Project 44: Aim: To determine alkalinity of different brands of antacid tablets. Introduction: Different antacid tablets have variable composition. Here our aim is to see the effectiveness of the tablet to neutralise the acid in the stomach. Requirements a. Beakers, Burette, Pipette, Conical flasks 8 to 10 depending on number of tablets, white tile etc., b. Standard solution of HCl, oxalic acid and NaOH (0.1 N), Phenolphthalein, etc., Procedure 1. Weigh 500 mg. of each of tablets. 2. Put the tablets in 50 ml. of 0.1 N HCl solution taken in a conical flask. 3. Keep the content overnight. 4. Titrate against 0.1 N NaOH solution 5. Take four readings for each tablet.

Initial Final Difference
Volume of 0.1 HCl, neutralized by 500 mg. of tablet = (50-x) ml. Similarly note that observation for other tablets. Inference: Determine the alkalinity of different tablets in terms of ml. of 0.1 N HCl.
