End of an era, as Lambda Rising to close Owner Maccubbin says ‘mission accomplished’ By LOU CHIBBARO JR. [email protected] Lambda Rising, a bookstore serving the LGBT community in the nation’s capital for 35 years, is closing its D.C. store in Dupont Circle and its remaining out-of-town store in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in January. The closings, announced last week, become another in a series of gay bookstores that have shut down in recent years in other cities, including New York and Baltimore. Deacon Maccubbin, 66, the store’s founder and co-owner, told D.C. Agenda in an exclusive interview that he plans to retire soon and that he and co-owner Jim Bennett, his domestic partner of 32 years,

decided they would rather close the stores than sell them to a new owner who might change their focus and mission. “The phrase ‘mission accomplished’ has gotten a bad rap in recent years but in this case, it certainly applies,” Maccubbin said. “When we set out to establish Lambda Rising in 1974, it was intended as a demonstration of the demand for gay and lesbian literature,” he said, noting that few if any mainstream bookstores and newsstands carried gay-related books and periodicals at the time. “Today, 35 years later, nearly every general bookstore carries GLBT books, often featuring them in special sections,” he said. Maccubbin said the Internet also enables people today to access LGBT-related information from almost any location in the country, accomplishing yet another part of

Lambda Rising’s mission: to provide up-to-date information to a community that could not obtain it elsewhere. He said he first opened the store in June 1974 in a converted townhouse on 20th Street, N.W., near Dupont Circle, with an initial investment of $3,000 and an additional $1,000 borrowed from a local gay activist. The shop consisted of 300 square feet of space and just 250 gay and lesbian book titles. “That’s all there were at the time,” Maccubbin said. The store, along with the LGBT community and gay civil rights movement, grew dramatically over the next three decades, moving in 1977 to a larger storefront space on S Street, N.W., a few blocks away. In 1984, the store moved to its current location at 1625 Connecticut Ave., N.W., in a storefront building that Maccubbin and Bennett own.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in an interview with DC Agenda that lawmakers will work on passing other pro-LGBT bills next year, and could take up legislation to repeal DOMA

— known as the Respect for Marriage Act — at the end of the twoyear session starting in 2011. “The Respect for Marriage Act is a bill that we can’t pass right now; we know we can’t pass it right now,” he said. Nadler said Congress won’t take up the DOMA repeal next year because other LGBT-related bills, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, legislation providing partner benefits for LGBT federal workers and a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” are taking precedence. Supporters hope to pass those measures by the end of 2010. “The Respect for Marriage Act comes up after that, maybe at the end of the next Congress, maybe afterward,” he said.

Trans woman charged Fenty pledges to meet with in carjacking of AIDS activists after sit-in arrests U.S. senator’s daughter

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has agreed to meet with representatives of an AIDS group coalition that staged a sit-in outside his office Dec. 1 as part of a World AIDS Day protest. Two people with the group D.C. Fights Back were arrested during the sit-in after they refused to obey a police order to stop blocking an entrance in the John A. Wilson city hall building. Christine Campbell, vice president for national advocacy at Housing Works, which pushes for subsidized housing programs for low-income people with HIV/AIDS, said her group joined the protest because the city has failed to reduce a three-year waiting list for AIDSrelated housing in the District. She said repeated meetings with officials at the city’s Department of Health and the mayor’s office resulted in “nothing happening,” prompting the groups to stage the sit-in to demand a meeting with the mayor. “The system has to be fixed if we’re actually going to have better health outcomes here in the District,”

she said. “We knew a woman who was [number] 382 on the waiting list and she called to get an update on where she was,” Campbell said. “They said, ‘We’re not giving numbers anymore.’ They’ll tell someone who applies for housing now that there are about this many people on the list and you’ll have to wait about three to five years.” Dena Iverson, a spokesperson for the Department of Health, said her office was “continuing its efforts to maximize funding for housing assistance and [will] work with those waiting for housing to help them access services or other potential routes to stable housing situations.” Michael Kharen, a spokesperson for the city’s AIDS office, said the waiting list for a federally funded AIDS housing program stands at about 500 names. He said there are other housing assistance programs for people with AIDS in addition to the federally funded one, and the city is taking steps to place people in need into those programs. A transgender woman awaiting possible placement in a court-ordered counseling program was one of two people charged last week with allegedly carjacking a vehicle a U.S. senator’s daughter was driving in D.C. Prince George’s County police arrested two suspects at a Taco Bell restaurant in Seat Pleasant, Md., about an hour after they allegedly pulled U.S. Sen. Bob Corker’s daughter Julia Corker, 22, from her Chevrolet Tahoe while she was stopped at a red light at Seventh and D streets, N.W., police said. The two reportedly drove away in the vehicle and later parked it outside the Taco Bell, which is located near a police station. The transgender woman, who according to D.C. court records uses the name Gabrielle, was identified by police by her legal name, DeWalden Connor, 22, of Capitol Heights, Md. The other suspect was identified as Steven Alston, 25, of Northeast D.C. Both suspects were held this week in Prince George’s County on $75,000 bond pending their extradition to D.C. Records in D.C. Superior Court show that at the time of her arrest, Connor was awaiting placement in a special diversion program following an Oct. 21 arrest in D.C. on a charge of sexual solicitation. The records show the diversion program is operated by Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive, which is based in Adams Morgan. HIPS Executive Director Cyndee Clay said privacy rules prevented her from disclosing the names of participants in the program. She said the court and the U.S. Attorney’s office have retained HIPS to operate the program, which provides counseling and skills training for trans women arrested on prostitution related charges. Diversion programs call for the dropping of firstoffense charges against enrollees if they successfully complete the program. Court records show that Superior Court Judge Kaye Christian was scheduled to rule Dec. 17 on whether Connor should be accepted into the HIPS program. It could not immediately be determined if the carjacking arrest would adversely affect her chances of being accepted in the program. According to an account released by the senator’s office, D.C. police, Capitol Hill police, the FBI, and Prince George’s County police responded within minutes of Julie Corker’s report of the carjacking. The law enforcement agencies arranged for the tracking of the vehicle through its OnStar anti-theft, global positioning device, police said, which resulted in county police finding the car. Police charged Connor and Alston with unauthorized use of a vehicle and theft of over $500. The two could be charged with additional offenses upon extradition to D.C. LOU CHIBBARO JR.

Gay group to co-sponsor conservative convention

D.C. marriage equality rally set for Dec. 14 A rally in support of the D.C. same-sex marriage bill is scheduled to take place Dec. 14 at a city recreation center — the night before the City Council holds its second and final vote on the Religious Freedom & Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009. The rally, set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Kennedy Recreation Center at 1401 Seventh St., N.W., is being hosted by the same-sex marriage advocacy group Campaign for All D.C. Families, D.C. Clergy United for Marriage Equality, and the Human Rights Campaign. Representatives

of other groups and members of the City Council who back the marriage bill also are expected to participate. Meanwhile, in anticipation of the Council’s expected approval of the bill, Ward 5 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Robert King announced this week that he’s sent letters to every member of Congress calling on the federal lawmakers to block or overturn the D.C. same-sex marriage measure. Like all D.C. bills, the marriage measure must undergo a congressional review of 30 legislative days. The review is expected to begin later this month after the Council

