Notes on Battery Usage When you use the battery, carefully read and strictly observe the Safety Instructions and the notes described below: Use only the specified battery (3.7V). Avoid extremely cold environments as low temperatures can shorten the battery life and reduce camera performance. When you are using a new rechargeable battery or a rechargeable battery that has not been used for an extended period of time (the battery that passed the expiry date is an exception), it may affect the number of images that can be captured. Therefore, to maximize its performance and lifetime, we recommend that you fully charge the battery and discharge it for at least one complete cycle before use. GETTING STARTED Preparation 1. Adjust the grip belt. Release the Velcro tape on the grip belt and adjust the belt length. After adjusting the length, refasten the Velcro tape firmly. 2. Open the battery cover. 3. Insert the supplied battery with correct orientation as shown. Close the battery cover and make sure it is locked securely. 4. Insert an SD/SDHC memory card (Optional). The digital video camera does not have built-in memory and cannot operate without an SD/SDHC memory card inserted. Make sure to insert an SD/SDHC memory card before use. Be sure to format the SD/SDHC memory card with this video camera before its initial usage.
To prevent valuable data from being accidentally deleted from an SD/SDHC memory card, you can slide the write protect tab (on the side of the SD/SDHC memory card) to “LOCK”. To save, edit, or delete data on an SD/SDHC memory card, you must unlock the card. To prevent damaging of SD/SDHC memory card, be sure to turn off the power when inserting or removing the SD/SDHC memory card. If inserting or removing the SD/SDHC memory card with the power on, the digital video camera will automatically turn off. Be careful not to drop the battery when opening or closing the battery cover.

Turning the Power On/Off Load the battery and insert an SD/SDHC memory card before starting. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera turns on. To turn the power off, slide the power switch again.
The power is turned off automatically when the digital video camera has not been operated for a defined period of time. To resume operation, turn the power on again. Refer to section in this manual titled “Auto Off” in the setup menu for further details.
Charging the Battery The battery charging can be done with the digital video camera body. 1. Load the battery into the digital video camera. 2. Plug the AC adapter into the DC input terminal of the digital video camera. 3. Plug the other end of the AC adapter to a power outlet. The CHARGE LED lights green during charging and turns off when charging is completed.
When the battery is charged with the video camera, the video camera power must be turned off.

Handling the Digital Video Camera 1. Open the panel by pushing the LCD latch and then pulling the panel away from the digital video camera. 2. Choose the angle of the monitor that suits you best by rotating the panel.

Rotate the LCD panel carefully with the correct direction. Over rotation or rotating to the wrong direction may damage the hinge that connects the LCD monitor to the digital video camera. Avoid touching the LCD monitor when moving the LCD panel.

Setting the Date and Time The date/time needs to be set if/when: The digital video camera is turned on for the first time. The digital video camera is turned on after being left without battery for an extended period of time. 1. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera turns on. 2. Press the MENU button. 3. Move the OK button to f to enter [Setup] menu. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Date/ Time], and press the OK button. Formatting the Memory Card This utility formats the SD/SDHC memory card and deletes all stored images, video clips, and data. 1. Press the MENU button. 2. Move the OK button to f to enter [Setup] menu. 3. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Format], and press the OK button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Yes], and press the OK button. To cancel formatting, select [No] and press the OK button.

RECORDING MODE Your digital video camera is equipped with a 3.0" full color LTPS LCD monitor to help you capture/playback images and video clips or adjust menu settings.
Recording Video Clips 1. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera turns on. The default mode is recording mode. The / LED lights green. 2. Compose the image on the LCD monitor. 3. Press the REC button to start recording. 4. To stop recording, press the REC button again. The recording time depends on the storage media size and the subject to be recorded.
Capturing Still Images 1. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera 1 Press down halfway turns on. The default mode is recording mode. 2 Press down fully 2. Pressing the button down halfway automatically focuses and adjusts the exposure, and pressing the button down fully captures the images. If the write speed of your SD/SDHC memory card is not fast enough for recording video clips in the currently selected size, the recording will stop. In this case, select a video size or quality lower than the current one. When using SDHC memory card to record high resolution video clips, higher than Class 4 is recommended to prevent recording from discontinuing. In recording mode, since the available video recording time and number of shots are measured separately, "CARD FULL" will only be displayed when the available memory is insufficient for both video recording and still image capturing. If the memory is sufficient for one and insufficient for the other, no message will be displayed but the REC or button will be disabled.

