designer handbook
welcome
Whether you’re a returning designer or just starting, welcome to Blue & White. I hope you’re as excited as I am to make this semester the best b&w has ever had! Last semester brought a lot of good changes, and I want us to keep improving. To me, improvement is more than just looking better. It’s new marketing ideas, creative stories and angles, and innovative designs.
The wonderful thing about being a b&w designer is that you’re not limited to designing. You’re welcome and encouraged to contribute story ideas — and even write them — as well as suggest ways to enhance our reputation and revenue, and increase our readership. Our goal is to make Blue & White the best campus magazine out there. We need your help and ideas to accomplish that, so don’t be afraid to speak up and speak out! We’re listening.
meet the art director My name is Kelly Giles and I’m a junior psychology and public relations (previously graphic design) major from WinstonSalem. I’ve been with b&w since my freshman year.
getting started
Where do you have to go and how do you access b&w files? Carroll Hall and access the server!
Log in to the computer. User name: bluewhite Password: curry
Log in the server, Howell. Click the Howell icon (@ sign) in the tool bar. Then click “Student Publications” and click OK.
Load the b&w fonts. Open the Blue & White folder: Student Publications >> Blue & White. Drag *bwfonts into the lower window of Font Book. Open the InDesign document containing your file. Student Publications >> Blue & White >> MONTH07 >> Story Folder >> Story.indd
Lab Hours • Labs 58 and 59, in the basement of Carroll Hall • Sunday-Thursday 5:30-9:30 • Friday 9am-5pm Open Font Book under Applications.
• not open on Saturday • if you have a Mac computer, you can access the server from home. Ask me for details.
Chcek out the difference between the old b&w layouts (black stroke) and the new b&w style (pink stroke). All of the old layouts appeared in the same issue!
my vision for b&w
Bet you think you already read this, don’t you? I used the word ‘vision’ because I want to talk about how I see b&w’s style. When I arrived on staff, designs were ecclectic to say the least. Every feature spread looked completely different from every other. Diversity is good, but each page of a magazine is only part of the whole. The pages should blend together to create a holistic image. I want Blue & White’s image to be simple and classy, but not stuffy. I want it to look like a professional magazine designed by students who take industry trends and make them their own. When I became Art Director, I worked to redesign the magazine with those goals in mind. I took ideas from some of my favorite magazines, like O Magazine, InStyle and Yoga Journal, and I encourage you to do the same in your designs. Infuse each design with your personal style, but use the guidelines that follow to make sure it blends seamlessly into the b&w style.
We’re consistent with our headline designs. The size and color can change, but the typeface must be Baskerville Old Face or Jayne Print or a combination. You’re also free to design a graphic or use a picture in your headline.
The opening blurb is a teaser about the story. You’re not responsible for writing it.

This is our ‘drop cap’. It’s the first letter of the first setence. Just click in the textbox that houses the letter and change it to match your copy. It can be any shade or transparency of the spot color, or gray.

Copy text is always Adobe Garamond Pro, size 9.5, leading 11.4. (Don’t worry, the template will already be set up like this -- all you have to do is copy and paste the text into the InDesign document.) Don’t worry about page numbers. They’re housed on the master pages.

Cropping Images:
• All images must be cropped and grayscaled. Sound scary? It’s not. You just need PhotoShop. • First, how big does the picture need to be? • Unless you know you want the picture to be huge (take up a page or a spread), 7x5 is a good size. If it needs to be bigger, make it bigger.
1. Drag your photo(s) into PhotoShop. 2. Click Image>>Image Size 3. Type in a reasonable size for width and heigth -- whatever seems like it will fit the space 4. Type 300 for DPI -- this is VERY important! 5. Click OK.

To make an image bleed, you must drag it off the edge of the page (represented by the pink line around the page). This image isn’t bleeding.
