Prison Uprise The Abolishment Movement

April 2006

Welcome Peace and Solidarity hope everyone is doing good, as good as can be expected. I did not do a March Issue, just did not have the time. I do this little newsletter myself, with the help of some typers, when needed occasionally. First, anyone who is not a member of The Abolishment Movement, and wishes to be, just send me a letter. We accept non-death row members now, and have a section for those. After all, some inmates are doing a natural life sentence, the other death sentence. Anyone wishing to help with this newsletter, or have their own monthly column, also let me know. Please pass this around, since I cannot send this to everyone. Eleven states have halted executions, and the way I see it, if it’s cruel and unusual in those states, why isn’t it cruel and unusual for the rest? We have to push this issue! Maybe if we posted something on every telephone post in Texas, and the other killing states, people would have to look and read. Any suggestions? My contact information for submissions, letters, etc. Dee Martin POBox 63095 New Bedford Ma. 02746

I

As some of you may already know, I freelance write for an online media magazine. I have been putting my prison stories, and

interviews on there, and getting much response. I recently did an interview with Roy Pippin executed by the state of Texas on March 29th, 2007. I got much response, and many calls to the Governor. I am planning on doing more, since it’s bringing much awareness to prison issues. If you want to be interviewed, please let me know. One of the pro death penalty sites online had the following post. this is the same site that features “Thug of the Month”, and had 2 people I like, Sarge and Rob Will on it, from Texas. She has a young girl as March’s “thug of the month”. The owners name is Pam, and I believe she may live in NY or Florida, not sure. These people are s pro as you can get, and “toast” when someone is executed, and laugh as well. This is what was posted: I have had this idea floating around for a while now and today I got Docs approval to take his brainchild and run with it so I bought the domain name: citizensforswiftjustice.org I am going to link it with this site and do a whole new section, much like the old cfsj but our letters are going to be respectful and request a dialogue with the inmates to discuss the whole thing, and I am going to post them all as they come in - no retyping them, I will scan all original letters. For those who are unaware, CFSJ wrote letters to inmates requesting they drop all their appeals and take their punishment. It was pretty much a circus with the Anti's who rejected this idea. I am going to maintain a friendly, respectful dialogue with the inmates and see where it goes. I hope to have this new section up and running by the end

2 The Abolishment Movement of this week. Of course I will type up and post for download a form letter for anyone else who would like to be involved.

Note: Please spread the word about this My interview with Roy Pippin, R.I.P. Roy I miss you already Interview With A Condemned Man Roy Pippin Has An Execution Date of March 29, 2007 Ok I will answer each question as briefly as I can but beware I ramble!

1.Roy, Please tell us how long you have been on death row, and what you are charged and convicted of. I was convicted of killing two Colombian men, the police said were cousins, on 9/15/95 – so 11 years on the row. There were other murders in the case they did not charge me with. In a nutshell – I was a front for a large Colombian cartel; they used my air conditioning shop, tshirts, vehicles and company name as their employer (for a cover). I let them use my a/c shop to unload truck loads of cocaine and they brought me the money to count, separate by denominations, package and load in vehicles to be transported into Mexico and New Colombia. I made some trips carrying the money. In Mid 1994 (April) two Colombians (deceased now) came to my home and demanded my signature on a form (my a/c company worksheet) saying I accepted XX amount of money. They had no money with them. They were trying to either set me up or just crew the big boss (Cuz). I said I would not do it. They immediately threatened to kill me and my family. I got them away from my house by laying – saying I would help – and called Cuz. He sent interrogators and hit men to “take care of the problem”. I allowed

April 2006 them to use my shop for interrogations and I rented hotel rooms “in my own name” (obviously I thought it would be resolved peacefully) for the five men to be “held against their will”. I testified to that but refused to give real names etc…so I’m here, I did NOT shoot or kill anyone but the state built their case saying I did and couldn’t back down once the ballistics evidence proved their eyewitness (NOT!) had lied, so they suborved perjured testimony and tried to hide that 2 guns were used (3 in all – other victims) to kill the Buitragos, their alleged eyewitness testified it was me – with one gun. (see I ramble – sorry)

