MAE 640 – Continuum Mechanics Project – Summer II, 2009 A company manufactures a12’ x 12’ sheet of 4” thick elastic material. The sheets are used in high temperature applications up to 1500° C. Temperature is increased and decreased slowly and the sheets are exposed to temperatures of 0° C - 1500oC. To improve the performance of the sheets the company wishes to apply an elastic film. The deposited film may include pores. Using your knowledge of continuum mechanics write a three page report (typed and including diagrams) to advise them on the maximum thickness of the film – your advice must be clearly supported by a solid mechanics model. Clearly describe the assumptions you have made and the essential parts of the models you have used. Sheet Modulus – 208 GPa Poisson’s ratio – 0.28 CTE – 17.2 microstrain/Kelvin Film Modulus – 450 GPa Poisson’s ratio – 0.17 CTE – 4.0 microstrain/Kelvin