passes the measure and Mayor Adrian Fenty signs the bill, as he has promised, and the bill is sent to Capitol Hill. Both Democratic and Republican observers on Capitol Hill have agreed that the Democratic-controlled Congress is expected to block attempts by same-sex marriage opponents to overturn the bill. Democrats have said D.C.’s local, home-rule government should be allowed to pass its own laws unhampered by Congress, even if some members of Congress don’t agree with a particular law. A gay conservative group will co-sponsor a prominent national conservative convention next year and could have a speaking role at the engagement. Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of GOProud, told DC Agenda on Tuesday that his group will be among those sponsoring the Conservative Political Action Conference, which is set to take place in D.C. in February. “It’s the most important annual gathering of conservatives in the country,” he said. “And it’s important for gay people and gay conservatives to have a voice at that conference. And we’re glad to be there and to provide that representation.” LaSalvia said his group contributed $4,000 — the minimum amount needed — to co-sponsor the conference. He said it’s unclear at this point whether GOProud’s sponsorship means one of its members will speak at the event, but noted that information should emerge in the coming weeks. A spokesperson for CPAC didn’t immediately respond to DC Agenda’s request for comment. It’s not the first time a gay group has been among the sponsors for CPAC. In 2005, the Log Cabin Republicans was among the co-sponsors. Patrick Guerriero, then-president of Log Cabin, and Chris Barron, now GOProud’s board chair but then Log Cabin’s political director, represented the organization at the event, according to ABC News. At the time, ABC News reported that the American Conservative Union, which coordinates CPAC, wanted to have Guerriero debate Family Research Council President Tony Perkins during a panel discussion. But a conservative source told ABC News that the Family Research Council wouldn’t participate in the debate and hinted it might withdraw its co-sponsorship unless the panel was canceled. A Family Research Council spokesperson denied that her organization threatened to withdraw its sponsorship, but the panel never took place. LaSalvia said he’s not expecting GOProud’s sponsorship of next year’s CPAC to be controversial. “I mean, we’re conservatives just like the other participants of the conference, and so we’ll be there as part of the conservative movement,” he said. ‘HIV will never be curable,’ doctor tells forum Wisecracking Pistole mixes humor with sobering message at community event By DAVID J. HOFFMAN Special to DC Agenda

‘I’d like to think we could get a vaccine for HIV but with the complexity of the virus, I’m not sure,’ said Dr. Michael Pistole at a community forum last week.

“Get tested, listen to the experts, and lead the responsible life,” declared Michael Pistole, the sexagenarian sexologist and sometime wisecracking medical doctor speaking at a meeting on surviving the AIDS and hepatitis C viruses. “Hepatitis C can be cured, but HIV will never be curable, since it gets into your DNA,” Pistole said. Speaking before a group of about 100 doctors, nurses, patients and other community members gathered at the Hotel Palomar for dinner and a “Survival Forum,” Pistole summed up his message of safer sex this way: “Realize it’s not just you, it’s the rest of the world.” Pistole’s message was punctuated by quips and risqué doubleentrendres, to put people at ease

and lighten the serious message about how exposure to HIV is still a real fear, while peppering the audience with sobering facts and figures underscoring that reality. “Yes, it’s a controllable situation — with antiretroviral drugs — and you can live a normal lifespan, long enough in fact to die from something else, but we have to accept the fact that [HIV is] just like herpes, that will also never be cured, and you can’t take a vaccine for the common cold either.” As for a vaccine to prevent exposure, he said, “I’d like to think we could get a vaccine for HIV but with the complexity of the virus, I’m not sure.” Hepatitis B, for example, has a vaccine, he pointed out, but hepatitis C does not. As his slideshow continued, the audience could literally read the writing on the wall — currently 1.1 million adults and adolescents exposed to the virus in this country, with pockets of greater exposure according to race, ethnicity and gender. For example, per 100,000 people in the U.S. in 2006, the most recent year for such data, there were an estimated 395 white males and 63 females exposed to the virus, com-

pared to 2,388 African-American males and 1,122 females, and 883 Hispanic males and 263 females. Exposure rates per 100,000 people were estimated for 2006 at 220 among Asian males and 46 females and 340 American Indian and Alaska Native males and 127 females. Pistole, 64, is an internal medicine specialist in private practice in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area where he has been caring for HIV and hepatitis C patients since 1982. Exposure to the viruses continues, said Pistole, with risky sexual behavior rampant now in cities like D.C. where the incidence of virus carriers is skyrocketing, especially among African Americans. According to Pistole, of total new infections recorded in 2006, 46 percent were African American, 36 percent were white, and 18 percent Hispanic, with approximately the same such proportions for men, but strikingly for women it was 61 percent African American versus 23 percent white. The highest risk factors remain IV drug use and male-to-male sexual contact, which had been decreasing as a cause of exposure but is now edging up again, said Pistole.

Among his other observations is what he called the antiviral “drug of the month” phenomenon, spurring some patients to say, “I want to try it,” something Pistole said should be discouraged by doctors. Following his address, Pistole took questions and comments from the audience, including a memorable exchange with Michael Sainte-Andress, a 60-yearold resident of Logan Circle diagnosed with HIV in 1986. “It’s very important to develop empowerment,” Sainte-Andress said. “You are the captain of your ship and everyone else on board is a deck hand.” Pistole replied that “the doctor is not the captain of your ship, but he can be a little bit more than a deckhand. He can be on board as your engineer.” Sainte-Andress is a local actor who recently played the role of Leonato in the Folger Theatre production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” The event was sponsored by Peter Metaxotos, sole proprietor of Alpha Drugs, the Dupont Circle pharmacy at 1638 R Street, N.W., Suite 260. The next such forum, Survival Forum VIII, will be held in January with a transgender summit planned for March.

Locals lament impending closure of Lambda Rising Continued from page 1 In the intervening years, the two opened branches of the store in Baltimore, Norfolk, Va., and Rehoboth Beach. In 2003, Lambda Rising bought the Oscar Wilde Bookshop in New York’s Greenwich Village, recognized as the nation’s first gay bookstore, having opened in 1967. Maccubbin said Lambda Rising bought that store to save it from closing. After more than three years of helping rebuild the Oscar Wilde store, Lambda Rising sold it to its manager, to return it to its status as a locally owned business. But earlier this year, due to the national economic downturn, the New York owner said he was forced to close the store. In its three decades of operation, Lambda Rising became one of the nation’s first gay businesses to advertise in mainstream publications and the first to advertise on TV in the 1970s. It has brought in hundreds of authors to its various store branches, including Andy Warhol, Sandra Bernhard, Armistead Maupin and Rita Mae Brown. “Closing the store now will certainly leave something of a hole in Washington’s literary and political scene, and even though I’m excited about the opportunities that will open up for us as we move into the next phase of our life, there is a bittersweet component to it all,” said Maccubbin. “But the book market has been changing dramatically, the GLBT community has been making progress by leaps and bounds, and 35 years is enough time for any person to devote to any one thing,” he said. “It’s just time to move on.”

Veteran D.C. gay activist Frank Kameny, who described himself as a loyal customer of Lambda Rising since it opened, said Maccubbin and the store deserve “enormous credit”

as a nationally recognized gay community resource. But he said he regrets that at least one aspect of the store’s mission has not been accomplished. “No non-gay bookstore that I know of has a gay section with content remotely comparable to that of Lambda Rising,” he said. “And many

of the publications found there will be unavailable elsewhere. Lambda Rising will be truly missed. Progress is often sad.” Rick Rosendall, vice president of the Gay & Lesbian Activists Alliance, called Lambda Rising a “landmark” for the LGBT community. “It will certainly be a major loss for

our community,” he said. Maccubbin said the store will begin a holiday sale as early as this weekend for many of its books and other products, such as gifts items. He said a “huge liquidation sale” will begin immediately after Christmas, with the store expected to close in early January.

