Solar Break through……

Why Solar Power Plant…. vNot to mention Importance of Solar Energy…. vWe could have chosen Nano, Ipod or any such contemporary “ Creative Product ”

How many of you remember him???

Now……

If you think You can………. • Before unleashing the magic lets introduce the man behind it… • Solar man S P Gon Chaudhuri managing director of the West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation. • Worked in renewable energy specially solar energy field for more than 27 years now • Won many prizes, one among them is Ashden Award popularly known as 'Green Oscars' • This Project is his dream project

What is this project : v Abandoned Thermal Power Plant is Converted Into Solar Unit. v WHERE: Jamuria (Raniganj), 210 km from Kolkata v CAPACITY: 2 MW v COMPRISING: 9,000 crystalline type solar modules of 230 watt each. v PRODUCTION: 3 million units of electricity a year, enough to light up 2,000 rural or 500 urban households. v ANNUAL REVENUE: Rs 4.8 crore

Why so much Fuss:

• It will save 7 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emission a day. • First in world to transform polluting thermal power unit into zero carbon emission solar unit. • First In India to cross megawatt threshold • First significant climate-responsive project in South Asia

What else…. The project will play a crucial role for: • In achieving the Solar Mission of 15,000 MW under Prime Minister Climate Action Plan. • Planning commision prediction of 1.5 lakh MW energy deficit by 2030 which only solar can meet. • Make way for generation of 8 lakh MW by utilizing wastelands across the country. • Providing companies the confidence to invest in solar power. • Demonstrates the country’s intent and ability to be climate responsive in the energy sector

Journey was never easy…. •Longer break-even period except Nuclear energy. •High capital investment. •Mass producing solar power is cost prohibitive. •Capital investment in a solar plant is Rs 15-18 crore per mega watt — four times that of thermal energy. •Technology was not efficient. •Low Private Sector Interest •Other Difficulties include climate suitability, availablity of land and Funds for project.

Creativity the way out….. Nano technology is the answer. • S P Gon was invited to the laboratory in Catholic University, Virginia by US department of energy for research in Space sector. • Where he observed how Nano technology is used to provide solar energy to empower space satellites. OUT OF BOX THINKING • He thought why can’t he use the same technology for mass production of solar energy.

Nano technology solar panels

How it works…..

• Printing a material's surface with tiny nanoantennae which capture infra-red radiation at an 80% efficiency • It do so even long after dusk has engulfed the surroundings. • Each antenna comes with a small capacitor or AC/DC converter in order to capture those electrons which are then turned into electricity.

Hard work always bear sweet fruits…..

• Capital cost of solar power had become 40% lower than thermal. • Efficiency doubled. • Due to low cost mass production of solar energy is now possible. • Production can happen at night also. • Open doors for private sector. • Many of solar projects now become viable.
