CHAPTER IV DATA ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter the researcher discusses and analyzes the figurative languages and the messages conveyed through the songs of Vince Gill. There are seven songs that are going to be analyzed and discussed which are when I call your name, which bridge to go, pocket full of gold, the only love, when you come around, the rock of your love, and never knew lonely.

4.1 Analysis 4.1.1 Corpus I: When I Call Your Name When I call your name I rushed home from work like I always do I spend my whole day just thinking of you When I walked through the front door my whole life was changed Cause nobody answered when I called your name

A note on the table that told me goodbye It said you’d grown weary of living a lie Your love has ended but mine still remains But nobody answers when I call your name

Oh the lonely sound of my voice calling Is driving me insane And just like rain the tears keep falling Nobody answers when I call your name

Oh the lonely sound of my voice calling Is driving me insane And just like rain the tears keep falling Nobody answers when I call your name Oh nobody answers when I call your name

Interpretation

is a piece of paper and is impossible to speak or tell like human characteristics. It means that the composer has just been left by his love. In this line, furthermore, the composer seemingly doesn’t know when his wife left home and he gets to know about it simply

from a note that his wife has just left for him and that note informs him about a reason of her leaving on account of unbearable pain of living a lie with him. Simile 11th line

And just like rain the Here the composer used “like” which is tears keep falling

the characteristic of simile to compare between the rain and the tears. It means that he is truly in a state of profound misery after having been left by his love. So, the tears are pouring out of his eyes just as the rain continuously falling from the sky.

The Message Building up a good relationship entails a lot of courage to set up priorities in life. One of those priorities is the commitment to be together forever with our lifetime partner. However, the waves of breaking down is as strong as the commitment itself. The more we are committed, the strong the wind blow us apart. The most visible wind devastates a relationship is imbalanced time quality spent for work and family and the personality aspect which is dishonesty. These two points- imbalanced time quality and dishonesty are clearly seen or expressed in this song. Henceforth, the message from the song above is that imbalanced time quality spent for work and

family and dishonesty often become the grounds of breaking down of relationship. We, furthermore, need to be honest to our life partner just as to ourselves and stay faithful to him/her in whatever circumstances may come along the journey. 4.1.2 Corpus II: Which Bridge to Go Which Bridge to Go Oh, I've got two lovers in my life now A true love and one that's brand new I'm not really sure that I know how To love one and tell one we're through

I can't sleep at night, I toss and I turn I keep losing sight of the lessons I've learned I'm standing at the crossroads with just one concern Which bridge to cross and which bridge to burn

I knew this was wrong, I didn't listen Cause a heart only knows what feels right Oh I need to reach a decision And get on with the rest of my life

I can't sleep at night, I toss and I turn I keep losing sight of the lessons I've learned

I'm standing at the crossroads with just one concern Which bridge to cross and which bridge to burn Instrumental I can't sleep at night, I toss and I turn I keep losing sight of the lessons I've learned I'm standing at the crossroads with just one concern Which bridge to cross and which bridge to burn Lines’ quotation 2nd, 7th, 8th, lines 2nd line

Figurative Language Interpretation Symbol A true love and one Here the composer used “brand new” that’s brand new

which is a product of a particular manufacturer.

Therefore,

the

word

“brand” here represents the new lover of the composer. This new lover might just be his personal affair. It is precisely due to the fact that just like a brand of product, someone who is in affair with someone else always keeps changing from time to time. In short, this line means that the composer has two girls that he is in love with. 7th line

I am standing at the crossroads with just Here

the

composer

used

“the

crossroads” which is a place where two roads meet and cross each other. Therefore, the crossroads here means that the composer has reached to the stage of self realization where he must

bridge to burn Here the composer used “bridge” which is a structure providing a way to cross. Henceforth, the bridge here stands for his two lovers whom he is going to walk on through the journey of life. This line, therefore, means that the composer is in a state where he wants to choose one of his two lovers to live with for the rest of his life.

The Message The composer himself in this song can be said that he reaches to the point where he needs to make a right decision for the progress of his life. He realizes that having two lovers in his life would not bring such a joy into his life. Therefore, the

message conveyed from the song above is that life presents us each day with dozens of choices to opt for, henceforth; we need to be keen enough in our decision making as to what life we are going to live in and who would that someone that we would like to be with. 4.1.3 Corpus III: Pocket Full of Gold Pocket Full of Gold He slipped the ring off his finger When he walked in the room And he found him some stranger And promised her the moon How many lies you must have told You think you're a rich man With your pocket full of gold

For another man's treasure You'd say anything But is one night of pleasure Worth the trouble you'll bring Don't look so surprised 'Cause son I should know I once was a rich man

small circle of metal or other substance that we wear on our fingers. The ring, hence, symbolizes the commitment that binds both parties in love together. This line reflects the unfaithfulness of the man to his lover because he slipped the ring off which is to indicate that he breaks the promise or the commitment that he has ever made together

with his lover.