Butts out in the cold as Va. gay bar goes smoke free Some welcome change at Freddie’s, others decry it By HARLEY DENNETT Special to DC Agenda There was fresh air, fresh faces and perhaps not quite so many raspyvoiced karaoke songs at Freddie’s Beach Bar & Restaurant last week as Virginia went smoke free. Business hasn’t declined since the Dec. 1 changeover, and some patrons even said they were enticed back or came for the first time as a result of the smoking ban. “It’s much more pleasant inside,” said Tom, a Crystal City man who declined to give his last name. A smoker, he has a non-smoking partner. The pair shuffled back and forth between the warmer entrance patio and the cold of winter’s first snow outside. “I support the ban,” he said. “I’ve only lived in Virginia for three years. Before that I lived in New York City. They had the ban. Before that, Boston. They had the ban. It’s an incentive to smoke less.” D.C. and Maryland banned smoking in bars and restaurants in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Freddie’s was the last remaining gay bar in the metro area to allow smoking. Not everyone at Freddie’s supports the ban. Ophelia Bottoms, Freddie’s Saturday night DJ and drag host reserved her anger for the Virginian government. “It was forced on us,” she said. “I think it’s funny that we’re the tobacco state and you can’t smoke inside. I perform in the city and Maryland, this was the only place left to perform where you could still smoke.” “Now it’s cold outside — really cold. When I’m not in drag it’s fine, but when it’s raining or snowing, it is

Vince, a former Freddie’s employee who declined to provide his last name, said he enjoyed being able to smoke while he worked. “I understand that non-smokers want to go somewhere that is smoke free, but as a smoker, we want somewhere that has a balcony or a patio with a roof,” he said. “I love Freddie’s,

but I want to go somewhere that has a smoking area.” Freddie Lutz, the establishment’s eponymous owner, said he’d have to check with the Health Department on what changes could be made to accommodate the displaced smokers. “I have a lot of smoking clientele, and I’ve grown very fond of them over the years,” he said. “They’re not bad people, they just smoke. I really appreciate all of them and they’ve been loyal to me, faithful loyal customers.” Returning that loyalty was “a work in

progress” he said, beginning with small changes like moving ashtrays outside. “There was a lot of that sort of talk [about a smoking deck] and the smokers were trying to think of ways we could get around it, we do the patio or something like that, but we really wanted to try this cold turkey.” Virginia law would not permit Freddie’s former non-smoking patio to be converted to a smoking area as it is currently fitted, because of the flaps. “If we do that, the flaps would have to be open. It could get cold. We could

have heaters on, too, but that would be pretty costly,” Lutz said. It would also lose functionality as additional seating, he noted, due to the exposure. Despite the complications, Lutz said he expected to see many new customers as a result of the changeover. “I had a lot of people come to me and say, ‘We would go to your place or we’d go to your place more often but we just can’t stand the smoke.’ I think we’re going to get a lot of those people coming now, which is a great thing.” Lutz said the smokers he talked to had accepted the change. “Anyone would admit that it was an inevitability, it was going to happen. I don’t think we’re going to lose the smokers because where can they go? They can’t go to D.C.; they can’t go to Maryland. “I’m an ex-smoker myself. I swore to myself I wouldn’t turn into one of those bitchy ex-smokers. I can relate and feel for the smokers and it’s unfortunate that it’s in the dead of winter. I know it’s difficult for them.” Freddie’s manager Ray Martin confirmed that bar receipts were unchanged this week. “For every customer that is maybe staying home and smoking now, more customers are coming out,” he said. “Personally, I’m very pleased. My smoking has been cut down to a third of what it used to be. Every smoker out there really wishes they could quit.” Customers who can’t stand to abandon either Freddie’s or their cigarettes could find hope in the bar owner’s plans to open another Freddie’s in another city, particularly in Florida. “I’m down in Fort Lauderdale looking for a bar,” he said. “It is still smoking down here, interestingly enough. Freddie’s has been a smoking bar all this time so it wouldn’t bother me. “I was actually surprised — pleasantly surprised — that Virginia did this. I thought they’d be the absolute last because they’re such a tobacco state, so now if we could just get them to legalize gay marriage, we’d be set.”

Kaine proposes DP benefits for state workers By CHRIS JOHNSON [email protected] The outgoing governor of Virginia is working to extend health benefits to the same-sex partners of state employees, but questions linger over whether his successor will accept the changes. Last week, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) directed his office to start drafting the regulations that would be required for the rule change, but he has only a few weeks left in office and, according to the Washington Post, the rules won’t be ready for implementation for another 18 months. The decision on whether or not to enact the changes will be left to Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell. Kaine spokesperson Lynda Tran was quoted in the Virginian-Pilot as saying the benefits won’t bring any new costs to the state because the employee would take on any expens-

es associated with adding a person to the insurance rolls. The new policy would apply not only to state workers with same-sex partners, but also employees seeking to cover other individuals in their households, including opposite-sex partners and adult children. McDonnell’s transition team didn’t respond to DC Agenda’s request for comment. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency and must be treated in the hospital. • Worsening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Patients with HBV infection, who take EPZICOM and then stop it, may get “flare-ups” of their hepatitis. “Flare-up” is when the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before. If you have HBV infection, your doctor should closely monitor your liver function for several months after stopping EPZICOM. You may need to take anti-HBV medicines. • Use with interferon- and ribavirin-based regimens. Worsening of liver disease (sometimes resulting in death) has occurred in patients infected with both HIV and hepatitis C virus who are taking anti-HIV medicines and are also being treated for hepatitis C with interferon with or without ribavirin. If you are taking EPZICOM as well as interferon with or without ribavirin and you experience side effects, be sure to tell your doctor. EPZICOM can have other serious side effects. Be sure to read the section below entitled “What are the possible side effects of EPZICOM?” What is EPZICOM? EPZICOM is a prescription medicine used to treat HIV infection. EPZICOM includes 2 medicines: abacavir (ZIAGEN) and lamivudine or 3TC (EPIVIR®). See the end of this Medication Guide for a complete list of ingredients in EPZICOM. Both of these medicines are called nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). When used together, they help lower the amount of HIV in your blood. This helps to keep your immune system as healthy as possible so that it can help fight infection. Different combinations of medicines are used to treat HIV infection. You and your doctor should discuss which combination of medicines is best for you. • EPZICOM does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. We do not know if EPZICOM will help you live longer or have fewer of the medical problems that people get with HIV or AIDS. It is very important that you see your doctor regularly while you are taking EPZICOM. • EPZICOM does not lower the risk of passing HIV to other people through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. For your health and the health of others, it is important to always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier method to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Never use or share dirty needles. Who should not take EPZICOM? Do not take EPZICOM if you: • have ever had a serious allergic reaction (a hypersensitivity reaction) to EPZICOM or any other medicine that has abacavir as one of its ingredients (TRIZIVIR and ZIAGEN). See the end of this Medication Guide for a complete list of ingredients in EPZICOM. • have a liver that does not function properly. • are less than 18 years of age. Before starting EPZICOM tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have been tested and know whether or not you have a particular gene variation called HLA-B*5701. • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. We do not know if EPZICOM will harm your unborn child. You and your doctor will need to decide if EPZICOM is right for you. If you use EPZICOM while you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about how you can be on the Antiviral Pregnancy Registry for EPZICOM. • are breastfeeding. Especially tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines*: • methadone • HIVID® (zalcitabine, ddC) • EPIVIR or EPIVIR-HBV® (lamivudine, 3TC), ZIAGEN (abacavir sulfate), COMBIVIR® (lamivudine and zidovudine), or TRIZIVIR (abacavir sulfate, lamivudine, and zidovudine).