2. Do you feel your representation was adequate? My legal representation was deplorable, they believed the prosecutions case so they never even looked for my multiple alibi witnesses – I was at a club with people doing coke and driving when the shootings occurred and they – therefore – could not re-group when the prosecutor was caught withholding the ballistics evidence that completely destroyed his case. My state habeas attorney was a total joke. He never answered a letter in over 4 years, refused to visit and refused to file actual innocence claims, oh he refused to hire an investigator and said he told it all on the phone. I got 3 federal habeas attorneys dismissed due to all of them being uncaring and incompetent, all stepped down to be a judge. One got dismissed under 28 USC 2261 (e) – look it up “ineffective and incompetent” and he is still doing DP appeals in Texas!!! 3. I understand you have been given an execution date of March 29th, 2007. Do you feel you will be given a stay of execution? I would say my odds are maybe 2% of a stay J better than zero but we will see. A Mexican lady wrote in 5/06 saying she knows I didn’t do this and knows who did. She was part of the drug group and fears for her life after being

3 The Abolishment Movement threatened. It may not be enough – in Texas. Also new proof they withheld ballistics evidence proving it was two guns – where my idiot expert couldn’t ascertain the true facts. 4. The Polunsky Unit in Texas where you are being housed has been called "The Texas Death Camp" by some, why is this? Polunsky cells are not bad – but 22+ hours a day in them is barbaric, the major problem is despotic new wardens and rank. Most guards are ok but like in any society, some are sadistic and feel they need to make us miserable every day. 5. Please tell us about the conditions at Polunsky Unit. Bullying; we have to follow rules but guards can do whatever they want with impunity, intimidation tactics by rank, cold food ( like I care now J) the rudeness to loved ones is unacceptable, messing with our mail etc done with impunity and if a female guard says you masturbate or talk dirty you are automatically found guilty. Grievance systems is a total joke – I've won 2 out of 100’s, kept dirty “unless visitors – zoo watchers are coming”

6. Do you feel the prison staff is well trained, and act as compassionate, human beings? Trick question right? Well trained? Most can't brush their teeth by themselves. No they are far from being well trained.. 7.Are you being supported by friends and family at this time?

April 2006 You won't like this – even though I was wrongfully convicted and “remarkably” sentenced to death (no other convictions, abuse charges etc…in my life, not DUI”S etc) I still believe some crimes deserve a death sentence, if someone raped and murdered my daughter, (nowadays) son, mother, sister, lifelong friend etc I would want them to pay the ultimate price. But since my case I've said “confessed felons, DNA proving it” multiple witnesses and/or weapon proving the crime etc….should result in a conviction and the D.P, I've asked many antiDP or abolition group members what they would want if one of their loved ones died a horrendous death. You would be surprised at the percentage that rethink their position. 9. What about the victims in the crime you were convicted of, what about their friends and family? Is there anything you wish to say about this? The Colombian victims in my case were drug dealers and murderers. They knew that on any given day, as I did, that they would be put in prison or die. Their family and friends knew it too. I pity any fatherless children from this case – but they did not die by my hand AND they would have killed my family, so the jurors never saw remorse or sorrow for the victims from me, why should I show those emotions? If it wasn’t them – it would be me and my family, but I made a phone call, not fired a gun. I guess I would say: “Sorry you ended up with the type of parents you did and lived with the fear they would die due to their illegal activities all those years. I wish you a peaceful life and stay out of their business because it ends in death or prison”.

Yes I am blessed to have loving friends and family who support me emotionally, financially and spiritually.

10. What is it like to count down the days to your execution?

8. What are your general thoughts about Capital Punishment, and what should the public know?

My execution will be an escape from this man made hell on earth. It will be a release. I know

4 The Abolishment Movement without a doubt that this earthly existence is not all there is for me/us. I look forward, especially so to being in paradise – so the days don’t mean much. It's watching the nervous “unbelievers” that is troubling. 11. How are inmates treated on death watch? Death watch use to be ok – until warden Hirsch changed all the rules. 4 guys are being kept on level 2 where they have limited rec, visits, no commissary, no radio or hot pot etc NO special visits, why??? They refuse to cute their hair or got caught drinking wine or smoking weed, so abuse them the last days of their lives! That’s punk_ _ _ Hirsch! Sleep deprivation is a huge problem, we can only rec in “A” section. Do the math – 12+ guys times 2 hours (if all level one) equals 24 hours a day of door and gate slamming, yelling out orders, cell searches, guards trying to deny rec or showers “because it's too late”, and no time to sleep!! Major Nelson helps some but not others to change visitation visits, get level one back etc 12. There was a recent suicide of one of the inmates on death watch, how does something like this happen?

