Day to day account in performing Hajj BRIEF EXPLANATION ON ITS PERFORMANCE from the 7th ZulHijjah onwards to time of return of Pilgrims from Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina

On the 8 ZulHijjah th

Pilgrims to prepare for Hajj on this Day as they would have to leave Makkah for Mina and to later proceed to Arafah. It is Sunnah to take a bath. Those performing Hajj Tamattu’ has to enter into Ihram for Hajj, in their hotel room.

Intention for Hajj (for those doing Tamattu’) Allaa-humma inni uree-dul-Hajja fa-yas-sir-hu li wa taqab-bal-hu min-ni, nawai-tul Hajja wa aHramtu bihi mukh-lisan lillaahi ta’ala. O Allah! I desire to perform the Hajj, so make it easy for me and accept it on my behalf. I hereby make the intention for Hajj and enter into its state of Ihram, sincerely for the sake of Allah the Most High.

Intention for Hajj (for those doing Tamattu’) Allaa-humma inni uree-dul-Hajja fa-yas-sir-hu li wa taqab-bal-hu min-ni, nawai-tul Hajja wa aHramtu bihi mukh-lisan lillaahi ta’ala. O Allah! • “Here I am O Allah! Here I am ! Here I am, for there is no one who is Your partner (associate), here I am! Surely, all praise and blessings are Yours (alone) and the dominion. You are (One) without companion.” 6

AFTER MAKING THE INTENTION TO RECITE THE ‘TALBIYYAH’

Setting out towards ‘Arafat Pilgrims fervently and with passion chant the Talbiyyah, constantly engages in Zikr, istighfar, Solawat upon the Prophet s.a.w. fully conscious of being grateful that Allah has granted Audience at this greatest gathering on the Day and on the plains of Arafah.

Meaning of the Supplication O Allah! Make this day the best of my days, and make me nearer to Thy favours and far away from Thy Wrath, O Allah! Towards Thee I turn, and in Thee have I placed my trust, and I intend to approach Thy countenance (seeking Thy attention), so forgive my sins and accept my Hajj, and have mercy on me, and do not deprive me (of Thy favours), and bless me in my journey, and fulfill my needs (both physical and spiritual) in Arafat, for Thou hast Power over all things.

Constantly Recite this Zikr (Meaning of the recitation and the Zikr in Arabic below) Laa-ilaa-ha il-lallaahu waH-da-huu laa-sharee-kalah, lahul-mul-ku walahul-Hamdu, yuH-yii wa-yumeetu wa-huwa hay-yu laayamuutu bi-yadikal khayr, wa-huwa ‘alaa kul-li shay-’in Qadeer. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and He has no partner. To Him alone is the sovereignty and to Him the Praise. It is He who gives life and death, and He alone is Ever-living Who never dies, and all Goodness in His Hands for over all things He has Power.

Recite this when you see Jabal Rahmah at Arafat Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, walil-laahil-Hamd, Sub-Haa-nallaahi wal-Hamdulil-laahi wa-laa-ilaaha il-lallaahu wallaahu akbar. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all Praises belongs to Allah, Glory be to Allah and all the Praises and there is none to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

YOU MAY RECITE THIS DU’A “Allaahum-magh-firlee wa-tub -’alay-ya wa a’-tinii su’-li wawaj-jih liyal-khay-ra ay-na-maa ta-wajjah-tu. Sub-Haanallaahi wal-Hamdulil-laahi wa-laailaa-ha il-lallaahu wa-Allaahu akbar. “

• “O Allah! Forgive me, accept my penitence and reward me with what I have sought and in whichever direction I proceed, turn it all into Goodness. Glory be to Allah and all the Praises belongs to Allah, and there is none to be worshipped except Allah and Allah is the Greatest..” 12

The 9th ZulHijjah –the Day of Arafat

You may prepare for this by taking a bath in the morning in Arafat by carefully flushing water over yourself (careful not to breach rules of Ihram). At noon, the observance of the standing in Arafat begins. There will be Sermon read out before performance of Zuhrcombine with ‘Asr. After which pilgrims fervently and with passion chant the Talbiyyah, constantly engages in Zikr, istighfar, Solawat upon the Prophet s.a.w. fully conscious of being grateful that Allah has granted Audience at this greatest gathering on the Day and on the plains of Arafah. This is the best day to supplicate, therefore do not waste it – include welfare of everybody dear to you and the rest of the Muslims too in your supplication.

