Congregation Shearith Israel New Building, New York, New York
Central Park West elevation
After completing the rst phase of restoration of Congregation Shearith Israel, an 1897 Beaux Arts synagogue on the Upper West Side overlooking Central Park, STA is currently involved in the design of a new building on the adjacent vacant lot. The proposed structure will incorporate up to 10 additional market-rate residential oors above a new 4-story community house for the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. The building will provide handicapped access to all levels of the synagogue through a new entrance on 70th Street. In conjunction with Platt Byard Dovell White Architects, STA is working closely with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure that the new building will be consistent with the historic fabric of the neighboring community. The approval process also involves a series of presentations to community and arts organizations and government ofcials.