April 2006 murders in this case, but for helping the Colombians bring in their poison to ruin lives and destroy families. I know I'm forgiven for my sins but I still live with the pain that my greed for money, a thrill, getting high, unlimited sex etc has caused. I sincerely ask all of you who overcame addiction and survived it intact will forgive me for my sins. 14. How can The Abolishment Movement, or general public help you? Help stop the madness, $500 billion in Iraq and “the drug war” kills more people and destroys more lives than 911 or Iraq each month. I don’t know the way to stop it but I hope people will learn from my murder, it actually only takes once of using a drug to ruin your life. I became extremely addicted after one night of cocaine, drinking and the free flowing sex of women who did it with me, it was the beginning of the end. So, in conclusion (thank God huh!) I think focusing on stopping “ the thing that lands a good 80% of the prisoners here” drugs would be a huge step to ending the D.P and lower the murder rate to what is was decades ago “before the invasion of cheap drugs”.

13. At this time, if there is something you would like to say, please do so.

Let me guess – sorry you asked huh? I cannot seem to be succinct in anything. It's a built in flaw. I do love mail so “wad me up” if you can these last 24, oops, it’s 12.10am so 23 days see – I usually don’t watch the days, It's only when I write letters that I'm reminded of how much time I have left. FYI – IF my pre se work got any action at all it would make court approved attorneys look like idiots, so, I have a higher hurdle then most, BUT I'm good at what I do so it's always possible.

To young kids, teenagers and all adults – any race, religion, or sexual preference – stay away from drugs. Life is a gift and abusing yourself “for a short high” is so stupid it is unconscionable that so many people do it, in my heart I know I am going to die – not for the

Tarot cards and astrology, I like you!!! I love near death experience reports, communications with “the other side” anything on ancient Egypt and the Pyramids etc. There is a new life once we leave these earthly vessels behind. I know – I've talked with my friend Terry almost 40 years. He

I got here weeks after the suicide by Michael Johnson. Anyone can commit suicide – even with a guard sitting in a chair in front of the cell. Their procedures make them have to “suit up” to come into the cells, 15-20 minutes, you can bleed out or die of strangulation from hanging, not my thing!

5 The Abolishment Movement died of bone cancer in 1967. HE saved me from dying several times, it's real Dee guaranteed! Like in “ghost” (Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze & Whoopie Goldberg) – you take the love with you, I know it. Hope you do too. I hope to hear back, have a wonderful, happy and productive life, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Peace, Love and Respects, Roy God Bless This interview generated over 3000 page views in just a few days. I also want to add that in my letters from Roy, he always expressed concern for the inmates around him. He was always more worried about them than he was of dying. The pro site I spoke about dogged him badly!

never been the problem. How can a starving and economically deprived people be the root of any problem?

Thanks Randy, Keep them coming!

The problem is with those who exploit, those who spread racist propaganda. The problem are the kapitalists who think of no one but themselves. We have to stand outside the lying hype vomited to us by their news media and the sell-out politicians -- Democrats and Republicans, alike.

Letter Of Rage with permission

Letter of Rage By Ali Khalid Abdullah, Prisonersolidarity.org March 16, 2007 < 1. " target=_blankhttp://www.prisonersolidarity.o rg/AliKhalidAbdullah5.htm> This is a letter of rage. It is well past the time that we opened our eyes, that we stopped being bullshitted, brainwashed, and placed in a sociopolitical cage, and learned to take back our power. I refer to the power we relinquished to the political structure in order to become a so-called "developed nation," while other brothers and sisters in these so-called "third world" live and die off of the crumbs that kapitalist/imperialist nations throw off of their tables. The time is over for Black and White hate. We must stand together and realize that we are being played - played by monopolizers who want us to hate one another, and to fight and kill one another, while they exploit us and our labor and potential. The time is done for allowing the enemy to dictate to us who our brothers and sisters are. All this propaganda pushed upon us about the immigrant taking our jobs and bringing down the Amerikan dream is a lie. A big fat racist lie. Our immigrant brothers and sisters aren't bringing down nothing. They were long ago brought down by the white power superstructure that has used and exploited them and their land to make profit and gain power over the rest of us. The truth is that our immigrant brothers and sisters have

