Motivation to start an RAC implementation MOTIVATION 1: Higher availability • New requirements on the availability of the SAP R/3 Servers • Negotiation of maintenance windows is becoming difficult • An increasing number of workplaces rely on SAP R/3 MOTIVATION 2: Improved Agility • Dynamical growth by adding more servers • Better reuse of equipment (mergers and consolidation)

MOTIVATION 3: Cost savings • Buy commodity servers due to a scale out approach • REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS BY ELIMINATING SPOFs

Conclusion • Oracle Real Application Clusters ? Oracle Parallel Server !!!! • RAC perfectly fits into our SAP R/3 datacenter strategy • Cluster Filesystem is key for smoothless operation of RAC with SAP • No adjustments in the SAP Application are needed for RAC. • A cluster and a SAN is a good basis for an RAC implementation • RAC is the enabling technology for a scale out approach with SAP R/3

• Oracle Real Application Clusters saves expenses (REAL $$$) • Licensing and Availability of RAC for SAP R/3 needs to be specified • Migration to Oracle RAC is easy. No DB unload and DB load !
