What is material master record? It is a record consists of completer information of a specific material It may consists of  

Material Name Base Unit of Measure Alternate unit of measure Material Number Material type Material Group Gross Weight Net weight Purchase group Price Control indicator Valuation class Price of the material

MATERIAL NUMBER 

Why Material Number is required for material master ?  To

uniquely identify a specific record among the other records  To classify a group of materials

MATERIAL NUMBER 

The default length of the material is 18  How

ever you can change the length of the material number  Leading zeros can be assigned during printing  Required template for material number can be assigned

MATERIAL NAME Every material will have some name to identify and call  In SAP Material master record you can enter a material name with 40 character length with alphabetic, numeral and special characters 

BASE UNIT OF MEASURE Every material in the universe will be measured with certain measurement  Our scientists named different unit of measurements to different materials  Ex: Milk – in liters, Wire in meters 

MATERIAL TYPE Material categorized based on its attributes (purpose) can be called as Material Type  SAP Standard Material Types are 

ROH – Raw Material  HALB – Semi-finished product  FERT – Finished Product  HAWA – Trading Materials  ERSA – Spare Parts  Like there are around 37 material types have been defined by the SAP 

MATERIAL GROUP Materials categorized based on its characters can be called as Material group  Ex: Plastic group 

group  Rubber group  Liquids group  Glass Group

PURCHASE GROUP An individual or a group of people who are responsible to take care of procuring activity of a material can be called as Purchase Group or Buyer group  Ex: 

is a purchase group  TPG is a Purchase Group

PRICE INDICATOR It is an indicator which controls the system to calculate the price of the material  There are two types of Price control indicators 

VALUATION CLASS It is a sub category to each material type in Accounts  It is related to A/c category reference  SAP std. Valuation classes for Raw material are 

 3000,

3001,3002,3002,3003  However you can create your own valuation classes also

PRICE OF THE MATERIAL It is an approximate price or a budgetary price  Enter price in material master record which is help full during sub contract scenario and initial stock entries concept 