Start looking outside of Amerikkka. Start learning about Afrika, Asia, Latin Amerika, the former Soviet Republic and throughout the Middle East, and see who is suffering. See who is being deprived. See who is being seriously exploited, dying of thirst, hunger and disease. Learn about what is really going on before making biased comments about other people. Look, this letter isn't written to sugarcoat or play, in some politically correct language. I'm trying to blast you with some real shit. I'm trying to inspire you to check out some things, and if I have to use profanity in order for you to stop in your tracks and look at what's happening, so be it. We need to build a controlled and organized rage for resistance, to the status quo. is everything that we have made at the cost of someone else's suffering to provide it? Do you think that your cell phone was made without others' suffering? All cell phones, computers and anything that has a chip comes from a substance found in a particular mud in Afrika. It’s called Coltan (the colloquial Afrikan name for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is the driving force for us to have cheap access to these products. Look at the bling-bling (ala jewellery) so many people have, or seek. The people who slave their lives away to get these diamonds and gold can't even feed themselves. Why not?: Because of greed, political manipulation and media savvy. I call upon all of you who say that you're tired of

7 The Abolishment Movement exploitation, racism, homophobia, sexism, and ageism. You're tired of being treated as workerslaves. You're ready to feel the rage! To feel the hot-blood rush through you and raise your emotions, to jump up and FIGHT THE POWER STRUCTURE!

Ali Khalid Abdullah #148130 Muskegon Corr. Fac. 2400 S. Sheridan Rd. Muskegon, MI Ali Khalid Abdullah has been incarcerated since 1990 for taking action against a known drug dealer for the sexual molestation of an 11-yearold girl, because her mother owed a crack debt. Abdullah was ambushed, shot in the chest, and left for dead as a result of street information circulating that he was going to deal with the perpetrators. After recovering from the hospital, he sought to attack several businesses the drug dealer owned as fronts for selling drugs. Abdullah and friends confronted the employees, and discovered that they did not know what was going on. They left without taking any money, or causing any harm. But Abdullah was arrested and sentenced to 6 ½-20 years for "Assault with Intent to Rob While Armed." He has been denied parole since 1996, and discharges in July 2008.

Jessup Prison Closed down, Inmates Moved, some to Kentucky I heard Problem prison to close today House of Correction ends 128-year run By Chris Emery sun reporter Originally published March 19, 2007 The Maryland House of Correction in Jessup will be officially shuttered today, a move that is long overdue, according to those familiar with the decrepit and dangerous 128-year- old maximumsecurity prison.

April 2006 The prison was expected to be cleared of inmates by 10:15 a.m., when Gov. Martin O'Malley plans to announce the closure at a news conference at the facility, according to an O'Malley spokesman. The sudden shutdown, spurred by the stabbing of a guard March 2, wound down over the weekend as the last few dozen inmates were moved to other state and federal prisons, according to prison officials. The prison's hospital, which sees patients from other Jessup correctional facilities, will remain open, but most of the officers will be reassigned to other facilities, officials said. The closure came as welcome news to William W. Sondervan, who ran Maryland's prisons from 1999 to 2003. "It's old, it's obsolete and it's dangerous," Sondervan said of the House of Correction, where a correctional officer and three inmates were stabbed to death last year. "We wanted to close it going back a while," Sondervan said. "But there was nowhere else to put the inmates." He said inmate violence at the prison has become markedly worse in recent years. "Things kind of fell apart," Sondervan said. The stabbing of a guard earlier this month was the final straw for Gary D. Maynard, who took over in January as Maryland's secretary of public safety and correctional services. The officer, Edouardo F. Edouazin, 28, was returning an inmate to his cell when another inmate stabbed him with a homemade knife. Maynard scrapped plans to convert the sprawling prison into a minimum-security facility and submitted a plan to O'Malley for shutting it down.

8 The Abolishment Movement

April 2006 closure would be completed today.

