ECLIPSES(SOLAR ECLIPSE & LUNAR ECLIPSE) STUDENT’SNAME: GAGANDEEP KAUR,(7th A) SUMANDEEP KAUR,(7th A) VEER SINGH.(7th A)

ECLIPSE: An object comes in between a source of light and the screen , its shadow is formed on the screen. Sun is a source of light and heavenly bodies are continuously revolving around it. So these also cast their shadows in the space. It may also happen that the shadow of a heavenly body falls on the surface of another heavenly body . when an object moves in front of another it blocks its light. This formation of shadow cast by a heavenly body over the another is called an eclipse. The earth revolves around the sun and the moon revolves around the earth.Sun is the source of light but moon and earth are opaque objects. The moon and earth cast their shadows SOLAR ECLIPSE: When the moon comes in between the sun and the earth, the shadow of the moon forms on the earth resulting in the solar eclipse. As the moon moves around the earth, its position constantly changes with respect to the sun and the earth, so it will cast its shadow on the earth at different places at different times. Hence solar eclipse occurs when the moon,s shadow moves across the face of earth. The shadow usually moves from west to east across the earth. People on the earth in the path of shadow can view on of the three kinds of solar eclipse i. e. total solar eclipse, partial solar eclipse and annular solar eclipse. The type of solar eclipse that will be visible from a place on earth depends whether it lies in the shadow and subshadow region of the moon.

Some part of the earth is covered by shadow and no sun light reaches there. The moon completely blocks out the sun.It is the case of total solar eclipse. The other parts of the earth may be covered by subshadow where some part of light from the sun may reach. In this case partial solar eclipse occurs. A partial solar eclipse occurs if the moon blocks only a part of sunlight. Lunar eclipse : Lunar eclipse occurs when the earth comes between the sun and the moon and the shadow of the earth froms on the moon when the entire moon is blocked by the earth. It comtletely lies in the shadow region, a total lonar eclipse occurs. No sun light reaches the moon and it appears totally dark when viewed from earth. If a part of moon passes through the shadow of earth it lies in the penumbra region and receives light from some part of sun, a partial lunar eclipse occurs .

The lunar eclipse occurs on the full moon night, but it is not necessary that it will occur on every full moon night. It only occurs when all the three heavenly bodies i. e. sun, earth and moon come in a straight line.
