This Costume jewelry design Class focused on three distinct yet interconnected projects. The first part composed of conceptualizing and making an Art installation of objects that reflects a theme. The forms, materials, textures all relate to a story that inspires a piece of Costume jewelry. This was the second component of the project and every student conceived and crafted a unique piece of Jewelry. This was not necessarily a piece that is practical for everyday wear but rather an artistic expression that falls more with in the realm of wearable art. The final project was to design and prepare illustrations for a collection of wearable Jewelry pieces that are suitable for mass manufacture and could be sold in retail stores.

The first stage of costume jewellery deals in conceptualization and making of an art installation. This was a group process which involves several stages. They are as follows:  Different Materials and objects were collected from the scraps, in and around the college campus, which were displayed.  Segregation of theses objects were done according to their colour, form and material.  Two distinct conclusion were drawn of what these segregated objects can be related to and what theme can be build up on them. (Example: abundant factory and childhood)  Childhood theme was finalized.  Brain Storming was done as a stage to explore the theme.  More objects were being collected, which can be interlinked with that of previous ones.  A story line was being created, as a process to explain the theme in a more clarified manner.  Finally all these ideas were conceptualized together, and an art installation was prepared.

This was an individual assignment in which taking the inspiration from the art installation prepared in the previous step, a unique piece of jewellery was to designed and constructed. The parameters for the preparation were: The jewellery piece should strongly reflect the theme at the end of construction.  The form, material and texture should chosen in a manner as to relate the theme.  The piece should not necessarily be a practical piece, which could be wear in daily life.  It should depict art expression. Construction Process  Various sketches were made and doodling was done to design the art form. (attached next pages )  One of them was finalized.  Material was decided of which the jewellery had to be constructed. Which were brass rods and black cords.  Two objects were to be made out of brass which were a chair and a cup. Chair Brass rod was cut equally according to the desired size. A chair was made out of them using the soldering method.  Proper filing and sand paper scrubbing was done to make it edges and surface smooth .  Buffing tools were also used to clear the unfinished part. Cup  Brass sheet was being cut of a desired size using shear cutter,  A cylinder was formed.  It was then domed upwards from one side and downwards from another side, using doming tools.  Doming was done till the shape of the cup has been achieved.  Lower portion of the cup was caped by soldering a circular brass sheet.  Handle was cut according to the size and shape of the cup, which was later soldered.  Finally the chair and cup was soldered together at per design.

The module costume jewellery collection was a great learning, as motivated in many a ways, the various assignment we did under this taught me the value of materials and scraps present in the environment. It tells every object in this world has some potential in itself, and jewellery can me made out of them. The module also taught me to work in a processed manner and in stages, as to bring a fair result and better outcome.
