
the
Egyptian
Vulture
is
located,
they
are
illegal
to
hunt
and
kill.

Kingdom:

 Animalia Phylum:

Chordata
–
All
have
backbones. Class:

Aves
–
All
have
beaks. Order:

Falconiformes Family:

 Accipitridae Genus:

 Neophron Species:

 N.
percnopterus

They
have
no
sense
of
smell.
They
are
 the
smallest
vulture
in
Europe.
In
 2007
they
went
from
the
least
 concern
(LC)
category
of
 endangerment
to
endangered
(EN)
 category,
which
means
they
are
or
 were
dying
of
fast.

The
main
areas
where
they
are
found
is
in
the
 plains,
wetlands,
uplands,
and
mountains.
 They
are
sometimes
found
near
garbage
 dumps
(but
not
permanently). They
are
near
the
end
of
the
food
chain
 since
they
are
scavengers.
Scavengers
do
 not
hunt,
they
wait
for
something
to
die
or
 for
something
else
to
kill,
then
they
swoop
 in
and
take
the
rest.

Hawks,
Eagles,
and
other
Vultures
are
 closely
related. They
can
be
found
in
Southern
Europe,
the
 Middle
East,
India
and
all
of
Africa,
besides
 for
the
most
southern
parts.

They
are
scavengers,
their
day
usually
consists
of
Klying
around
the
area
of
 which
they
live
to
search
carrion,
or
carcasses
of
other
animals.
If
they
can
 even
barely
survive
the
winter,
then
they
do
not
need
to
migrate.

VICTIM

They
have
special
beaks
that
allow
them
 to
tear
raw
meat
and
Klesh
from
another
 animal’s
carcass.
They
can
also
pick
up
 stones
with
their
beaks,
which
allow
them
 to
drop
the
stones
on
eggs,
such
as
ostrich
 eggs,
and
crack
them
for
food. They
are
able
to
reproduce
at
the
age
of
 Kive.
Both
the
male
and
the
female
take
part
 in
the
construction
of
the
nest.
They
carry
 the
nesting
material
in
their
beaks,
unlike
 most
other
raptors,
who
use
their
talons.
 The
female
usually
lays
two
white
eggs
 with
dark
brown
spots
at
a
time.
They
have
 sexual
reproduction
which
means
they
 have
to
Kind
a
mate,
and
internal
 reproduction
which
means
that
the
male
 fertilizes
the
eggs
from
inside
the
female’s
 body. In
southern
Africa
they
are
completely
 extinct.
The
main
reason
for
this
is
a
type
of
 shaman
(Sangoma)
who
use
them
for
 rituals.
They
are
used
for
sacriKices
or
for
 medicine.
The
vulture
parts
are
consumed
 or
ground
into
medicine,
which
is
either
 smoked,
drunk,
inhaled,
smeared
on
the
 body,
given
as
an
enema
(
a
special
shot,
 which
is
taken
in
the
butt)
or
rubbed
into
an
 incision
(cut
purposely
made).
They
are
also
 poisoned
by
farmers
and
Kly
into
power
 lines.