Over the past two weeks, inmates were transported in vans and buses to other prisons, according to prison officials. They said most inmates were sent to other facilities in Maryland, but 97 of the "most disruptive" were sent to federal prisons across the country or state prisons in Kentucky and Virginia. Prison officials said efforts were made to notify the inmates' families of the closure. "They have either been notified or the notice is on the way," said Mark Vernarelli, a Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman. Kimberly Haven, executive director of Justice Maryland, an inmate advocacy group, said she was concerned that moving prisoners would disrupt family communication and visits. "I suspect we will hear from family members this week," she said. "People will call us to find out if we know where their father or brother or son is." Barbara Bell of Lakeland, Fla., said she believes the closing of the prison led to her son being moved from Maryland's Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. She said her son called her Friday and said he had been transferred to a federal prison in Massachusetts. "He didn't know he was going to be moved," Bell said. "We don't know if it's permanent or if it's temporary." She said her son was sentenced to 20 years for sexual assault. She asked that his name be withheld to ensure his safety. Vernarelli said he could not confirm yesterday why Bell's son had been moved but added that it is not uncommon for an inmate to be moved to another prison. "It seems like a coincidence, but it could have been completely unrelated," he said. Union officials welcomed news that the prison's

"I worked there myself from '79 to '88, and the place was antiquated then," said Bernard W. Ralph Jr., president of the Jessup chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "It's really unfortunate that it took what it did to get this place closed - the death of a correctional officer and numerous assaults," he said. "We've complained for years about lack of training and staffing." Prison officials have assured him, Ralph said, that officers working at the House of Correction will be reassigned to local facilities near Jessup. Not everyone, however, had bad memories of the 128-year- old facility. Mary C. Hipkins, 85, of Frederick visited the prison grounds in the 1930s, when her mother's cousin, Thomas Rudkin, was the superintendent. She was about 10 years old at the time. She would play outside the prison and tour the inside with Rudkin. "He would take us everywhere we had to go inside," she recalled. "But we were always locked in." She remembers a prison in good repair. "The prisoners raised all of their vegetables in a big garden," she said. "It seemed like a very nice building, but that was a long time ago."

Gov. Perry signs deadly force bill (does this seem ironic to you?) Comments welcomed on this one. Governor signs deadly force bill By KELLEY SHANNON, Associated Press AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry signed into law today a bill that gives Texans a

9 The Abolishment Movement stronger legal right to defend themselves with deadly force in their homes, cars and workplaces. Both chambers of the Legislature overwhelmingly approved the measure earlier this month. The bill, backed by the National Rifle Association, states that a person has no duty to retreat from an intruder before using deadly force. "The right to defend oneself from an imminent act of harm should not only be clearly defined in Texas law, but it is intuitive to human nature. You ought to be able to protect yourself," Perry said, surrounded by lawmakers who pushed for the law. This is the first bill-signing this legislative session by the Republican governor. The law takes effect Sept. 1.

April 2006 law that in some cases requires a person to retreat from an intruder. The new law will also provide civil immunity for a person who lawfully uses deadly force in any of the circumstances spelled out in the bill. Police and prosecutors can still press charges if they feel deadly force was illegally used, legislative sponsors said. The "castle doctrine" bill is SB 378. Source : Associated Press

I suspect Andy Kahon on this one and have asked him to do an interview with me. He agreed. I sent the questions but have not heard back from him since.

"This is reasonable legislation," Perry said. The building or vehicle must be occupied at the time for the deadly force provision to apply, and the person using force cannot provoke the attacker or be involved in criminal activity at the time. Some refer to the measure as the "castle doctrine," drawing from the idea that a man's home is his castle and that he should have the right to defend it. Fifteen other states have passed similar laws. Texas is the first state to pass such a law this year, said Rep. Joe Driver, a Garland Republican who sponsored the measure. Sen. Jeff Wentworth, a San Antonio Republican who pressed the issue in his chamber, said the law changes previous Texas

11 The Abolishment Movement The Prison Show Friday nights Ray said the transmitter was stronger, or something like that and that some Polunsky inmates can now hear the show: Taken from Ray’s website:

Ray Hill's The Prison Show has been broadcast on Houston Pacifica radio station KPFT, 90.1 FM weekly since March 1980. You can tune in on Friday nights at 9 p.m. cst During the first hour of the program, Ray and the gang, and occasionally a special guest, discuss related current issues and review the weeks mailbag. In the second hour, we receive calls from the listeners that make the show so special, as they connect to talk to their family members, friends and loved ones within the Texas prisons, and somehow form together to become one large family through their common experience. Texas does not permit inmates to have access to telephones or the web. So for many, The Prison Show is the only way an inmate can hear the voice of his friends and relatives between the rare visits. We begin accepting long distance calls at 9:20 p.m. and local calls at 10 p.m. The number to call is 713-526-5738 As Ray frequently says,"Business is good"