Using the Zoom Function This digital video camera is equipped with 4x digital zoom. You may enlarge the subject by moving the zoom lever towards T. While digital zoom can be a useful feature, the more an image is enlarged (zoomed), the more pixelated (grainier) the image will appear. To capture a zoomed image/video clip, perform the following steps: 1. Compose the image on the LCD monitor. Move the zoom lever towards T to zoom in on the subject and enlarge the subject on the LCD monitor. Move the zoom lever towards W to view a wider angle of the image. The status of digital magnification is displayed on the zoom status bar. 2. Press the or REC button to capture the image or video clip.
To activate digital zoom function, set [Digi. Zoom] to [On] in the recording menu. The zoom function can be used as you record video clips.
Using the Assist Light When capturing still images/video clips in dark places, you can turn on the LED assist light in front of the digital video camera to help brightening and focusing on the subject. 1. In recording mode, press the assist light on or off.

The assist light can only be activated in recording mode. When the digital video camera is switched to playback, audio or USB mode, the assist light will turn off automatically.

Setting the Focus Images/Video clips can be recorded with the focus determined automatically using auto focus. You may also specify [ ] macro or [Q] infinity mode. 1. In recording mode, move the OK button to c (FOCUS) as shown. Focus setting screen will be displayed. 2. Move the OK button to c / d to select the desired focus setting, and press the OK button.

Setting Manual White Balance You can manually set and store the white balance when the menu options do not offer a good match. 1. In recording mode, press the MENU button. 2. Move the OK button to c / d to select [W. Balance], and press the OK button. 3. Select [Manual], and press the OK button. 4. Select [New WB], and press the OK button. To use the previously set white balance data, select [Use Data], and press the OK button. 5. Point the video camera at a white paper or white slate, and press the button. When the manual white balance is stored, [COMPLETE] will be displayed and the video camera returns to recording mode.

Setting the Scene Mode By simply selecting one of the following 9 modes, you can capture still images/video clips with most appropriate settings. 1. In recording mode, move the OK button to d (SCN) as shown. Scene setting screen will be displayed. 2. Move the OK button to c / d to select the desired scene setting, and press the OK button.

Exposure Compensation/Backlight Correction Images can be captured with the overall scene intentionally made brighter or darker. These settings are used when a suitable brightness (exposure) cannot be obtained in circumstances where the difference in brightness between the subject and the background (the contrast) is large, or when the subject that you wish to capture is very small within the scene. Exposure can be set in 1/3 EV units.

AUDIO MODE Recording Audio Files The digital video camera enables you to record and playback audio files anytime and anywhere. 1. Press the MODE button to switch to audio mode. During video playback, press the OK button to pause playback. Moving the OK button to c can switch the displayed information On/Off.
Playing Back Audio Files 1. In playback mode, select the desired audio file. 2. Press the OK button to start audio playback. 3. Move the OK button to d to stop audio playback. Playing Back Still Images/Video Clips on TV You can also playback your images on a TV screen. Before connecting to any devices, make sure to select NTSC / PAL system to match the video output system of the video equipment you are going to connect to the digital video camera, then turn all connected devices off. 1. Connect one end of the AV cable to the A/V OUT terminal of the digital video camera. 2. Connect the other end to the AV input socket of the TV set. 3. Turn the TV and digital video camera on. 4. Playback the still images/video clips. 5. The method of operation is the same as playing back still images and video clips on the digital video camera.
Connecting the Digital Video Camera to HDTV HD TV (High Definition Television) is a digital television broadcasting system with better resolution than traditional television systems. It can perform HD (720P) high resolution quality.

1. Connect one end of the YPbPr (HD out) cable into the (Video IN) port on the HDTV and the other end into the COMPONENT (HD out) terminal of the digital video camera. 2. Connect one end of the AV cable into the (Audio IN) socket of the HDTV and the other end into the (A/V OUT) terminal of the digital video camera. (Do not connect the yellow connector to HDTV’s AV-IN.) 3. Turn the TV and digital video camera on. The video camera will auto detect and set the settings when the cables are connected.

