Diabetes Update
March 2008
Education & Research for Long, Healthy Lives
Inpatient Education in Area Hospitals In response to the rising number of people with diabetes and the new JACHO guidelines for diabetes care in the hospital setting, Humphreys has increased inpatient diabetes education at four local hospitals—Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Intermountain Hospital and both locations of St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center. You can make a referral for inpatient diabetes education regardless of whether the patient was newly diagnosed while in the hospital or has had diabetes for years. Improved blood glucose control not only improves postoperative outcomes, but lays the groundwork for effective diabetes self-management. HDC nurse educators are available Monday through Friday. We recommend a 24-hour notice to schedule the patient and we strongly encourage arranging a consult before the day of discharge in the event follow-up consults are necessary. Because hospitalization is not the optimal learning time, the goal of inpatient diabetes education is to teach basic diabetes survival skills including: • Brief overview of the diabetes disease process • Blood glucose monitoring • Action and potential side effects of medications • Insulin administration with syringe and vial or insulin pen, as needed • Signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment of hypo/hyperglycemia • Sick day guidelines • Providing simple, written guidelines and/or daily schedules Acutely ill patients, especially the elderly, require one-onone education with opportunity for repetition of newly learned tasks. Family is often involved in the education as well. Follow-up visits at HDC are encouraged to reinforce and expand the education provided in the hospital. Continuing
education often is provided in the Self-Management class and / or Intensive Insulin class. Inpatient referral forms are available to download at www.hdiabetescenter.org and can be faxed to the appropriate

HDC Patient Profile
Kristin Repaci Kristin Repaci was one of the diabetes center’s early participants in research. Her markers for the disease were identified three years before she was officially diagnosed at age 10, giving her a head start on learning about the disease. Her mother Lynette Repaci, a pharmacist and diabetes educator, taught her daughter how to manage it. Kristen now helps teach other kids and families about the disease, through her volunteer work at Humphrey’s TrailNet research program and at Sweet Kids Day Camp each summer. Kristen likes to read, travel, hang out with her friends and play with her shih-tzu Sophie (pictured with her here). She is competitive swimmer for her high school team. Her message to other kids with diabetes, “You can still do anything. Just take care of your diabetes and you’re just like everybody else.”