How should I take EPZICOM? • Take EPZICOM by mouth exactly as your doctor prescribes it. The usual dose is 1 tablet once a day. Do not skip doses. • You can take EPZICOM with or without food. • If you miss a dose of EPZICOM, take the missed dose right away. Then, take the next dose at the usual time. • Do not let your EPZICOM run out. • Starting EPZICOM again can cause a serious allergic or life-threatening reaction, even if you never had an allergic reaction to it before. If you run out of EPZICOM even for a few days, you must ask your doctor if you can start EPZICOM again. If your doctor tells you that you can take EPZICOM again, start taking it when you are around medical help or people who can call a doctor if you need one. • If you stop your anti-HIV drugs, even for a short time, the amount of virus in your blood may increase and the virus may become harder to treat. • If you take too much EPZICOM, call your doctor or poison control center right away. What should I avoid while taking EPZICOM? • Do not take EPIVIR (lamivudine, 3TC), COMBIVIR (lamivudine and zidovudine), ZIAGEN (abacavir sulfate), or TRIZIVIR (abacavir sulfate, lamivudine, and zidovudine) while taking EPZICOM. Some of these medicines are already in EPZICOM. • Do not take zalcitabine (HIVID, ddC) while taking EPZICOM. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV infection, as EPZICOM does not stop you from passing the HIV infection to others. • Do not share needles or other injection equipment. • Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades. • Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier method to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. • Do not breastfeed. EPZICOM can be passed to babies in breast milk and could harm the baby. Also, mothers with HIV should not breastfeed because HIV can be passed to the baby in the breast milk. ‘New Yorkers have been betrayed’ Marriage bill’s defeat in state Senate marks major setback By CHRIS JOHNSON [email protected] The defeat of same-sex marriage legislation in the New York State Senate last week was a devastating blow to gay rights supporters, leaving many to wonder how the bill could fail after its advocates had expressed confidence in the measure’s passage. The New York State Senate on Dec. 2 voted 24-38 against the legalization of same-sex marriage, a lopsided margin that raised questions for those who were watching the bill’s progress. State Sen. Tom Duane, who’s gay, was the prime sponsor of the Senate marriage legislation. He had media outlets he was “optimistic” about the proposal’s chances before senators killed the bill. Duane, who didn’t respond to D.C. Agenda’s request for an interview, issued a statement saying he felt “betrayed” following the vote. “Promises made were not honored,” he said. “The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and all fair-minded New Yorkers have been betrayed. I am enraged, deeply disappointed and profoundly saddened by the vote today.” Groups advocating for passage of the marriage bill included Empire State Pride Agenda and Gill Action Fund. Those organizations didn’t respond to D.C. Agenda’s request for comment. Dan Pinello, a gay government professor at the City University of New York, said the Senate was unable to pass the marriage bill because the Democratic Party, which narrowly controls the Senate, 32-30, is “in disarray, basically — not only on this particular policy issue, but more generally.”

State Sen. Tom Duane, who’s gay and was the prime sponsor of the marriage legislation, said he was ‘enraged, deeply disappointed and profoundly saddened’ when his chamber voted against the bill. “There are a number of factions within the Democratic caucus in the Senate that makes cohesiveness in that caucus extremely difficult, unlike the Republican caucus, which is much more united in its position,” he said. “I think the vote [Dec. 2] reflected that.” Marty Rouse, the Human Rights Campaign’s national field director, also said he thinks the marriage bill failed because of the politically tenuous situation in the Senate. He noted that Democrats briefly lost control of the chamber in a coup earlier this year before regaining leadership. “It’s difficult to pass legislation when you have a change in Senate leadership, a new and tenuous Senate majority,” he said. “There is a lot of politics in play in passing any sort of legislation.” Rouse said the marriage bill failed not because of the merits of the legislation, but because of political issues in the Senate. “This has much more to do about politics and very little, if anything, to do about the merits of the marriage bill itself,” he said.

The legislation failed in the Senate even though the bill had strong support in the Assembly, which approved the measure for a third time Dec. 2, 88-51. Gov. David Paterson (D) also was a strong advocate for the marriage bill. Pinello said the legislation failed in the Senate — but passed in the Assembly — because senators “are out of touch with their constituents.” He said polling data shows a majority of Long Island residents favor samesex marriage and noted that threequarters of that region’s Senate delegation voted against the marriage bill. Eight Democratic senators voted against the marriage bill Wednesday. All Republican senators voted against it. Jeff Cook, a legislative adviser for the Log Cabin Republicans who had lobbied GOP lawmakers on the bill, said there was no Republican backing because the dissent among Democrats meant GOP support wouldn’t have made a difference. Before the vote, Cook had said he was expecting Republican votes in favor of the legislation.

“Sadly, we didn’t lose on the merits, but we lost because of politicians’ lack of political courage to do the right thing,” he said. “Seeing insufficient support on the Democratic side, key Republicans communicated that they were unwilling to follow their conscience and take a tough political vote if they couldn’t make the difference on a losing bill.” Pinello said Republican Assembly member Dede Scozzafava’s recent failed bid for Congress also had an effect on GOP senators. Scozzafava, who has voted in favor of same-sex marriage three times, ran for Congress in a special election this year, but withdrew her candidacy after a third-party conservative candidate challenged her because of her position on marriage, among other issues. “I think there was some fallout as a result of that on the Senate Republican side,” Pinello said. “I can’t believe that the Republican caucus is so uniformly opposed to marriage equality that not even one or more would have favored it.” Although the bill was voted down, Pinello said having the vote last week was appropriate because “to keep putting it off is just unacceptable as a political matter.” “So, now that their votes are recorded, activists can try to target those people — especially in the Democratic Party, but also Republicans — who voted against marriage equality, in next year’s legislative election cycle,” he said. Asked whether the bill should have come to the floor, Rouse replied, “I’m not going to second guess the decisions that were made.” But the failed attempt means supporters of same-sex marriage will have to wait before marriage rights for gay couples become available in New York. Rouse said there is no reason why supporters shouldn’t work to bring the bill up again in the “very near future,” and said it’s possible for Senate leadership to find a way to have another vote within a few weeks.

Another 14 months would be the longest it would take to bring the marriage bill to the floor of the Senate again, Rouse said. “If we have to have this bill come up after the elections, clearly the 2010 election and who’s running again for office ... all of that will be important,” he said. “Supporters of marriage equality and opponents of marriage equality will be focusing like a laser beam on the primary and general elections in 2010.” Pinello, however, said that 2013 might be a more realistic time for samesex marriage to pass in New York. He said after Senate districts are redrawn following the 2010 Census, there would be an opportunity to elect more supporters of same-sex marriage to the Senate in the 2012 elections. With Democrats in control of both chambers of the New York Legislature, Senate districts could be redrawn in ways that are more favorable to Democrats, meaning more supporters of gay nuptials could be elected to the Senate in 2012 to take office in 2013 and vote for marriage legislation. “I think it’s possible that there won’t be a favorable vote in the New York State Senate until 2013 on the issue of marriage equality — four years from now,” he said. Still, Rouse said he was optimistic and he didn’t think there’s “anyone involved in politics in New York State that doesn’t think there is ... support for this bill becoming law in the near future.” He noted that State Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. was the only lawmaker to speak out against the marriage bill on the Senate floor and no Republicans voiced opposition during debate. “That tells me there is support for this bill waiting for the right time for this bill to come up,” he said. “And so, for me, it’s not a matter of if this is going to become law, it’s a matter of when this bill is going to become law, and for various reasons, unfortunately, early this week was not the right time.”

Gay ambassador to New Zealand takes oath Biden hails nation’s ‘true diversity’ By CHRIS JOHNSON [email protected] Vice President Joe Biden cited the administration’s belief that sexual orientation is an important element of diversity before swearing in last week the first openly gay U.S. ambassador nominated by President Obama. “I believe and President Obama strongly believes that America projects its best face to the world when it reflects the true diversity of our country — whether it’s race, religion, gender or sexual orientation,” he said. Biden made brief remarks before swearing in David Huebner as the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. The U.S. Senate confirmed Huebner for the role last month.

Standing next to Huebner during the ceremony was Duane McWaine, his partner of 20 years and a psychiatrist. The mothers of Huebner and McWaine also were in the audience, and were escorted by Biden. The vice president said that Huebner wasn’t chosen for the ambassador position because of his sexual orientation; Biden noted that Huebner’s professional accomplishments qualified him for the role. Most recently head of the Shanghai-based China & International Disputes division for the law firm Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, Huebner also has a history in LGBT activism. He served as a board member of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and served as the group’s general counsel, according to a GLAAD statement released when Huebner was nominated. swearing-in ceremony, and noted the U.S. affords him the opportunity to serve as ambassador even though his family came from humble beginnings and he’s gay. “I can imagine few other countries on Earth where someone like me could serve in this role,” he said. “My grandfather was an immigrant coal miner; my father was a meat cutter. I was sworn in today standing next to my spouse who happens to be a different race and of the same gender as I am. In America, such a trajectory is not only possible, it is natural.” The appointment of Hueber makes him the third openly gay ambassador to serve the U.S. President Bill Clinton nominated James Hormel as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, and former President George W. Bush nominated Michael Guest as U.S. ambassador to Romania.