YOU MAY RECITE THIS DU’A WHICH THE PROPHET HAD DONE “Laa-ilaaha illallaahu waHdahuu laa-sharee-kalah. Lahulmulku wa-lahulhamd. Allaahummah-dinii bilhudaa, wa-naqqinee bit-taqwaa, wagh-firlee fil-aa-khi-ra-tee wal-uu-laa “ ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail

• “None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, He is One without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all Praise is due to Him. O Allah! Keep me steadfast on Thy Guidance. Purify me through Taqwa (piety) and forgive me in this world and the next.” 14

IN ONE HADITH THE PROPHET SAID THAT THE BEST OF ZIKR IS: “Laa-ilaaha illallaahu waHdahuu laa-sharee-kalah. Lahulmulku wa-lahulhamd. Wa-huwa ‘alaa kul-li shayin-Qadeer”

Moving on towards Muzdalifah At sunset, pilgrims begin to move towards Muzdalifah. Continue chanting Talbiyah, Takbir, Tahlil and TaHmid. Prayers for Maghrib and Isha’ is to be combined (Jama’). At Muzdalifah, apart from picking pebbles in preparation for the rites of stoning, spent time in prayer, supplication, zikr etc. during this night which is very auspicious.

ONE OF THE DU’A WHICH YOU MAY RECITE ON THE WAY IS: “Allaa-humma ilay -ka afadw-tu, wa min ‘azaa-bika ashfaq-tu, wa-ilayka raghibtu wa min sakha-tika ro-hib-tu, faq-bil nus-kee waa’ -zeem aj-ree wataqab-bal tawbatee, war-Ham tadwar-ru-ee, was-tajib du-’aa-ee, wa a’- ti-nee su-aa-lee. • “O Allah! I have come unto Thee and am apprehensive of Thy punishment, and I approach Thee and am afraid of Thy anger, so accept my rites (of Hajj) and reward me greatly, and accept my repentance and have Mercy on me and accept my supplications, and all my prayers and fulfill for me all my requests. O the Most Merciful of the Merciful.”

Meaning of the Supplication • O Allah! This is a gathering in Thy presence and I ask Thee to give me all goodness for none except Thee can. O Allah! Lord of Mash-aril-Haram, Lord of Zam-zam and Maqam (Of Ibrahim), Lord of Bay-til-Haram, and Lord of Great Miracles! I ask Thee to convey to the soul of our Leader Muhammad, the best Salutation and Peace, and reform for me my offspring (children), and my religion, and expand for me my breast and cleanse my heart, and bestow on me the goodness which I ask You to collect in my heart, and save me from all evil, for Thou art the Guardian and Thou hast Power over all things.

DURING THIS NIGHT, RECITE THIS DU’A AMONGST OTHERS:

“Allaa-humma in-nii • as-aluka an-tar-zuqa-nee haa-dzalma-kaan ja-waa-mi’al-khayri- kul-lihi, wa-an tasw-rifa –’an-nis-suu-a kullahu, fa-in-nahuu laa-yaf- ’alu dzaalika ghay-ruka walaa ya-juu-du bihi illaa an-ta”

“O Allah! I implore Thee to give me in this sacred place a collection of every Goodness, and take away from me every evil, for none can do this except You, and none can forgive except You.” 19

IN THE MORNING AT MUZDALIFAH AFTER FAJR, TO OFFER SALUTAIONS (SALAWAT UPON THE PROPHET (s.a.w.) THUS: “Allaa-humma baligh-ruu-Ha Muhammadin min-naattaHiy-yata wa-salaa ma wa-ad-khilnaa daa - ras-salaam. Yaa dzalJalaa- li wal - ikraam” ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail

• “O Allah! Convey from us, to the Soul of Prophet Muhammad, our Salutation and greetings, and make us to enter paradise, O Lord of Majesty and Honour ” 20

Entering Mina after sunrise on the 10th Zulhijjah

From Muzdalifah, after sunrise pilgrims will make their ways into Mina. The duty on this day at Mina will be to head for Jamra-alAqabah at which place pilgrim will perform the stoning with seven pebbles picked at Muzdalifah. Today the stoning is only at Jamra-al-Aqaba. Sacrifice of animals will also be done here (for those performing Haj Tamattu’ and Qiran it is Wajib, but for Ifrad it is MustaHab). After this they can proceed to perform the 1st Tahallul thus freeing them from the constrain of Ihram (except sexual intercourse).