Thumbnail Display This function allows you to view thumbnail images on the LCD monitor so you may search for a particular image/video clip/audio file. 1. Slide Show Display The slide show function enables you to play back your still images automatically in sequential order as a slide show. This is a very useful and entertaining feature for reviewing captured images and for presentations. 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Press the MENU button. 3. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Slide Show], and press the OK button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select the desired interval time, and press the OK button. The slide show starts. To stop the slide show display, press the OK button. Pressing the REC or button during slide show display will switch to recording mode.
Video clips display the first frame image and the video clip is not played back. Audio files are not displayed in slide show.

Protecting Images/Video Clips/Audio Files Set the data to read-only to prevent files from being deleted by mistake.

To cancel all protection, perform the above steps and select [Unlock] in step 2. To cancel protection for one specific file, perform above step 1 to 5.
The protect icon is displayed with protected files. Formatting an SD/SDHC memory card overrides protection, and deletes all files regardless of their protected status.

Deleting Images/Video Clips/Audio Files 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Move the OK button to e / f to select the file you want to delete. 3. Press the MENU button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Delete File], and press the OK button. If the selected file is protected, [Delete File] menu cannot be entered. 5. Select [Yes] and press the OK button. The selected file is deleted. To delete all the stored files, select [Delete All] in step 4. All files will be deleted except the protected ones. To cancel deletion, select [No] in step 5.

DPOF Settings DPOF is the abbreviation for Digital Print Order Format, which allows you to embed printing information on your memory card. You can select the images to be printed and how many prints to make with the DPOF menu in the camera and insert the memory card to the card compatible printer. When the printer starts printing, it will read the embedded information on the memory card and print the specified images. 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Move the OK button to e / f to select the image you want to set DPOF. 3. Press the MENU button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [DPOF], and press the OK button. 5. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Single] or [All] and press the OK button. [Single]: Sets DPOF for each individual image. [All]: Sets DPOF for all images. 6. Select [Print Num.], and press the OK button. 7. Move the OK button to c / d to set the number of prints and press the OK button. You can set up to 99 prints for each image. 8. Select [Date Print], and press the OK button. 9. Select [On] or [Off], and press the OK button. [On]: The date of the image will also be printed. [Off]: The date of the image will not be printed. 10. Select [Print], and press the OK button. 11. Select [Execute], and press the OK button. This creates a file containing the DPOF information, and when the operation is finished, the screen returns to the playback mode. Downloading/Deleting Your Files via Computer 1. Slide the power switch until the video camera turns on. 2. Connect one end of the USB cable to the USB terminal of the digital video camera. 3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer. 4. From the Windows desktop, double click on “My Computer”. 5. Look for a new “removable disk” icon. This “removable disk” is actually the memory (or memory card) in your video camera. Typically, the video camera will be assigned drive letter “E” or higher. 6. Double click on the removable disk and locate the DCIM folder. 7. Double click on the DCIM folder to open it to find more folders. Your recorded images, video clips, and audio files will be inside these folders. 8. Copy and paste or drag and drop files to a folder on your computer. 9. To delete files, simply select the unwanted files and delete. Mac users: Double-click the “untitled” or “unlabeled” disk drive icon on your desktop. iPhoto may automatically launch.
When using high capacity memory cards to record video clips continuously, split files might be created on storage media. However, it does not influence the playback on the digital video camera.

GETTING STARTED Preparation 1. Adjust the grip belt. Release the Velcro tape on the grip belt and adjust the belt length. After adjusting the length, refasten the Velcro tape firmly. 2. Open the battery cover. 3. Insert the supplied battery with correct orientation as shown. Close the battery cover and make sure it is locked securely. 4. Insert an SD/SDHC memory card (Optional). The digital video camera does not have built-in memory and cannot operate without an SD/SDHC memory card inserted. Make sure to insert an SD/SDHC memory card before use. Be sure to format the SD/SDHC memory card with this video camera before its initial usage.
To prevent valuable data from being accidentally deleted from an SD/SDHC memory card, you can slide the write protect tab (on the side of the SD/SDHC memory card) to “LOCK”. To save, edit, or delete data on an SD/SDHC memory card, you must unlock the card. To prevent damaging of SD/SDHC memory card, be sure to turn off the power when inserting or removing the SD/SDHC memory card. If inserting or removing the SD/SDHC memory card with the power on, the digital video camera will automatically turn off. Be careful not to drop the battery when opening or closing the battery cover.