Nadler expects same-sex marriage will pass in N.Y. Continued from page 1 Nadler’s legislation would overturn DOMA, allowing the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages. It also has a “certainty provision” that would allow same-sex couples to marry in one state and still receive federal benefits even if they move to another state where gay nuptials aren’t recognized. In lieu of passage in this Congress, Nadler said the task for supporters is to find more co-sponsors for the bill. As of Tuesday, the bill had 105 co-sponsors. Nadler predicted support would grow. “And I think if some of these other bills pass, it’ll become more — the idea becomes less avant garde,” he said. In response to Nadler’s remarks that a DOMA repeal won’t happen next year, Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry, said, “I don’t think we should begin the conversation about when it’s going to happen. I think we should begin the conversation with how do we build support and make it happen.” “There are two ways to talk about our movement,” he said. “One is to talk about what it’s really about, to actually make the case for inclusion and fairness and freedom, to talk about why marriage matters. … The other is to spend all our time talking about the chess game or the political horse race, and we spend too much time on the latter and not enough time doing the former.” Wolfson said supporters should begin the conversation “by each one of us calling our senators and member of Congress, asking them to sign on to the bill.”

Strategic decisions Nadler’s prediction that a DOMA repeal won’t happen by the end of next year comes after other key potential supporters have said other LGBT legislation will be a priority. At the time the Respect for Marriage Act was introduced in September, Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said the speaker is “focused on legislative items that we can enact into law now,” including ENDA. And gay Rep. Barney Frank (DMass.) hasn’t signed on as a cosponsor to Nadler’s bill, saying that lawmakers will instead focus on other LGBT issues this Congress and the bill’s certainty provision could cause political problems for House members seeking re-election. Nadler said he hasn’t “had too many conversations” with Pelosi on the proposed DOMA repeal since it was introduced, but noted that the speaker has privately encouraged House members to co-sponsor the bill. As for Frank, Nadler also said he hasn’t spoken much with the Massachusetts lawmaker on the issue since the bill’s introduction. “We have a disagreement on the strategy on this obviously, as we had a disagreement on the strategy over the non-inclusive ENDA last [Congress] where we no longer have that disagreement,” he said. “And, I presume, in the end, we will not have a disagreement on this.”

Rep. Jerrold Nadler said of his home state that ‘as long as we keep a Democratic governor and state Senate in the next election, we’ll get a gay marriage bill relatively soon in New York.’ Although supporters have said other bills will take priority this Congress, advocates for the DOMA repeal have hoped for congressional hearings on marriage by the end of next year. But Nadler, who chairs a House Judiciary subcommittee with jurisdiction over marriage, said he wouldn’t commit to holding hearings on the issue by the end of next year and would hear only testimony “when we think it’s advantageous to do so.” “And that’s a strategic decision, a tactical decision you have to make,” he said. “As things go on, we’ll have to see how things go. Right now, the thing is get the idea out there to get pressure built, to get more sponsors — and that’s the way to go.” Asked whether Democratic leadership requested that he not hold hearings on marriage, Nadler replied, “No, they did not.” Nadler said he expects a Senate companion to the Respect for Marriage Act would be introduced early next year, noting there are a number of potential sponsors for the Senate legislation. Advocates have named Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) as a prime target in talks because he chairs a Senate Judiciary subcommittee with jurisdiction over marriage. Nadler said Feingold would “possibly” champion the Senate legislation. Nadler said a Senate bill has yet to emerge so many months after the House introduction in September because potential supporters have

been occupied with other tasks. “Some of the people we’re dealing with are very busy with a number of other things,” he said. “There’s not a sense of urgency, the sense that this bill has to have a Senate sponsor right now because it’s going to pass right now, because it’s not, so we’re talking.” Even without a sense of urgency among lawmakers, Nadler said he thinks DOMA should be repealed because it’s “a stain on the national honor.” “Even if you didn’t have a lot of practical effects, which obviously it does have, it’s wrong to keep such things on the books,” he said. “The honor of the country demands we repeal it.” Same-sex marriage is only legal in five states throughout the country, but Nadler predicted that number would grow in coming years, and would include his home state of New York. The Empire State was seen to be on the precipice of legalizing samesex marriage, but the hopes of supporters were dashed last week when the state Senate killed a bill that would have granted marriage rights for same-sex couples. Nadler, who served in the New York Assembly for 16 years before being elected to Congress, said same-sex marriage will nonetheless be legalized in the state in a few years. “I’d be very surprised if New York didn’t pass a gay marriage bill in the next two years, and I’ve been studying New York politics for 40 years,” he said. “And as long as we keep a Democratic governor and state Senate in the next election, we’ll get a gay marriage bill rel-

atively soon in New York.” As the number of states with same-sex marriage grow, Nadler said support for the Respect for Marriage Act also will build. “Especially as a number of states have gay marriage, and the sky doesn’t fall in, and nobody comes in and busts up regular marriages — other than what’s busting up anyway — I think the issue will recede in the sense that people will lose their sense of the novelty,” he said.

Gay immigration bill could join reform debate Another bill Nadler is championing in the House is the Uniting American Families Act, which would enable gay Americans to sponsor their foreign partners for residency. With an effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform expected in Congress next year, advocates are trying to include UAFA as a provision in the larger legislation. Nadler said the White House seems to want to take on immigration reform in the spring and said UAFA supporters will “make a major thrust to make this part of the comprehensive immigration reform debate.” The lawmakers drafting comprehensive immigration reform legislation are Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Nadler said it’s “hard to say” whether those bills would include a UAFA provision upon their introduction.

“There are a lot of cross pressures and we haven’t had those — we’ve started but we haven’t finished those conversations at this point,” he said. But Steve Ralls, a spokesperson for Immigration Equality, said he’s “optimistic” immigration reform measures will include UAFA at their debut because supporters, including other lawmakers, immigration groups and LGBT groups, have been lobbying for an inclusive bill for some time. “I don’t know what the final comprehensive immigration reform will look like, but I remain optimistic that it will include lesbian and gay families,” he said. In the event that comprehensive immigration reform legislation doesn’t include UAFA when it debuts, Nadler said he’s working on making sure there are votes in the House Judiciary Committee to amend the bill to include such a provision. Nadler said he’s “hopeful” there will be enough votes for an amendment, but added “that’ll be a big fight, if necessary.” “I haven’t taken any votes or whip counts or done any kind of that work, but certainly it will be something that we’ll have to work at and the gay community and everybody will have to be pressuring the individual members of the committee,” Nadler said. “A lot of the members of the committee, the Democratic members especially, say they’re very great friends with the gay community … and this’ll be an opportunity to show that they are, bar none.”

ENDA stalls as key supporters tackle financial reform One major obstacle that UAFA supporters will face is opposition from Catholic leaders. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has urged lawmakers to exclude the provision from immigration reform because church leaders support reform, but oppose the LGBTspecific provision. Nadler said opposition to UAFA from Catholic leaders will make inclusion of the measure in the bill “a very difficult fight.” “So, there will be some who will be tempted to say, ‘Wait a minute, let’s not alienate some of our major supporters on this legislation to pass it,’” he said. “There’ll be others of us saying, ‘Hey, no, if you’re doing a comprehensive bill, it’s got to be comprehensive. You can’t just leave certain people out.” Even with opposition from Catholic leaders, Ralls said the list of religious groups who support the inclusion of UAFA in immigration reform “is very long and diverse,” and includes Quakers and Episcopalians. “If the Conference of Catholic Bishops decides that they’re willing to throw the immigrant community under the bus because of the inclusion of LGBT couples, I think that would be a shame because, at the end of the day, immigration reform can help millions of families — both

gay and straight — and that should be Congress’ priority.” Asked whether he would support immigration reform legislation that doesn’t include a UAFA provision, Nadler replied, “I hope it doesn’t come to that.” “All my efforts are designed to make sure it doesn’t come to that, so I’m not going to get into what happens at that point,” he said.

