Methodist Girls’ School 3rd Regional Youth Conference “Blue is the New Green” Conserving Our Waters

10 – 11 July 2009 ____________________________________________________________________________ CONFERENCE BRIEF The 3rd Methodist Girls’ School Regional Youth Conference (MGS-RYC) is organised in response to a growing perception that our youth need to be empowered to make a difference to the world in which they live and which they will inherit. This year’s MGS-RYC is held from Friday 10 July to Saturday 11 July 2009 and serves as a platform for young leaders to share their concerns for the world, investigate current problems and find solutions to some of these problems. It provides an avenue for our future leaders, who come from diverse backgrounds, to interact with one another and appreciate the cultural diversity in the region. It hopes to raise the awareness that despite the differences in race and culture, we are all living in essentially the same world where we need to work together to resolve our collective problems. The call to action in a world fraught with limited resources has always been there, but never as urgent as now in the 21st century. “Blue is the New Green” is MGS-RYC’s response to that call. It wasn’t too long ago when we were all going green in conserving the environment, protecting the wild and battling pollution. Today, plagued by constant climate change, and wary of the rapid disappearance of clean water supplies, we are blue. And we have to go blue if we want to live in peace and fulfillment; we must keep the skies and the seas blue – shining, shimmering, safe! Through the conference, participants will be inspired by speakers who are passionate about making a difference in the world and who take an interest in the potential of our youth. Participants have opportunities to explore their roles as youth leaders who in their current capacity could do something to ensure that the water problems the world faces do not become a cause for tension but are a ’catalyst for co-operation’. It is estimated that by 2025 two-thirds of the world’s population is likely to live in countries with moderate or severe water shortages. Water sustains life. Our youth must address the challenges and investigate the opportunities to conserve the environment, especially clean, cool water, and celebrate the achievements of Singapore in finding sustainable solutions to the world’s water problems. They must act today to prevent more and more people from dying each year from water-related diseases and to remove competition and conflicts over water resources. Objectives of Conference

To provide a platform for participants to share their thoughts and ideas as they attempt to address issues pertaining to water and sustainable development

To empower young leaders that they may understand the significance of their roles in the world they inherit

To provide an avenue for our youth to gain a deeper understanding of the water crisis in the world and its disastrous consequences for the people, especially the poor and the young Page 1 of 2