4th line

And promised her the Here the composer used “the moon” which is moon.

an object that we can see often in the sky at night and goes round the earth once every four weeks. The moon here symbolizes the beauty. This line means that the man is trying to persuade the girl with flattery words by promising or assuring her all the beautiful things and a life of bed of roses in order to get her love.

The

symbolizes the wealth. This line means that the man is a wealthy man.

in return becoming a weapon that kills himself.

20th line

stone monument over a tomb. The tombstone here represents or symbolizes the end of life or death. This line means that the composer is trying to make the man realize of what he has done by presenting to him the final call of this life which is death and reminds him that whatever his deeds are here on the surface of this globe will be remembered by other people and are counted at the end of his mortal life.

The Message In the song above, the composer describes a man who is untruthful not only to himself but also to other people. In this song the man simply pretends that he is truly a man full of gold but actually that’s not true. Consequently, the message from the song above is that being honest and being ourselves just the way we are is the ultimate truth of our lives in order to make this world we are living in more enjoyable and worthy of living.

4.1.4 Corpus IV: The Only Love The Only Love Lying here in this sleepy town Listening to the sun go down The only one who hears the sound is you You look at life so wild and free I love the way you smile at me The only love I'll ever need is you (Chorus) I need you to start a clear blue mornin' I need you at the end of a long hard day Never see you wear a frown Blues don't even come around The only love I've ever found is you We don't go much of anywhere Sunday church and county fairs The world looks good from these rocking chairs It's true Be my woman, I'll be your man We'll go through life hand in hand All I want to understand is you Repeat Chorus Never see you wear a frown Blues don't even come around The only love I've ever found is you Lines’ quotation 2 , 10th, 14th, lines 2nd line nd

which is star round that the earth moves and which gives it heat and light. Henceforth,

this “sun” symbolizes about love. Just like the sun itself that gives light to the earth, love in the same way has the capacity to lighten up the heart of human beings and makes one’s life brighter and lighter. The line “listening to the sun go down,” therefore, means that the love of the composer is beginning to dim or is about to fade away and the composer is truly in need of his love to be with him still. 13th line

and Here the composer used the word “church” which is a building for public Christians worship.

Therefore,

the

church

here

represents the spiritual life of the composer or his prayer life. The composer also used “county fairs” which is an event where there are, for example, displays of goods and animals, and amusements, games, and competitions. This phrase “county fairs,” henceforth, symbolizes recreations. From this line the researcher can say that it speaks about two important aspects of human beings

which are spiritual aspect and recreational aspect. Here the composer expresses his selfrealization as to why his love begins to dim on account of not attending to the church and/or having some recreations with his love.

14th line

The world looks good Here the composer used the word “rocking from this rocking chair chair” which is chair fitted with rockers that make it move backwards and forwards. It, therefore, symbolizes the waves of love life journey of the composer that makes it move up and down. From this line, the researcher can infer that in the midst of stormy days in a relationship, there is still a meaningful lesson to be learned from and life is still beautiful.

The message Through the song above the researcher can see how the composer describes the feelings of being in need of someone he loves. He, furthermore, describes though the love of him with the girl of his heart begins to go dim, yet he still keeps on putting much faith on her that she would be back into his embrace again. So, the message that the researcher infers from this song is that staying faithful and remaining unshaken to

the one loved in the midst of hardships that may come along the pilgrimage of this life is the key to a lasting relationship. 4.1.5 Corpus V: When You Come Around When you come around The face of an angel; pretty eyes that shine I lie awake at night wishing you were mine I’m standing here holding the biggest heartache in town Whenever you come around I get weak in the knees; and I lose my breath Oh I try to speak but the words won’t come I’m so scared to death And when you smile the world turns upside down Whenever you come around

I feel so helpless; I feel just like a kid What is it about you that makes me keep feelings hid I wish I could tell you, but the words can’t be found Whenever you come around

I get weak in the knees; and I lose my breath

Oh I try to speak but the words won’t come I’m so scared to death And when you smile the world turns upside down Whenever you come around

And when you smile that smile The whole world turns upside down Whenever you come around Whenever you come around Lines’ quotation 1st, 5th, 8th, 10th, 17th

lines 1st line

The face of an angel;

Here the composer used “an angel” that is a spiritual being that some people believe to be God’s servant in heaven and in this line angel symbolizes the girl who is very beautiful both

characteristically

and

physically.

Therefore, the composer as reflected through this line feels very much in love and truly adores the beauty of that girl.

Hyperbole

Pretty eyes that shine 1st line

Here the composer used “pretty eyes that shine”

which

is

overstatement

or

exaggeration of prettiness of the girl’s eyes beauty. Hence, this line means that the girl surely has the quality of that beauty and the composer tries to give a huge appreciation about that beauty in her.

exaggerated or overstated. It is called too exaggerated precisely due to the fact that it is impossible for him to live if his breath has gone or lost and consequently he would not be able to love the girl.