‘We will see a fair amount of action’ During his Agenda interview, Nadler also addressed arguments that the Obama administration and Congress haven’t made sufficient progress on LGBT issues since the start of this year. The lawmaker said Congress has had a significant workload this year — including the passage of two annual budgets as well as stimulus and relief legislation for financial institutions — and that advocates for LGBT issues would be better to make judgments on Congress’ work at the end of next year. “I think it would be very fair by the time the election rolls around next October to say we haven’t done enough on these issues,” he said. “I think a lot of things have been fermenting and cooking. I think we will see a fair amount of action on these issues in next year’s session.”

Asked whether President Obama could have spoken more forcefully on LGBT issues since the start of his administration, Nadler replied, “I think he could have been more forthright on some of them.” He declined to elaborate. In response to recent criticism that lawmakers have been putting off action on ENDA, Nadler said some key supporters of the bill have been occupied with other issues. He noted the sponsor of the bill is Frank, who, as chair of the House Financial Services Committee, is also working on the Troubled Asset Relief Program legislation. “Why aren’t we doing ENDA right now?” he said. “But what else are some of the key people doing? They’re over their heads with the financial reform, which no one anticipated six months ago. I suspect that once that is out of the way, which it should be soon, these kind of issues can come to the fore again.” But John Aravosis, a gay blogger who has been leading an LGBT boycott of the Democratic National Committee, criticized the notion that Congress hasn’t acted on LGBT issues because lawmakers have been busy with other issues. He said the Obama administration has found time to take swipes at the LGBT community by defending DOMA in court and, more recently, saying it couldn’t follow a court order

from the Ninth Circuit judge to provide health benefits to the partner of a lesbian federal employee. “It’s not enough just for them to say, ‘It’s been busy,’” he said. “Well, it hasn’t been busy — or so busy that they couldn’t take swipes at us.” Aravois commended Nadler for being outspoken on LGBT issues, but questioned whether Nadler would criticize a Democratic Congress as a Democratic lawmaker, and whether Congress would, in fact, take up LGBT issues next year. “Good luck passing gay rights legislation right before an election,” he said. “Democrats don’t have balls in off years — they certainly don’t have them right before elections, on gay issues especially.” With regard to the LGBT legislation that Congress would take up next year, Nadler expressed uncertainty about the prediction that Congress would repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” next year as part of the authorization bill for the fiscal year 2011 defense budget. Frank told the media last month that was the way he envisioned repeal. But Nadler said repeal through the defense budget might not be the best way to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” With the president calling for escalation of operations in Afghanistan, Nadler said such a provision would put more liberal members of Congress in a quandary over

whether to vote for repeal and military operations at the same time. “You don’t want to put people in the position of saying, ‘You vote against Afghanistan funding, you’re voting against [repealing] “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,”’ or vice-versa,” he said. “So maybe you need a new option or something. These are tactical considerations, which you have to look at as things unfold.” Nadler said he, for example, didn’t “like this idea of sending more troops to Afghanistan,” although he supports a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal. With public approval polls showing support waning for Democrats, Nadler predicted congressional Democrats will lose seats in the 2010 election, but added a hope that the party won’t lose “too many” seats. He noted that the November results would largely depend on how well the economy is faring. Even with Democrats potentially in danger, Nadler said he didn’t think lawmakers would avoid LGBT issues next year to reduce a perceived risk of alienating voters before the election. “I think we’re going to face most of these issues this Congress, mostly next year,” he said. “I’m assuming that the gay community is going to keep the pressure on. I mean, don’t go to sleep because I said it as that. If the gay community keeps the pressure on, then I think that, yes, we’ll probably face most of these issues.”

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case regarding a college student group that bans gay members.

Supreme Court to hear college bias case WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up a case testing the limits of religious freedom when those rights clash with a college’s policy of non-discrimination against gays and lesbians. The Christian Science Monitor reported the Christian Legal Society at the Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco was stripped of its registered student organization status at the college because it refused to allow gay and lesbian students to become voting members or officers. Under the college’s non-discrimination policy, student organizations must allow fellow students to join and potentially seek leadership positions in any organization without regard to their status or beliefs. Starting in the 2004-2005 academic year, the college’s student organization required prospective members to sign a statement of Christian faith. In addition, the national Christian Legal Society developed a policy position regarding its view of biblical principles of sexual morality. The position, adopted by the Hastings chapter, says that “unrepentant participation in or advocacy of a sexually immoral lifestyle” was inconsistent with the group’s statement of faith and would disqualify an individual from membership, according to the Christian Science Monitor. “A person who advocates or unrepentantly engages in sexual conduct outside marriage between a man and a woman is not considered to be living consistently with the Statement of Faith and, therefore, is not eligible” for membership in the CLS, according to the group’s legal brief. The legal battle that ensued has pitted arguments of religious freedom against the college’s non-discrimination policy. The Supreme Court must now resolve the case.The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case regarding a college student group that bans gay members.

Houston mayoral race sees anti-gay mailing HOUSTON — The finance chair and a finance committee member for a Houston mayoral candidate’s campaign helped bankroll the conservative political action committee that sent out an anti-gay mailer targeting his lesbian opponent, Annise Parker, according to Texas Ethics Commission documents. The Houston Chronicle reported the revelation immediately drew accusations of illegal coordination from the campaign of Parker, whom the mailer urged voters not to choose because she was endorsed by the “gay and lesbian political caucus.” Documents show the officials with Gene Locke’s campaign donated $40,000 to the political action committee responsible for the mailing. The committee received a $20,000 donation about a week before the mail pieces went out from Ned Holmes, finance chair of Locke’s campaign, and $20,000 from James Dannenbaum, who is on Locke’s finance committee. The committee, known as the Conservative Republicans of Harris County, lists $56,000 in donations between Oct. 25 and Dec. 2. Only two other donors, who contributed a total of $16,000, are listed.

Marriage bill passes N.J. Senate committee In a 7-6 vote, a New Jersey Senate panel Monday approved legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in the Garden State, clearing the way for a Senate floor vote. The State Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill after hearing seven hours of public testimony. A Senate floor vote was set for Thursday, after the Agenda’s deadline. Steven Goldstein, chair of Garden State Equality, said that with Monday’s vote, “we in New Jersey proved that we have the kind of mettle that New Jerseyans are famous for.” “We got up off the mat, came out swinging and we won a great victory last night,” he said. “This bill was considered dead last week, after New York [senators voted against a same-sex marriage bill], and we rose, like Sisyphus, and we snatched this victory, and New Jersey can be proud today.” Goldstein said he didn’t want to speculate on how the bill would fare on the Senate floor and that he was concentrating on the work needed to secure support for the measure. Finding sufficient support for the bill in the Senate is seen as the greatest obstacle in legalizing same-sex marriage in New Jersey. Senate President Richard Codey told WNYC radio last month that the bill lacked unanimous support among the Democratic caucus, and Republican votes are needed to pass it. A vote in the Assembly has not yet been scheduled. Supporters of same-sex marriage are under the gun to pass the bill. Outgoing Gov. Jon Corzine (D) has said he’d sign the legislation, but his successor, Republican Chris Christie, who will take office Jan. 19, has said he’d veto the bill.

The DC Agenda broke news last week that Lambda Rising, a cornerstone of the city’s LGBT community since it opened in 1974, will close its doors in early 2010. Deacon Maccubbin, the store’s founder and co-owner, said he plans to retire and that he and co-owner Jim Bennett, his partner of 32 years, decided they would rather close than sell to a new owner who might change the focus and mission of the business. In addition to the D.C. store, Maccubbin said the sister store in Rehoboth Beach, Del., would also close. “The phrase ‘mission accomplished’ has gotten a bad rap in recent years but in this case, it certainly applies,” Maccubbin said, noting that LGBT books can now be found in most general bookstores and retailers. The growing acceptance of homosexuality (at least in some urban areas and liberal enclaves) has mitigated the need for certain gay-specific businesses. Unlike previous generations of gay youth, young gay people today can find endless information and resources online. But Lambda Rising represented so much more than a place to buy books. It has served as a hub of the LGBT community and a beacon for closeted youth yearning for a sense of identity. So many of us, myself included,

I can’t imagine gay D.C. without it. I remember walking nervously into the store as a teenager, afraid of being spotted by someone and outed. It was a scene played out thousands of times over the years. Even today, as older gay men who were pressured into marriage and

having kids when they were younger, finally come to terms with their sexual orientation and come out, they come to Lambda Rising for help. Just three weeks ago, when the Washington Blade was shuttered by its parent company, I found myself inexplicably drawn to Lambda Rising. I walked in and asked to see Deacon, who ushered me into his upstairs office. He was a sounding board

when I needed to vent and offered his support to us in this new venture. Deacon and Jim have earned their retirement after decades of service to the community. They’ve helped more people than they probably realize. Congratulations to them for accomplishing their life’s mission.

