Shakespeare is a world renowned play writer who has written a total of 37 plays, including The Merchant of Venice. Fars: In Merchant of Venice, Bassanio, a young Venetian approaches his friend Antonio for 3000 ducats. But he is ash-poor as his ships and merchandise are busy at sea. Bassanio turn to the Jewish moneylender Shylock and names Antonio as the loans guarantor. Shylock proposes a condition for the loan: if Antonio is unable to repay it at the specified date, shylock may take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Caro: At Venice Antonio’s ship are reported lost at sea. This leaves him unable to satisfy the bond. Shylock has Antonio arrested and brought before the court. We had presented a short play a scene from the Merchant of Venice in our class. It was well appreciated and we felt the play was a perfect example of how being merciful is an important ethic in all our lives. Fars: So, here we have the play, the court scene.
