SUCCESS STORY FOR SETTLEMENT GRANTS PROGRAM (SGP) JULY 2008 - MARCH 2009 Since the Cambodian Association of Victoria (CAV) commenced work on the Settlement Grants Program (SOP) things have been very busy indeed, The program aims to work with and support people who have migrated to Australia recently, within the last five years. This program involves the CAV working with many newly arrived Cambodian people, in Springvale and surrounding areas, to help them with settling into their new lives in Australia. This work is done in many ways, working with new migrants to orientate them to Australia byproviding information, advice and referral services. Integration into a new country and new community is also a focus of the Program. The CAV works to provide its members with education sessions, sporting and social group activities to support new migrants to be included and to participate' in the local and wider communities. By forging new and lasting friendships within the Cambodian community new migrants are able to nurture their cultural heritage while embracing the new and exciting aspects of their lives in Australia. A large number of eligible people have been registered with the CAV to receive assistance via the Settlement Grants Program. Last year the CAV went through the process of applying for the Settlement Grants Program for the first time. It was estimated that in a 12 month period approximately 80 newly migrated people would receive assistance from the CAV via the SGP. This number was greatly underestimated, with 80 eligible people already coming through the CAV doors for assistance in the first 3 months of the program commencing!

Taking a group picture while visiting Seal Rock (February 2009)

This large number of people visiting the CAV office regularly has lead to a very busy start to the Program. Staff have worked very closely with the CAV/ SGP clients. Much time has been spent with these clients working through a variety of Settlement issues and concerns. Clients have contacted the CAV by phone or visited the office in person to seek help and support. Staff have supported clients with a variety of Migration Related The monk is giving a speech on family harmony, anti understanding how to manage inter-generational conflict Client Services and Document Help, among a large variety prior taking boat to visit French Island (Feh 2009) of other issues.

04/2009

One of the most common areas where SGP clients rme sought CAV support and assistance is in the area of Domestic Violence. This issue is of growing concern within the Community, \sith many clients coming forward to seek help, information and support in recent months. The CAV stall have worked closely with clients in this area and given them somewhere to turn for help. Staff has provided valuable listening and support in a safe environment. They have also provided important information, such as information about the laws in Australia, and advice on what action can he taken to improve or resolve a difficult situation.

Information Session on Domestic Violence, Immigration and Law (December 2008)

The CAV provides many, many people with much support and assistance every day. With the SGP. the numbers of clients coming through the door for support with the Program are recorded lor statistical purposes. While it is only the number of SGP clients that are recorded, it starts to give a better idea of just how much important work the CAV does every day. The number of CAV clients both in general and on the Program is increasing all the time, and will lead to an even busier year in 2009. Below are the statistics of clients who received services from CAV within the period of 01 July 2008 23 March 2009: 178 Clients received services from CAV • The services included immigration related client services, financial support, document help. police or court, citizenship, driving, family violence, passport, centre facilities, education and training, employment, family and relationship, home tutoring, household management, legal and transportation. • Among them, there have been 121 being referred to other service providers such as: DIAC. DIMA, Centrelink/Family Assistance Office, self referral, lawyer or legal assistance provider, police (state or territory)- Australian Post. Births. Deaths and Marriages. Women's Refuge. Accommodation Provider. AMEP Provider. Counseling Service, Financial Institution, Housing (community). Job network provider/employment agency. Road and or Traffic Authority and school (Primary or High School). The project can be implemented effectively and with the highest quality, because of your excellent supports and strong working cooperation. We would like to sincerely thank to our donors (DIM I A) who have always provided this fund to support our SGP program that enables us to provide the services to meet the needs and demands of our target beneficiaries. Cambodian Association of Victoria Youth Group The Cambodian Association of Victoria Youth Group was established in early 1989 and is still regularly engaging in our community through our events, activitie and programs. We currently have 159 regular members of which 20 are on the organising committee.

The committee met in December to plan the upcoming

CAV Youth Group Social BBQ

year. We decided that we will direct more energy towards contributing to our community and towards community development projects. We plan to hold more events and activities which engage young people. Our proposed ideas includes FREE tutoring sessions, camps, more recreational and social events, Cambodian cinema nights, charity functions, opportunities for local talent to perform, diversity events, culture, indigenous awareness and involvement in the greater community. •

VOLUNTEER IMPRESSION TO CAV Volunteer Profile - Annie Boulton Hi, my name is Annie Boulton. I am 30 years old. I live in Brunswick, which is north of Melbourne, a far way from Springvale! I have a dog that I love very much, although he is very naught}'! I work as a nurse in the community, driving all around inner Melbourne. I work with people with HIV/AIDS, I visit them at their homes, to help and support them with their general health and coping. I am very lucky that I love my job very much! Last year, in August, I went to Cambodia for the first time. I had never met any Cambodian people before and I did not know much about Cambodia, except about the terrible 'killing fields'. I found Cambodia to be the most beautiful and interesting country and the people to be so kind and friendly and cheerful, despite their poor and difficult living conditions. I loved driving through the country side, seeing the style of houses built up high off the ground! I was very lucky to travel to Angkor Watt to see the magical temples and places from another time and place in history. When I came back home to Melbourne, I decided that I wanted to meet more Cambodian people and help them in some way if I could. I looked into the Cambodian community living in Melbourne, and I found out about the CAV. I started coming to the CAV in about November, once a week for a couple of hours, to volunteer and help out where I could. In this time I have met many new people and have helped with many different things, such as helping with an application for a government grant, to hopefully get some more money for CAV to be able to help its members! I have really enjoyed coming to the CAV so far, and I look forwau) to continuing my visits to the CAV and helping out some more in the future! Thanks for having me!

On the date of 14 February 2009, from 11:OOAM - 13:30PM the CAV, under the leadership and coordination of Cr. CHEA Youhorn, conducted a fundraiser in order to support the bushfire victims and in particular to share our deepest condolences with the victims and bereaved families who lost so much in the terrible Victorian bushfires. During this event about 300 participants attended. Those who participated included representatives from The City of Greater Dandenong and honorable guests from both the International and the Cambodian Community. The event was very successful and collected over 11,000.00$. Contributions were made from the KhmerAustralian Community and from honorable guests within Melbourne. The money has already been forwarded to the Australian Red Cross for the direct benefit of the bushfire victims. The program for the day included speeches from Cr. CHEA Youhorn, CAV President, Cr. Roz Blades, the Major's representative, Dr. Luigi Soccio from Department of Immigration and Citizenship and Mr. John Bennie, Chief Executive Officer of City of Greater Dandenong. Followed by the preaching sermons were from the Buddhist monks and then we all shared lunch together. On behalf of the CAV, and on behalf of the bushfire victims, we would like to give our sincere thanks to all those who have shared, participated and contributed to this important event. Would you please see the attached list of contributors.