My earliest education in gay history and culture is due entirely to the amazing books I ordered from Lambda Rising, and they continue to enrich my life to this day. I never made it to the actual store, but Lambda Rising will always hold a special place in my heart. Take it from a black, gay Republican… … our strength lies in our diversity By ROBERT TURNER

‘Religion has been used as a weapon all throughout history. This is especially true with the case of slavery here in the United States.’

A week ago, a friend of mine posted an open question to conservatives: “How many conservative positions must one hold on the issues in order to be considered a conservative?” But in order to answer that question, you must first define what a conservative is. The conservatism I believe in is a combination of lower taxes, less government spending, freer trade, freer markets, individual liberty, personal responsibility and a strong antiCommunist foreign policy. I believe there are two forms of conservatism: fundamentalism and true conservatism. I see fundamentalist conservatism as a recent dogma, having become popular with the rise of the Christian Coalition and the religious right in the mid-80s. Now, while I am a religious person, I do not adhere to all of their dictates. Religion has been used as a weapon all throughout history. This is especially true with the case of slavery here in the United States.

out of the marriage business and only allow churches to marry couples. Then the state could provide civil unions or domestic partnerships to any who applied — gay and straight alike. Fundamentalists bloviate because they want everyone to adhere to their way of life, forgetting that this is America where we hold certain truths to be self-evident. Phrases like religious freedom, and separation of church and state don’t fit into their small-minded worlds. They always go back to the Bible, often citing Leviticus, but forgetting passages like Matthew 5:10, John 13:34, and Psalms 129:2. The Bible says many things, like it’s an abomination to eat shellfish or cut your hair. It also allows for a man to beat his wife, but that is not an acceptable practice today in America. It’s funny how like liberals with the Constitution, fundamentalists like to pick and choose which

Many have asked me how I can be gay, yet call myself a Republican or a conservative. To them, I say the answer is easy. It’s a similar answer I give to those who pose the same question about me being black and Republican. A long time ago, I looked at the issues on both sides of the political spectrum. While there are a few on the left I agree with, there are many more on the right that fit my belief structure. To those who ask the black/ Republican question, I ask, “Is it racist to say that all blacks look alike?” I’ve yet to encounter anyone who says no

to that question. I then quickly follow up with, “Then isn’t it equally racist to say we all think alike?” To those who ask the gay/ Republican question, I merely point to a rainbow flag and echo the mantra “strength through diversity.” When it comes to marriage equality, I simply must repudiate any argument for not allowing gays to marry. If one truly wants to protect the sanctity of marriage, then the government should make it incredibly hard to get a divorce and outlaw annulments altogether. If it’s a religious argument, then get the state completely

parts of the Bible to focus on. Yes, the Bible does condemn homosexuality. But I know that God made me in His image. He didn’t create me simply to condemn me to hell from the get go. The Bible also says an eye for an eye. And then there are the Ten Commandments. I recall that when the Defense of Marriage Act was being pushed through Congress, the very supporters who were vehemently championing the legislation were themselves guilty of violating several of the commandments. If you truly believe in the foundations of America and our Constitution, and one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, then you must strive for just that — liberty and justice for all. Aiden Shaw on surviving porn, prostitution you think this was done partly on a subconscious level to keep anyone from getting too close to you? Shaw: I can see how it may seem like that there could be a great bit of sub context, however, unfortunately, it just wasn’t that deep. To be truthful, we never thought of things like that at the time. It’s just how things were at the time, due to all the drugs — not to mention information wasn’t available like it is now. Everyone has a cell phone now, when back then if you wanted to reach someone you needed to make an effort.

HIV-positive author writes about selling his innocence By TYRONE FORD Special to DC Agenda To categorize Aiden Shaw as just a prostitute and porn star would be both lazy and obvious. With more than 50 adult films to his name and years spent as a prostitute, he is approachable, intelligent and a survivor. Shaw was in Washington earlier this month to promote his newest book, “Sordid Truths: Selling My Innocence for a Taste of Stardom,” and appear at EFN Lounge/Motley Bar. The owner of EFN Lounge, Bill Gray, said he asked Shaw to make an appearance at the establishment’s Friday night “Bearly CODE” happy hour. “I didn’t want him to come and sign books,” Bill said. “I wanted him to just come and meet the guys of D.C., sign autographs — just socialize. He really fits in with the crowd that comes to Motley, so it really made sense.” DC Agenda spoke with Aiden about his book, his time as a prostitute and more. Agenda: In “Sordid Truths,” when describing the cross you’d made of “twigs and thorny red roses,” you make mention

Aiden Shaw that you loved iconography and the passionate yet brutal imagery of Catholicism. Where do you believe this love stemmed from and do you still have it? Shaw: I’ve always thought religious iconography was beautiful, even since I was a child. You see, to me it’s not about the beliefs behind it but the artistic beauty of the objects themselves. Agenda: You say that while working as a prostitute, undressed, you felt less exposed, and that naked was your uniform. Were you always so comfortable in your skin? Were there ever instances where you were less sure? Shaw: It’s funny about that. Some people think I may just walk around

naked when I’m home, but you see when I’m by myself, I prefer to be clothed at all times — nearly to the point of showering in a bathing suit. But work is work, and being naked is the uniform for the job I was doing, and I was completely comfortable in that. Anyone who wears a uniform during the day for any job wants to change out of it as soon as the day is done, don’t they? I can say the same thing: That [after] being naked all day, it’s nice to just have the clothes back on while not working. Agenda: There are some instances in the book where you discuss not knowing or sharing certain pieces of information about people in your life. Do

Agenda: You make reference to reading “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde whenever you felt unsure of yourself. What part of the story do you identify most with? Is this something you still practice? Shaw: Absolutely. It’s timeless and I believe it will always affect me. I always recommend everyone read it at least once.

Agenda: Looking back on your film career, are there any that meant the most to you? Shaw: I can’t really say any one film meant the most to me. Really, each film was just publicity, which is really what it’s all about. The more I got my name and face out there, the better off I was.

Agenda: Towards the end of the book, you write, “Just say no to dealing drugs, not taking them.” You stated at your book signing that you are now sober. Has your opinion changed on this topic? Shaw: “What the real problem is with most people is they become addicted. Addiction is the real problem, not necessarily the usage. Not that I’m condoning the usage, but the real problems

Agenda: What are your thoughts on today’s young gay guys in the adult film industry? Shaw: I don’t really watch much of it, to be honest. Who is good and who isn’t is such a personal choice depending on what you find sexy. I find the demeanor of someone far more attractive, the way he looks at me, or holds his mouth in a particular way, than any one physical trait.

A trip back in time in ‘Cadillac’

Like TV’s ‘Mad Men,’ this play revels in old-school references By PATRICK FOLLIARD Best known for playing varied eccentrics and batty matrons, terrific local actor Nancy Robinette is at it again. This time it’s Mrs. Laura Partridge, an offbeat, seemingly insignificant, middle-aged woman who shakes up corporate America in The Studio Theatre’s revival of Howard Teichmann and George S. Kaufman’s 1953 hit comedy, “The Solid Gold Cadillac.” A modern fairytale about the triumph of the little guy over big business, “Cadillac” undoubtedly resonates today. A minor but determined stockholder in General Products, Mrs. Partridge (who knows nothing about business and consults her horoscope before making a move) takes on some rather odious executives (David Sabin, James Slaughter, Paul L. Nolan, and Leo Erickson) with surprising results. While stymieing the fat cats at every turn, she rather unwittingly wins the support and attentions of the powerful, aging alpha male Edward L. McKeever (Michael Goodwin). An out-of-work stage actor, Mrs.

