OPENING NUMBER O
pening day is a special day. The smack of a baseball popping into a catcher’s mitt. The anticipation that this season is the one. We asked some of the Rangers about their best opening-day memories.
AWARDS WATCH Early AL MVP pick: David Ortiz, Red Sox Ortiz, perhaps the most feared clutch hitter in the majors, will stroke a handful of walk-off hits in August and September, giving him a slight edge over Cleveland’s Grady Sizemore. DMN

SECOND BASEMAN I was facing Curt Schilling, opening day, my rookie year [last season]. It was a pretty special one. I had family and friends there and ended up getting a hit my first at bat. It was definitely a good opening day for me. I’ll remember that forever.
STARTING PITCHER Last year [as a member of the White Sox] will probably be the best for a long time. It was the only opening-day roster I made. Then I ended up throwing five innings of relief after a rain delay to get the win. I got the first win of the season last year.
FIRST BASEMAN Best opening days were ’04 and ’05. I hit home runs on opening day. Talk about starting your season right. It’s always nice to hit a home run on opening day and get yourself going for the season. Every opening day has been good to me.
GERALD LAIRD CATCHER This year would be my best because I’m starting and opening up in my hometown in Anaheim. That’s going to be a great moment. I grew up five minutes from the stadium and now I’m opening-day catcher, starting for the Rangers against my hometown team.
BRAD WILKERSON
KEVIN MILLWOOD STARTING PITCHER The best would be my first opening-day start in Philadelphia [2003], where I beat the Marlins. But my worst would be last year’s, against Boston. [Millwood barely made it through five innings in a 7-3 loss.]
Soggy Coolers Spoiling Your Race Weekend?
OUTFIELDER My best memory would be my first opening day [playing for Montreal], when I was in the starting lineup … and out in front of the fans. To be introduced as a starter for a big league club, that was my most memorable opening day.
TODAY’S GAME Starters: Red Sox (Tim Wakefield, 7-11, 4.63 ERA last season) at Rangers (Robinson Tejeda, 5-5, 4.28) Time, TV: 1:05 p.m., Channel 4 Tickets: Only standing-room tickets remain. First pitch: Future NFL Hall of Famer and ex-Cowboy Michael Irvin will do the honors. National anthem: The Biggest Choir in the Great State of Texas, accompanied by the Air Force Band of the West, will perform.

TRIBE CAN HIT ’EM
A BRAVE QUEST
In a Central Division loaded with good pitching, the Indians’ strength is their bashing lineup. Can DH Travis Hafner, center fielder Grady Sizemore, catcher Victor Martinez and new second baseman Josh Barfield make up for a pitching deficiency — relative to the rest of the division?
Can Braves manager Bobby Cox open his eyes in the ninth inning? The Braves ranked last in NL save percentage (.567) last season and made bullpen improvement an off-season priority. They re-signed Bob Wickman and traded for Mike Williams and Rafael Soriano.

The Cardinals are counting on Kip Wells as their No. 2 starter and a pair of converted relievers (Adam Wainwright and Braden Looper) to round out the rotation until Mark Mulder returns (midseason at the earliest). Can the Tigers repeat as AL champs? The overwhelming answer seems to be yes. Even with starting pitcher Kenny Rogers out until July, they seem to have enough pitching. And they added the necessary big bat they needed from Gary Sheffield.
Can DH Jason Kubel establish himself as the Twins’ next rising hitting star, joining catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau? They may need more slugging since the rotation is going to be peppered with unproven pitchers such as Boof Bonser and Matt Garza. DMN

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The hop is back. And we’re not talking bunny hops. These are the in-love-with-life hops that were Sammy Sosa’s trademark when he was the toast of Chicago. Sosa’s super-sized body and strength were essential for three consecutive 60home run seasons with the Cubs, but the driving force was the unconditional love the team and its fans showered on him. That’s why the reversal of opinion after the corkedbat incident in 2003 was as devastating to his career as any of the nagging injuries that followed. He has been a changed
man this spring with the Rangers, and the major reason is that he is playing for men who believe in him. Sosa had a solid spring, batting .408 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. Rangers manager Ron Washington and hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo are unconditionally in Sosa’s corner. “I hear scouts saying this and that. They don’t know. They don’t know what is going on with his work ethic,” Jaramillo said. “I know what Sammy Sosa can do, and that’s all I care about. ... He’s getting his confidence back. That’s the main thing.” McClatchy-Tribune

SURPRISE, Ariz. — From where does this whole notion spring that Ron Washington is going to be a “players’ manager,” as he boldly stated not 30 minutes into his introduction as the Rangers’ manager? Washington’s style was formed wholly from his interaction with others. As a player in the Kansas City Royals Baseball Academy, he was grounded in the execution of fundamentals. As a big leaguer for parts of 12 seasons, he was touched by teammates as diverse as the studious Randy Bush, now a Chicago Cubs assistant general manager, to the late Kirby Puckett, who played with exuberance rarely seen. He played for managers who stuck by their starting
lineups without hesitation and for others who believed the key to getting everything out of a team was to get everybody involved. Strategically, he favors pressuring teams with steals and bunts and speed. But he has also seen the benefits of Oakland’s approach (his last stop): selective at the plate and conservative on the base paths. “There have just been so many people who have said stuff and done stuff that sticks with you,” Washington said. “People who praised you, who were direct with you but never in a mean way. People who treated you like a professional. People who told you what you had to get better and pushed you.” DMN

young duo. If either McCarthy or Tejeda end up with 30 starts, it will be a dramatic change from the recent past. If they both end up with 30, well, it will be the dawn of a wholly new era. Tejeda got 14 starts last year, though they hardly came in succession. It took three different stints in the majors for him to compile them.
“Commitment comes through performance,” manager Ron Washington said. “But it takes more than one, two or three performances. They will get every opportunity to do it. We are not going to panic after one or two bad starts. If they run into trouble, we will give them the chance to correct it. If they don’t correct it, at least we’ll have found DMN out for sure.”