Turning the Power On/Off Load the battery and insert an SD/SDHC memory card before starting. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera turns on. To turn the power off, slide the power switch again.
The power is turned off automatically when the digital video camera has not been operated for a defined period of time. To resume operation, turn the power on again. Refer to section in this manual titled “Auto Off” in the setup menu for further details.
Charging the Battery The battery charging can be done with the digital video camera body. 1. Load the battery into the digital video camera. 2. Plug the AC adapter into the DC input terminal of the digital video camera. 3. Plug the other end of the AC adapter to a power outlet. The CHARGE LED lights green during charging and turns off when charging is completed.
When the battery is charged with the video camera, the video camera power must be turned off.

Handling the Digital Video Camera 1. Open the panel by pushing the LCD latch and then pulling the panel away from the digital video camera. 2. Choose the angle of the monitor that suits you best by rotating the panel.

RECORDING MODE Your digital video camera is equipped with a 3.0" full color LTPS LCD monitor to help you capture/playback images and video clips or adjust menu settings.
Recording Video Clips 1. Slide the power switch until the digital video camera turns on. The default mode is recording mode. The / LED lights green. 2. Compose the image on the LCD monitor. 3. Press the REC button to start recording. 4. To stop recording, press the REC button again. The recording time depends on the storage media size and the subject to be recorded.

Pressing the button down halfway automatically focuses and adjusts the exposure, and pressing the button down fully captures the images. If the write speed of your SD/SDHC memory card is not fast enough for recording video clips in the currently selected size, the recording will stop. In this case, select a video size or quality lower than the current one. When using SDHC memory card to record high resolution video clips, higher than Class 4 is recommended to prevent recording from discontinuing. In recording mode, since the available video recording time and number of shots are measured separately, "CARD FULL" will only be displayed when the available memory is insufficient for both video recording and still image capturing. If the memory is sufficient for one and insufficient for the other, no message will be displayed but the REC or button will be disabled.

Using the Zoom Function This digital video camera is equipped with 4x digital zoom. You may enlarge the subject by moving the zoom lever towards T. While digital zoom can be a useful feature, the more an image is enlarged (zoomed), the more pixelated (grainier) the image will appear. To capture a zoomed image/video clip, perform the following steps: 1. Compose the image on the LCD monitor. Move the zoom lever towards T to zoom in on the subject and enlarge the subject on the LCD monitor. Move the zoom lever towards W to view a wider angle of the image. The status of digital magnification is displayed on the zoom status bar. 2. Press the or REC button to capture the image or video clip.
To activate digital zoom function, set [Digi. Zoom] to [On] in the recording menu. The zoom function can be used as you record video clips.
Using the Assist Light When capturing still images/video clips in dark places, you can turn on the LED assist light in front of the digital video camera to help brightening and focusing on the subject. 1. In recording mode, press the assist light on or off.

The assist light can only be activated in recording mode. When the digital video camera is switched to playback, audio or USB mode, the assist light will turn off automatically.

Setting the Focus Images/Video clips can be recorded with the focus determined automatically using auto focus. You may also specify [ ] macro or [Q] infinity mode. 1. Setting Manual White Balance You can manually set and store the white balance when the menu options do not offer a good match. 1. In recording mode, press the MENU button. 2. Move the OK button to c / d to select [W. Balance], and press the OK button. 3. Select [Manual], and press the OK button. 4. Select [New WB], and press the OK button. To use the previously set white balance data, select [Use Data], and press the OK button. 5. Point the video camera at a white paper or white slate, and press the button. Exposure Compensation/Backlight Correction Images can be captured with the overall scene intentionally made brighter or darker. These settings are used when a suitable brightness (exposure) cannot be obtained in circumstances where the difference in brightness between the subject and the background (the contrast) is large, or when the subject that you wish to capture is very small within the scene. Exposure can be set in 1/3 EV units.

Playing Back Still Images/Video Clips on TV You can also playback your images on a TV screen. Before connecting to any devices, make sure to select NTSC / PAL system to match the video output system of the video equipment you are going to connect to the digital video camera, then turn all connected devices off. 1. Connect one end of the AV cable to the A/V OUT terminal of the digital video camera. 2. Connect the other end to the AV input socket of the TV set. 3. Turn the TV and digital video camera on. 4. Playback the still images/video clips. 5. The method of operation is the same as playing back still images and video clips on the digital video camera.
Connecting the Digital Video Camera to HDTV HD TV (High Definition Television) is a digital television broadcasting system with better resolution than traditional television systems. It can perform HD (720P) high resolution quality.