Robinette adds perfect measures of temper, innocence, determination and a sense of the dramatic in mak-

ing her improbable heroine. Like with TV’s “Mad Men,” it’s fun to time travel in “Cadillac” and experience the Dictaphone, cigars at the workplace, and outrage at the chairman of the board’s astronomical

$175,000 annual salary. But the most glaringly dated aspect of the more than half-century old comedy is its attitude toward the central character’s age. In her early 50s, Mrs. Partridge is referred to as an

“old lady,” and is considered a viable candidate for a retirement home in the country. Wonder how that sits with Studio’s typically senior-heavy audiences? This “Cadillac” is meticulously designed and well acted. Alex Jaeger is spot-on with the early Eisenhower era corporate drag, and James Kronzer’s classy revolving set magically transforms into various offices. Erik Trester’s sound and projections are first rate. The entire cast is very fine. Laura Dunlop and Russell Jonas are assets as the young, romantically involved office underlings. Still, there are problems: Director Paul Mullins might have goosed-up the first act — the pacing drags and the laughs suffer. McKeever’s dramatic recitation feels endless and the vintagelooking pseudo news footage featuring local TV news personalities is fun, but less would be more. Overall, the second act is faster and more amusing. While Robinette’s Partridge isn’t as memorable as her celebrated comic turn as the tone-deaf singing socialite Florence Foster Jenkins in Studio’s “Souvenir” a couple seasons back, it’s always a pleasure to watch a pro in action.

Let it ‘Snow’ Gay Men’s Chorus finds inspiration in fairy tale classic for holiday show By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO The relationship between the Evil Queen and Snow White in “Snow White and 175 Faeries,” this year’s holiday show for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, is, as you might expect, much different from the relationship the actors playing them have. The Queen, of course, wants Snow White killed, but the actors are enjoying a cross-generational camaraderie and mentorship. I don’t want to be Jay. I can be up there on the stage and I think he is a little better looking than me after all, so I just decide I have to have him killed.” In the show’s back story, the Queen is the widow of Snow White’s father. The malevolence the Queen feels toward Snow White, presented here as a young, gay romantic lead, requires some acting, Crews says. “The role here is to be threatening and the director has been very supportive about making her not just a bitchy drag queen,” he says. “She orders Snow White killed and is delighted when she thinks it’s happened. I don’t know if there’s been a time in my life when I’ve ordered somebody killed. I’d like to think I would never do that, but it’s a fun thing to do on the stage.” This show, which debuts tonight in

the Lisner Auditorium on the George Washington University campus and plays throughout the weekend, was conceived as a gay adaptation of the classic fairy tale. About 200 singers and actors will be on stage. Rehearsals began in late summer. Director John Moran, who has directed several shows for the Chorus since returning in 2005 after a lengthy hiatus, says several Chorus members conceived the show and fleshed it out together over many months. “It’s not like doing ‘My Fair Lady’ where you’re presented with a script that many professionals have worked on and all the kinks are worked out,” he says. “This arrives as a skeleton and you have to flesh it out. Sometimes it’s as simple as just making sure it makes sense.” Those involved are describing this incarnation as “a musical farce.” The evening will be divided into two

halves. The first is more of a concert, featuring seasonal favorites like “Deck the Halls,” “Sleigh Ride” and “Winter Wonderland.” A contemporary song called simply “Snow,” which Chorus member Stu Wales calls “beautiful” and “stirring,” will also be performed. Then “Snow White” comprises the second half. So what does “Snow White” have to do with Christmas? “Overall the show is called ‘Snow,’ with the first half being very holiday oriented,” says Jarred Harrison, who plays Nancy, one of the seven dwarves, re-imagined here as gay archetypes (the others are Sturdy, Cuddly, Spanky, Hose and Bitter). “Snow White fit in with the snow theme and the mini musical in the second act, it really brings a light holiday feel even though it’s not specifically holiday oriented. But it’s a fairy tale we all know and love and as with

all GMCW shows, our goal is to entertain but we also try to advocate and educate about LGBT people and who we are and what we’re about.” That will come about in a couple ways, cast members say. Harrison calls Nancy, the “diva dwarf.” “We have fabulous costumes and choreography,” he says. “It’s very boy band meets 17th Street. The dwarves represent the gym rat, the leader of the pack, the uber queen. I think the audience will really recognize their friends and perhaps even themselves. It’s really just a new and upbeat and very gay take on the original fairy tale.” Moran says it’s not all fluff, though. The show climaxes with Prince Charming proposing to Snow White, a story point that the Chorus uses to make a point about same-sex marriage. “Fairy tales always have a moral or a lesson to teach,” he says. “That’s what they do best.”

Clothing gifts for the men in your life A range of holiday ideas, from cable knit sweaters to printed briefs By TIMUR TUGBERK December is a time to be merry with friends, family, and, of course, fashion. Not only are the holidays a time to tour the area’s inventory of gifts for others, but it is also a time for local boutiques to showcase their winter collections that will fill our wardrobes for the next three months. Below are some great gift ideas for your significant others — but also for yourself. This week, I’d like to focus on a store with which we’re all familiar — that is if you happen to be gay and have lived in D.C. for any significant amount of time over the past decade. Universal Gear has led the pack of fashion boutiques popular with gay men for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I have been able to find many brands and pieces that you would never typically find outside of New York, Miami or LA. After a recent visit to the store, I was able to identify some great winter and holiday trends. I know it is very important to many of us to wear clothing that shows off a perfectly sculpted physique, but here’s a reality check: It’s December

and the high has not passed 40 degrees this week. But don’t panic, as you can still look handsome in some non-skin hugging garments. Choose a thick cable knit sweater ($150-$250) at Universal. No lads, these aren’t grandma’s designs of old, rather Ben Sherman’s creations of today. He has really mastered the art of taking functional fashion and making it look fabulous. If you’re thinking, “How am I going to show up at Nellies or Halo in a thick cable knit sweater?” then snag Ben Sherman’s Popular Blazer ($250). If you weren’t thinking I was loco for recommending a stylish shawl-neck sweater, then take a peek at Projek Raw’s faux fur-lined zip-up sweaters ($180). I am a fan of furry fashions — especially when it’s faux. You can never go wrong covering up your muscle tee or American Apparel V with a cable-knit zip-up with faux fur. These pieces make a great gift idea and keep you warm while still looking great. I discovered something else Universal now carries — something I have been wearing for years: Tattoo print briefs and undies! Cute underwear doesn’t just make for a great gift idea, it is also a fun surprise for your date, partner or even a one-night stand. For the more adventurous guy, Papi makes

scant and sexy men’s underwear. I discovered a terrific mesh, tattoo print thong ($24). At first I giggled, thinking, “Oh lordy, who would wear this?” Then I realized this would make a fun and memorable gift. It shows you can be playful and still be sexy. If you like the direction I’m going with this, but think a mesh thong may be too much, then ask to see the Ed Hardy underwear section. Here you will find some flamboyant, yet still masculine, printed briefs and boxerbriefs ($40). These are more my style, plus to spice it up you could throw on a matching trucker cap. The final item that I think more of us in D.C. could use: stylish briefcasemurses. Universal Gear sells a variety of man bags in styles to match all of our personalities. I like to find traditional styles with a contemporary flare. My choice would be Knomo Tokyo’s Wet Slim briefcase ($150). It is large enough to fit your laptop, and a T-shirt and LAX shorts for the gym later. It is stylish enough to help you stand out on the Red Line, yet classic enough to go with any job or outfit. Bags always make a great gift because if you don’t have one, you’ll use it and if you do have one, it can never hurt to have more. Tis the season, so make that list, check it twice and head to Universal Gear and get shopping.
