A. Manufacturing Sector Performance versus Other Sector As can be seen from the table below, the value added generated by the manufacturing sector is the second highest after trade and the annual capital formation of the manufacturing is the highest among all sectors, indicating a high capital intensity of manufacturing industry on one side, and the high rate of investment flow on the other side. Manufacturing is a long term investment with relatively higher initial fixed assets.

SITUATION ANALYSIS

This is an old pioneer industry in Dubai as in many other countries. Some of the manufacturing units date back to the sixties and most of the industries started in the seventies and eighties. It is relatively capital intensive industry with capital per unit reaching up to 45 Mil AED. It is also relatively labour intensive with employee numbers ranging from 45 to 300 persons. The industries in this sector are well distributed over entire Dubai; however most of the factories are located in Al Garhoud and Umm Ramool presumably because it is a cleaner type of industry targeting consumers in commercial and manufacturing areas in central Dubai. Only one industry is located in JAFZA, registered as a branch of Foreign LLC .Other units are either LLC ore Sole Proprietorship, a legal status that characterizes most Dubai industries. The plot areas are considerably large ranging from 2800m2 to 80000m2.The large area is required because of the long production line and bulky raw material which is normally an attribute of this kind of industry

LOCAL MARKET DEMAND

Dubai Imports and Exports Net imports by Dubai was 72.2 Mil AED in 2005, exports were 47.7 Mil AED representing 66% of net imports. This an indicator that cartons industry is an important industry in Dubai and is competing well in the international market

UAE Imports and Exports UAE imports value in 2004 was 25 Mil US$(92 Mil AED) growing at 15% p.a during 2000-2004, while exports in 2004 was about 25 Mil US$ also. This confirms the importance of the industry at the level of UAE as a whole. It also shows that there is scope for more carton industries. We also note that Dubai imports represent a high ratio of UAE imports amounting to about 78%, while exports from Dubai represent 52% of UAE exports. It can be concluded that most of the consumption of this product is concentrated in Dubai and that Dubai also has a good share of this industry. The number of factories listed in the appendix does support this last hypothesis

EXPORTS PERFORMANCE BY PRODUCT

As can be seen from the table below, United Kingdom, Uganda and Jordan are dynamic markets. They exhibited annual growth in imports of 12%,23% and 31% p.a., respectively during 2000-2004.UAE took advantage of these markets, since its exports had actually grown at much higher rates of 113%,51% and 110% p.a. during the same period. Kenya market, on the other hand, did not exhibit dynamism, yet UAE exports were performing very well. This suggests that Kenya market is not a future strategic market for UAE. Germany and Azerbaijan are also good growing markets, but UAE exports to them was poor at negative growth rates. Contrary to Kenya situation, Germany and Azerbaijan may provide potential stable markets for UAE exports in future

Carton and Boxes industry ‫ﺻﻨﺎﻋﺔ ﺻﻨﺎدﻳﻖ وﻋﻠﺐ اﻟﻜﺮﺗﻮن‬

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

The corrugated boxes industry is one of the pioneering industries in Dubai. Most of the factories are located in Al Garhoud and Umm Ramool. It is relatively capital and also labour intensive with the standard of UAE industry. The average capital per unit is around 45 Mil AED, and average employment per unit is about 150 persons. Dubai exports represent 66% of net imports, while UAE exports are equivalent in value to its imports. This indicates that the industry is competitive in the export market. Dubai imports represent about 78% of UAE imports, indicating that most of the industries or commercial entities using cartons are located in Dubai. UK, Uganda and Jordan markets had been growing well at the same time UAE exports to these marketing were performing at higher rates. So UAE exports to these markets need only be sustained. Germany and Azerbaijan markets had been growing also but UAE exports to these markets exhibited negative growth. Hence more aggressive marketing is required in these markets to fully utilize the potential growth. USA, France, Germany and Belgium: These markets' imports had been growing at about or higher than world imports and their world market shares were between 4-11% Also Korea and Belarus imports had been growing at about 28% p.a, during the last five years. The major players in Korea market were Germany and China supplying at 3000US$ per ton. In Belarus market, the main players were Russian Federation and Lithuania supplying at 100-100 US$ per ton