8th line

And when you smile Here the composer used “and when you the world turns upside smile the world turns upside down” which is down.

once again displaying the exaggeration or overstatement of the composer in describing the smile of the girl that he is truly admiring. It is considered to be hyperbole due to the

truth of the matter that it is an unattainable thing to occur that just a smile can make the world upside down. Therefore, this line shows that through the smile of the girl everything changes in life of the composer or that smile makes composer’s life more beautiful. 11th line

I wish I could tell you, Here the composer used “but the words can’t but the words can’t be be found” which is too overstated or found

exaggerated of what he feels towards the girl whom he is in love with. This line shows how rigid or unconfident he is whenever he wants to utter or express his profound feelings towards the girl.

comparison between two different things. And in this line the composer compares himself just as a kid. Therefore, this line means that the composer feels very much

helpless and dependent much of his life on her just like a kid who is very much dependent to his parents. Personification 14th line

Oh I try to speak but Here the composer used “but words won’t the words won’t come

come.” This phrase has given human attribute or characteristics as if the words have the capability to move or walk as human do. Therefore, this line means that the composer becomes speechless whenever he is around the girl whom he admires most in his life time.

Repetition 18th line

When you smile that Here the composer used the word “smile” smile

repeatedly to show emphasis. This line means that the composer gives heavy emphasis on the smile of the girl that somehow because of that smile makes his life more beautiful and all things just turn right.

The message From the song above the composer clearly displays his unspoken feelings to the girl that he is in love with. He simply admires her but has no courage to express his own feelings towards her. Therefore, the researcher can infer that the message from this song is to take courage when we are profoundly carried away with the strength of love power deep down in our hearts so that the one that we are in love to knows if we are truly in mad of loving her. In short, never deny and suspend the voice calling us to tell someone that we love her otherwise we will be left in regret forever. 4.1.6 Corpus VI: the Rock of Your Love The Rock of Your Love I lose myself in this place Strangest smile on my face The hand of blessing or beginner’s luck Here I stand on the rock of your love

Somethin’ steady sure feels good I always knew somehow it would I’ve traded chains for the wings of a dove Standin’ on the rock of your love Chorus

Therefore, in this line the composer is still dealing with his problems and tries to get rid of those problems and he still remains unshaken or faithful to what he believes in which the love of his lover.

The message Life presents to us many things. Some of those things are not perfectly in line with the will of us all because what life presents or gives to us is completely different from what we want. Seemingly it just goes out of our plan. That is why no wonder if too often many people experience difficulties after difficulties in their lives. The song above remains us all that despite of all the hardships we may encounter in this life journey, we need to take a little leap of faith to remain faithful to our own quality of loving and just remain on the rock of our own love and never try to have flight away from the problems or ours.

He or she would be a shoulder to lean on and strength to be cling on. It is also the same thing that the message that the composer tries to convey through the song above. Hence, the message of this song is that never take for granted for the person who loves us.

BAB V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This chapter is divided into two parts namely conclusion and suggestion. The conclusion and suggestion deal with the summary of the discussion on the chapter four. The suggestion section is pertaining to the suggestion of the researcher himself.

5.1. Conclusion Essentially figurative language is actually the work of art. There are many ways of expressing this kind work of art and one of them is through song. Vince Gill is an example of dozens of people who has excellent talent in composing songs. Those songs of him have various figurative languages on them and they have profound meaning as well. This work of art of him certainly creates bigger effect on the meaning and makes his song alive. Vince Gill’s songs consist of various figurative languages. It can be seen through the finding and discussion where the first corpus has two figurative languages which are symbol and personification. The second corpus has one figurative language which is symbol. The third corpus has one figurative language which is also symbol. The fourth corpus has one figurative language which is symbol. The fifth corpus has five figurative languages which are symbol, hyperbole, simile, personification, and repetition. The sixth corpus has one figurative language which is

symbol. And the seventh corpus has three figurative languages which are symbol, hyperbole, and synecdoche.

5.2 Suggestion There are many means of getting our knowledge wider and make this life of our

more

meaningful.

Through

analyzing

the

figurative

languages

and

comprehending the messages found in songs lyrics is one option that we can choose from. It is precisely due to the fact that song lyrics have contained many lessons to be learned for all people from all generations. Having studied the figurative language on Vince Gill’s songs, therefore, the researcher would like to suggest to all the readers specifically to the students to see songs as a medium of learning. Therefore, it would be best if the students or the readers to take songs not simply for the pleasure of singing but also must be able to go beyond it that is to be able to get the meaning from songs. Since most of the song lyrics are made out of personal experiences of the composer, hence, the readers must take advantage of life sharing value of the composer expressed on his song lyrics.
