NOTES OF GUIDANCE Activity 1 – Identify and design PFD and P&ID for the selected process plant. Learning outcome 1. Drawthe block flow diagrams for the selected chemical product. 2. Identify the selected process for the chosen process plant. 3. Draw the PFD for the process. 4. Draw the P&ID for the process. Scenario The research and development group at FKK Chemicals Company worked out a way to produce chemical product (example: benzene). Process engineers assigned to work with the development group have pieced together a continuous process for making FKK in commercial quantities and have tested key parts of it. This work involved hundreds of block flow diagrams. Based on information derived from these block flow diagrams, a decision was made to proceed with this process. Example: For the production of benzene, there are a few of process involved by using various methods such as a) b) c) d)

Catalytic reforming Toluene hydrodealkylation Toluene disproportionation Steam cracking

Therefore, the research and development group need to decide the best process based on their advantages and disadvantages by considering various factors such as raw material, selectivity, general cost and safety issues. (Notes: the lecturer can decide other chemical product to perform this task) A process engineering team from FKK’s central office carries out the detailed process calculations, material and energy balances, equipment sizing, etc. Working with their drafting department, they produced a PFD (Process Flow Diagram) for the process. As problems arise and are solved, the team may revise and redraw the PFDs. The FKK process teams also works to prepare the P&IDs.The correct P&ID format is used providing a clear and concise illustration of all equipments and instruments. Finally, all the PFDs and the P&IDs are completed and need to be approved by manager. Objectives This activity requires you to identify the best process to produce the selected chemical product by performing the block flow diagrams. Upon completion the process selection, you need to produce PFD and P&ID for the selected process.

Upon completion of the task, write a technical report to manager. The report should include (but not limited to) the following a) b) c) d)

Block Flow Diagrams for the selected chemical product Process background and selection for the process Process Flow Diagram (PFD) for the process (A3 size) Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) for the process (A3 size)

Technical Report Your report can take the following format. Report Format: Cover page:  Project title  Member of group and position  Company’s name  Manager’s name Contents:  List of Contents  Acknowledgment  Abstract  Introduction  Problem statement and objectives  Block Flow Diagrams  Process Background  Process Selection  Process Flow Diagram (PFD)  Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)  Conclusion  References  Appendices  Report Assessment This activity contributes 10% of the marks weighting for this course. The distribution of marks for the activity is listed in Table.

Topic 1

Abstract, Introduction , Problem Statement and objectives

 

2

Block Flow Diagram

 

Unacceptable (1) Incomplete and very poor abstract. Does not give process background into the topic area and no grasp information on the study. Does not give a specific problem to be solved.

Information is not related to the topic Not grasp of information was included on the diagram and most of them are missing and not relevant.

  

 

Marginal (2 - 3) Abstract is too brief and not directly related to topic. Information on process background is not directly related to topic. Provides process background into the topic area but does not lay out a specific problem to be solved.

Some information is not related to the topic Not enough important information was included on the diagram and some of them are missing.

 

Acceptable (4 - 5) Abstract is related but does not take into account the overall contents of the whole report. Having some information on process background, but some points are not clearly defined. Provides process background into the topic area and puts a problem to be solved in relation to this background.

Information presented is relevant to the process selected Enough important information was included on the diagram.

  

Exceptional (6) Extensive abstract which includes brief problem statement, objectives, methodology approach and summarizes of the whole report. Process backgrounds are clearly presented with additional information including problem statement. Provides process background into the topic area. Puts a problem to solve that clearly emerges from this background and explains the significance of this problem. Sufficient background information. Structured logically and in an easy manner to follow. Clear and complete important information such as operating temperatures, pressures, conversions, and yield was included on the diagram along with flowrates and some chemical compositions.

Topic 3

Process Background

 

Unacceptable (1) No grasp of information

Information is not related to the topic

Marginal (2 - 3) Not enough information to support process selection Some information is not related to the topic

Acceptable (4 - 5) Enough information to support the process selection

 

Information presented is relevant to the process selected 

Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

 

 

Poor inspection of process selection The process presented is clearly infeasible no basis/assumptions

The drawing didn't represent the PFD The drown flowsheet didn't follow the standard format

 

Process selection made without consideration main design factors interaction The presentation is difficult to understand

The correct PFD format is used The equipment drawn are relatively sized, i.e. towers larger than drums, exchangers larger than pumps No labels on the equipment and streams

 

 

The main factors are considered A few process options are compared using a relevant basis. The presentation is partially clear (incomplete summery table is presented) The correct PFD format is used including layout and stream direction The flowsheet is cluttered some minor errors in the PFD

 

Exceptional (6) Clear and complete understanding of design goals and constraints Main points are discussed in a relevant manner supported by figures and tables Sufficient background information. Structured logically and in an easy manner to follow Consideration of major factors such as selectivity, general cost and safety issues in the process selection The screening process is clearly summarised using tables or graphs The PFD is complete including all streams (input and output), major equipment and labels The PFD is created based the process selection conclusion The PFD is labelled completely for all streams and equipment

Piping and Instrumenta tion Diagram (P&ID)

Unacceptable (1) The drawing presented is a PFD not a P&ID

  

Marginal (2 - 3) The P&ID format is used The selection of the instruments are incorrect Some instruments are not available in P&ID

   

Acceptable (4 - 5) The P&ID format is used Some instruments are not available in P&ID The labels on the P&ID are incorrect Some connection between the variables are incorrect