(Do not connect the yellow connector to HDTV’s AV-IN.) 3. Turn the TV and digital video camera on. The video camera will auto detect and set the settings when the cables are connected.

Thumbnail Display This function allows you to view thumbnail images on the LCD monitor so you may search for a particular image/video clip/audio file. 1. Slide Show Display The slide show function enables you to play back your still images automatically in sequential order as a slide show. This is a very useful and entertaining feature for reviewing captured images and for presentations. 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Press the MENU button. 3. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Slide Show], and press the OK button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select the desired interval time, and press the OK button. The slide show starts. To stop the slide show display, press the OK button. Pressing the REC or button during slide show display will switch to recording mode.
Video clips display the first frame image and the video clip is not played back. Audio files are not displayed in slide show.

Protecting Images/Video Clips/Audio Files Set the data to read-only to prevent files from being deleted by mistake.
Protecting One File 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Move the OK button to e / f to select the file you want to protect. 3. Press the MENU button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Protect], and press the OK button. 5. Select [Single] and press the OK button. The selected file is protected. To cancel protection, perform step 1 to 5 again.

Protecting All Files 1. Select [All] from the Protect menu and press the OK button. 2. Select [Lock] and press the OK button. All stored files are protected. To cancel all protection, perform the above steps and select [Unlock] in step 2. To cancel protection for one specific file, perform above step 1 to 5.
The protect icon is displayed with protected files. Formatting an SD/SDHC memory card overrides protection, and deletes all files regardless of their protected status.

Deleting Images/Video Clips/Audio Files 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Move the OK button to e / f to select the file you want to delete. 3. Press the MENU button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Delete File], and press the OK button. If the selected file is protected, [Delete File] menu cannot be entered. 5. Select [Yes] and press the OK button. The selected file is deleted. To delete all the stored files, select [Delete All] in step 4. All files will be deleted except the protected ones. To cancel deletion, select [No] in step 5.

DPOF Settings DPOF is the abbreviation for Digital Print Order Format, which allows you to embed printing information on your memory card. You can select the images to be printed and how many prints to make with the DPOF menu in the camera and insert the memory card to the card compatible printer. When the printer starts printing, it will read the embedded information on the memory card and print the specified images. 1. Press the MODE button to switch to playback mode. 2. Move the OK button to e / f to select the image you want to set DPOF. 3. Press the MENU button. 4. Move the OK button to c / d to select [DPOF], and press the OK button. 5. Move the OK button to c / d to select [Single] or [All] and press the OK button. [Single]: Sets DPOF for each individual image. [All]: Sets DPOF for all images. 6. Select [Print Num.], and press the OK button. 7. Move the OK button to c / d to set the number of prints and press the OK button. You can set up to 99 prints for each image. 8. Select [Date Print], and press the OK button. 9. Select [On] or [Off], and press the OK button. [On]: The date of the image will also be printed. [Off]: The date of the image will not be printed. 10. Select [Print], and press the OK button. 11. Select [Execute], and press the OK button. This creates a file containing the DPOF information, and when the operation is finished, the screen returns to the playback mode. The DPOF icon [ ] is displayed on each image that has set up DPOF settings.

Downloading/Deleting Your Files via Computer 1. Slide the power switch until the video camera turns on. 2. Connect one end of the USB cable to the USB terminal of the digital video camera. 3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer. 4. From the Windows desktop, double click on “My Computer”. 5. Look for a new “removable disk” icon. This “removable disk” is actually the memory (or memory card) in your video camera. Typically, the video camera will be assigned drive letter “E” or higher. 6. Double click on the removable disk and locate the DCIM folder. 7. Double click on the DCIM folder to open it to find more folders. Your recorded images, video clips, and audio files will be inside these folders. 8. Copy and paste or drag and drop files to a folder on your computer. 9. To delete files, simply select the unwanted files and delete. Mac users: Double-click the “untitled” or “unlabeled” disk drive icon on your desktop. iPhoto may automatically launch.
When using high capacity memory cards to record video clips continuously, split files might be created on storage media. However, it does not influence the playback on the digital video camera.
