1. Windows – an operating system that uses Graphical User Interface (GUI) 2. Cold booting – the process of turning on the computer directly from the power source 3. Warm booting – the process of restarting the computer from the start menu or by using: ctrl + alt + del 4. Startup screen – a screen that consists of the desktop, icons, and toolbar(s) 5. Desktop – the total area of the screen where all work is performed 6. Icons – pictorial representations of programs, files, or documents; icons can be opened by being double clicked 7. Taskbar – a bar used to perform various tasks and it provides access to the computer because it houses the START button 8. Shutdown – the SHUT DOWN button is used to turn off the computer properly 9. Help – the HELP menu displays various options for using or troubleshooting the computer 10. Find – the FIND menu allows you to locate files, folders, or other computers in a network. 11. Documents – the DOCUMENTS menu displays 15 of the most recently accessed files and allows you to open recently used files easily 12. Programs – the PROGRAMS menu contains most of the software on a computer 13. Launch – to activate or run a program 14. Check mark – a mark that indicates that a menu option is currently active 15. Shortcut – a link to a document, file, or program on a computer 16. Folder – a directory of files (usually represented by a yellow icon) 17. Maximize – to increase the size of a window 18. Minimize – to reduce a window to an icon on the taskbar 19. Restore – to return a window to its original size 20. Refresh – to return the screen to its previous state 21. Title bar – a blue bar at the top of a window that displays the name of the program, the name of the file, and it consists of 3 buttons: close, minimize, and maximize/restore 22. Menu bar – a bar that contains the menu of the active application 23. Dropdown menu – the sub-menu that comes from a menu on the menu bar 24. Status bar – a bar that displays information on the status of the active file or document 25. Ruler – used to guide the position of document entries such as text or objects. There are two rulers on a screen, one horizontal, and one vertical 26. Alt – used to activate hot keys by holding it down and selecting the underlined letter of the menu option (example: ALT + I used to select the Insert menu) 27. Arrow keys – consist of the ← left, ↓ down, → right, and ↑ up 28. Backspace – used to a character one space back 29. Caps lock – used to type capital letters 30. Delete – used to delete a character or a selected word or words 31. End – used to move the cursor to the end of a line 32. Enter – used to execute a command 33. Esc – used to cancel a previous action 34. Home – used to move the cursor to the beginning of a line

35. Insert – used to insert or type over a character 36. Num lock – controls the use of the numeric keypad (when it is off, the numeric keypad cannot be used) 37. Page down – used to move down, one page at a time 38. Page up – used to move up, one page at a time 39. Print screen – used to copy the contents of the screen onto the clipboard 40. Scroll lock – used to prevent scrolling in an electronic spreadsheet 41. Shift – when combined with other keys it is used to make two entries 42. Space bar – used to type in an empty space 43. Tab – used to indent text entries
