Route Time/frequency IVP Q 6 hr. PRN For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and /or solutions Dilute doses for prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy in 50 ml of D5W, 0.9% NaCl, D5/0.9% NaCl, D5/0.45% NaCl. Solution is clear and colorless. Stable for 7 days at room temperature following dilution. Y-Site Incompatibility: ♦acyclovir ♦allopurinol ♦aminophylline ♦amphotericin B ♦ amphotericin B cholesteryl sulfate ♦ampicillin ♦ampicillin/sulbactam ♦cefepime ♦cefoperazone ♦furosemide ♦ganciclovir ♦lorazepam ♦methylprednisolone sodium succinate ♦piperacillin ♦sargramostim ♦sodium bicarbonate

Prevention of nausea and vomiting Blocks the effects of serotonin at 5-HT3-receptor sites (selective antagonist) located in vagal nerve terminals and the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the CNS

Hypersensitivity

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically)

Lab value alterations caused by medicine

May be affected by drugs altering the activity of liver enzymes

Common side effects CNS: headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, weakness, GI: constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, increased liver enzymes, Neuro: extrapyramidal reactions May cause transient ↑ in serum bilirubin, AST, and ALT levels

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Advise patient to notify health care professional immediately if involuntary movement of eyes, face, or limbs occurs

Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess patient for nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, and bowel sounds prior to and following administration

Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? Assess patient for extrapyramidal effects (involuntary movements, facial grimacing, rigidity, shuffling walk, trembling of hands)

Evaluation Check after giving Prevention of nausea and vomiting
