CARLISLE CITY 1-1 WINDSCALE PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY @ THE SHEEPMOUNT SATURDAY 19th JULY 2008 City lined up for their second pre-season friendly against Wearside League opponents Windscale. The visitors created a couple of early chances, and City keeper Lindsay had to save with his knees after 10 minutes, before using his feet to repel another shot from the Windscale left. City’s first real opportunity saw Kelleher stretching at the back post but not quite being able to turn the ball into the net. A bout of pushing and shoving between Cumersky and a Windscale player saw referee Steven Poole invoke an unofficial “sinbin”, and Cumersky was given ten minutes to cool off. In the 35th minute, a thunderous Barclay shot brought a fine save from the visiting keeper, at the expense of a corner. Five minutes before half-time, City took the lead. Kelleher (pictured below) showed neat skill to drag the ball around his marker before hammering into the top corner.

The lead was kept until half-time but Windscale came close to an equaliser early in the second half when a shot from a free-kick just missed the target. City replaced Burton with Hodgson and the newly-arrived substitute came close with a shot from 15 yards. After 65 minutes, Hodgson was again involved as he sent Kelleher running free, but his attempt for a second goal was just too high. Two minutes later, Windscale equalised when Lindsay dived full length to clear a shot, but was unable to keep out the headed rebound. Windscale possibly finished the stronger side and a clever “Teddy Sheringham” corner routine saw a vicious shot from the edge of the area cleared off the City line.

The game was a useful work-out for both sides with players gaining more match sharpness. TEAM- Lindsay, Cherry, Barclay, Ruddick, Foster, Hubner, Cumersky, Coulthard, Kelleher, Wood, Burton. Subs- Hodgson, Bell, McGarry, Mounsey, Simpson, Watson
