Graves 1 Taliya Graves Mr.Phillips English 3 28 February 2019 Black History Month Does anyone know what happened to the celebration of black history month? African-American history is important and history wouldn't be complete without it but somehow it silently disappeared like a toddler being mischievous. It wasn't long ago when we had one month to celebrate and be reminded about how African-Americans contributed to America. The achievements and accomplishments of our ancestors should be recognized and taught. Having a set time every year would allow us to pause and commemorate them instead of sweeping their successes under the rug. Like Angela Davis once said "we have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society." When I attended elementary and middle school, I remember the embodiment of black history month. My excitement started growing in January because I knew in February, AfricanAmericans would have a moment where they felt embraced. I felt like a kid in a candy store overcome with excitement about those sugary treats. Assemblies and plays, now non-existent, made me feel special and honored. I often ask myself, are African-Americans seen as important? As time goes on, we'll be learning less and less about our history. Even now students don't see the importance of the observance because we aren't learning about its significance. If we stop talking about it, eventually it will die off. People may ask why we can't celebrate all races but I believe we do everyday. It's important to have this month of celebration because many feel like we haven't been remembered or given the credit we deserve for our deeds to America in our history books.

Graves 2 Schools may complain about not having enough time to produce a play or put on activities so they should set aside time in their schedules to have them. If they can make time to perform” The Crucible” or “The Great Gatsby(books read in English)”, they can host plays about Harriet Tubman or Martin Luther King Jr. A great solution would be to bring black history month back to all schools but allowing black history month back in school is like allowing a slave to be free in 1645; unlikely to happen. Exclusion is not fair because we celebrate non-African American events all year long. If our celebration is taken away then our stories die and become forgotten. So, do you think black history month should be celebrated in schools?
