Lesson Plan – Day 9 (Thursday) Goals Students will think about the presentation portion of the portfolio by experimenting with various genres. They will make a decision on what genre they feel best suits their research based on thinking about Form = Audience + Purpose. Rationale Students have continued to think about how different genres make different meanings for multiple audiences. The presentation aspect of the portfolio also asks them to make a decision based on who their audience is and what information they need to present. This lesson will help them decide on a genre and also give them a brief tutorial through some more difficult presentation genres. Assessments • Discussion of different presentation genres • Start of their presentation genre in class • Written statement of what type of genre they are using for their presentation Standards

Objectives Students will be able to: • Experiment with different genres of presentation. • Choose which genre best suits their research and overall portfolio. Tasks 1. Research Update 2 is due at the beginning of class. Students should now have at least eight sources and a brief summary of what they are learning. 2. Give students the handout for the presentation aspect of the project. Go over in detail each point and clarify any questions. 3. Remind students of our conversations about Form = Audience + Purpose. Ask if they know what the purpose of the presentation is. 4. Talk about what different modes of presentation mean to the audience. Why might it be a good idea to make a movie versus another mode?, etc. 5. Give a short tutorial on how to use movie making applications, Microsoft Publisher, and PowerPoint. Note that the tutorials can also be found online at the provided websites. 6. Students will be allowed to use laptops to experiment with the various modes of presentation for the rest of the class time. Encourage them to try out

different ones even if they think they want to go with a certain mode. 7. Walk around and answer any questions about the applications. Note any frustrations and address them as needed to the class or any students who might be using the same application. 8. At the end of the hour, have the students submit a slip of paper stating which mode of presentation they would like to use to better plan for presentation day time constraints. 9. Remind students that portfolio Artifact 1 is due tomorrow at the beginning of class. Materials • • • • To-Do List • •