THE DU’A ON REACHING MINA ON THE 10TH ZULHIJJAH: “Allaa-humma haadzihi Minaa, qadataitu-haa, wa ana ‘abduka wab-nu ‘abdika as-aluka an tamun-na ‘alay-ya bimaa manan-ta bihi ‘alaa aw-liyaa-ika. Allaahumma in-ni a-’udzubika minal-hirmaani wal-musee-bati fi-deeni yaa ArHamar-Raa-Himeen. Al-Hamdu-lillaa-hilladzii ab-laghani saaliman mu-’aa-fiya ” ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail

• “O Allah! This is Mina. I have reached it as Thy servant, and the son of Thy servant. I ask that You bestow upon me that which You bestow upon Thy favourites (“Awliya” – i.e. saints). O Allah I seek refuge in You from deprivation and calamity in the religion, O the Most Merciful of the Merciful! All Praise is due to Allah Who made me reach this place safe and sound.

• “In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest! I cast these pebbles against Satan and all his army.”

WHEN CASTING THE PEBBLE, TO RECITE THE FOLLOWING: “Bis-millaah, Allaahu-Akbar, rajman-lish-shay-taana wa-hizbi ”

• “In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest! I cast these pebbles against Satan and all his army.”

After which recite this du’a: “Allaahum-maj-’al-hu Haj-janmab-ru-ra wa- Sa’- yan mash-kuu-ra wa-dzam- banm-magh-fuu-ra” O Allah! Make my Haj approved by You, accord Your appreciation to my struggle and forgive me all my sins.” ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail

After offering Sacrifice, pilgrims can perform 1st Tahallul. Pilgrims may shortened hair or shave head (for men), and thus free himself/herself from all constrains of Ihram (except sexual intercourse). Bathing, perfuming oneself, changing into stitched clothes etc. are now permissible.

Spending the days & nights in Mina. Pilgrims are required to stay the Nights in Mina and perform Rami (stoning) of the 3 Jamrat (“Ula, Wusta and ‘Aqabah) on the 11th, 12th and /or 13th – stoning begins at Zuhur time, in these Days called “Yaum-an-Nahar” - and can be done until dawn. Solat Fardh can be performed, ‘Tamam’ (full and not shortened). Takbir, Tahlil, Tahmid are recited much here (chanting of Talbiyyah has ceased the moment pilgrim starts to stone Jamra -al-‘Aqaba, on the 10th). Perform Zikr, wird, Qur’anic recitation and make supplications as much as possible in this place. Avoid as much as possible, useless pursuits, worldly conversations or self-glorification.

Stoning the 3 Jamrat during the stay in Mina Pilgrims are required to stay the Nights in Mina and perform Rami (stoning) of the 3 Jamrat (“Ula, Wusta and ‘Aqabah) on the 11th, 12th and /or 13th – stoning begins at Zuhur time, in these Days called “Yaum-an-Nahar” - and can be done until dawn for each day. Start at Jamra-al-Ula – after which stay at by the side to make du’a for a duration. Then, proceed to do same at Jamra-al-Wusta – after which stay by side to make du’a for a duration. Then proceed to do same at Jamra-al-”Aqabah – after which, do not stay to read du’a for the Prophet did not do so. During the whole process, always engage much chanting of Takbir, Tahlil, Tahmid, Istighfar, and du’a for yourselves, your loved ones, friends and for Muslims in general. You may visit Masjid Khayf situated here in Mina.

The return to Makkah from Mina, either on the 12th or 13th of Zulhijjah. Pilgrims who wish to leave on the 12th must do so before sundown (referred to as “Nafara awwal”), if not they have to remain and return only the evening 13th of Zulhijjah (called “Nafara Thaani”). In Makkah the remaining Rukun for Haj has to be completed and thus completely freeing the pilgrim from the Rites of Hajj. These are the Tawaf-Fard (Tawaf Hajj) sometimes also referred to as Tawaf Ifaadah or Tawaf Ziyaarah – as well as to perform Sa-’ie for Hajj

Perform Tawaf Haj Followed by Sa-’e for Hajj and after which perform 2nd tahallul – thus freeing oneself completely from all the constrains of Ihram ©2005ZhulkefleeHjIsmail

While remaining in Makkah, one may perform “umrah” by going out to Tana-im or Ja’rana or Hudaybiyah for entering into state of Ihram for Umrah.
