The Birth of a New Fish Club in Houston! Tim Bell (GHAC Vice-President)

Two years ago, in the garage of an avid fish-fanatic, the roots of a new fish club were laid. Fish enthusiasts from the Kingwood/Humble/Huffman area gathered once a month with one vision in mind: to enjoy fish. Through interaction on the HoustonFishBox, it was determined that the entire Greater Houston area would benefit from such a club. And thus it came to be. On the balmy evening of October 17th 2007, the GHAC held its first official meeting. Individuals, couples, and families from all over the city met at Mike’s Tropical Fish and Pets. In addition to hours of socializing, a raffle was held to help raise money for fees associated with starting up a legitimate not for profit organization. Membership fees to join the club were set at $5 for adult membership and $3 for junior members. A total of $218 was raised during the first meeting.

On October 19th, the club held its second meeting at Mike’s Tropical Fish and Pets. Upwards of 25 people were present to prove that the new club was not going to fizzle out. All of the members (the author included) seemed very excited about where this new club would lead us. Another small raffle was held to raise additional funds for the club. Several new officers to the GHAC were announced. The possibilities of upcoming events were brought up, and will be spearheaded by the newlyappointed activity director, Steve LaForce. Anyone with ideas as to possible future events is strongly encouraged to contact Steve or any GHAC officer. Some suggestions were: a bayou fishing expedition, group trip to various local fish stores, a tank tour of member’s homes, a progressive dinner, and the possibility of a Christmas Party. Fortunately, a Christmas Party was already in the works. See page two for details. Geoff Qualls, the President of the Houston Tropheus and Petrochromis Club was on hand and invited all GHAC members to the Texas Holey Rock Dig that will take place on December 15th. For more information about the Rock Dig, click here. Geoff also detailed information pertaining to a group order to obtain wild-caught cichlids from the Zambian coast of Lake Tanganyika. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many hobbyists to get their dream fish imported directly from the Lake without a huge markup from the middleman.

It’s About Time for a Christmas Party …and it wouldn’t be the same without you! The GHAC is going to have its third meeting at the home of GHAC members Roy and Heidi Flis. This will also serve as the scene of the Christmas Party. Roy and Heidi have been generous to provide the entire main course...Turkey, Ham, and Brisket. GHAC Members are asked to bring side dishes and/or drinks. Roy and Heidi have a heated outdoor pool that will be ready for the party, so bring your swimsuit! In addition, there will be a White Elephant Gift Exchange, with a ten dollar limit on a fish-related item. Here are the details for the party:

My wife, Belinda, is the one that was first interested in fish about 13 years ago. I didn’t care for the hobby so much at first. I think it might have been the type of fish she tried at first that may have been the reason. Belinda was still a novice so she stuck with inexpensive community fish at first because sooner or later they would die. Oh, to think back at all the mistakes we made. Well, it wasn’t too long till I absorbed some knowledge and could name different types of fish by sight. We started with goldfish then tetras and then South American Cichlids. My wife and I really had fun working together and often fussed about what fish to get next. We only had two tanks - the largest being a 55 gallon. Things changed a bit in 2002. My wife, Belinda, while pregnant with my 3rd son became ill with Thyroid Cancer. She spent the next three years fighting and so far so good! This, along with other health issues, has limited what she can do, so I took care of the fish most of the time. Although we still fuss about which ones we will get next. At one point I had 37 tanks, but that has been reduced to a more manageable number. I liked African Peacocks and had converted almost exclusively to them and away from South Americans. Currently I find myself addicted to Tangs and soon plan to have almost all Tangs in my 17 tanks. My prize fish right now are my Tropheus Livua colony. I found a home away from home meeting with some really great people who were just as crazy about the hobby as we were, if not more. We met in a garage that was simply a fish keepers dream. Now with GHAC, I found more crazy people than I thought possible. I serve as President and as a friend. I promise to work had to help GHAC be the club you all want it to be and more.

Keep in mind that this is our first issue. We want to hear from you. After all, you are the reason we are here. Email any suggestions, comments, or questions to [email protected].

What is the GHAC? The GHAC is a not for profit organization that seeks to bring together individuals from all over the Greater Houston area. We are interested in anything related to fish – be it aquarium maintenance, equipment, decorations and environments, aquatic plants, compatibility issues, or breeding.
