CRESTED CRANES CAN OFFER HOUSEHOLD DEFENCE IN SOME COMMUNITIES IN UGANDA The crested crane is Uganda’s national bird. It is slowly getting extinct unless urgent interventions are instituted. Loss of its natural breeding habitats is probably one of the major reasons for this. I need to team up with interested individuals to develop strategies and proposals on how to save this precious and beautiful bird. Another possible cause of the population decline could be due to misuse of the birds as household guards (see the photos below):
